After a fall and winter of football and basketball, Florida State League baseball is back for a second season with the Cincinnati Reds minor-league affiliate at the charming, historic ball field in downtown Daytona Beach. And Congregation B nai Torah is getting an early start, heading out to the ballpark for a Men s Club sponsored evening of baseball and camaraderie on Saturday April 9th, game time 7:05 pm. This is our third year. It s not a fundraiser, said Chuck Weisman of the Men s Club. It s a social event aimed at bringing the Jewish community together for some fun. He said that last year about 150 people of all ages attended from throughout Volusia and Flagler Counties for a game that took place later in the season. $ 5.00 each It was too hot for some people who couldn t sit long (in the bleachers), Weisman said. So we re trying to make it more comfortable for everyone by doing it now (early April). We hope to draw even more people. Tickets are $5 each and can be reserved by calling the Temple office at For an additional $5, a voucher for a hot dog or pizza, chips and soft drink can be bought. 3 Page 3 President s Message by Saralee Morrissey Dear Fellow Congregants: As I look back on this year as President of CBT, I am reminded of the many and varied life cycle events that we share as the Bnai Torah family. The summer of awesome went quickly and we culminated it with an awesome surprise party for Rabbi s birthday. Rabbi s health was a reminder of the importance of taking care of oneself and to be available to others during their time of need and healing. We are grateful that Rabbi Merrill Shapiro was available for our services and needs during Rabbi Kane s absence and thankfully the outcome of Rabbi Kane s surgery was positive and his outlook is excellent. Ken Haberman and Jesse Acosta made us proud as they became a Bar Mitzvah, showing us all that it s never too late to learn or to find spiritual fulfillment. Anastasia Chuven and Asher Ravede continued to participate in services showing us that they are capably preparing to enter Jewish adulthood. The passing of our dear friends and congregants, Bonnie Lasky, Edith Plotkin, Nancy Kisseloff and Ed Fulop, reminded us of our own vulnerabilities and that life s celebrations are also filled with sadness. Seeing the many babies and toddlers at Tot Shabbat and Purim made the cycle of life complete. The Bnai Torah family pulled together regardless of whether the life cycle event was happy, sad, worrisome or tragic to ensure that we operate as a synagogue during all celebrations of life. And to remind each of us that the Bnai Torah family is here for you. Safe travels to all of our snowbirds heading North. We look forward to your return. Monuments Men April 17 at 2 pm We shall institute our second season in September. We have rotated history lectures by notable professors on DVD; movies; and book reviews. Each offering has an entertainment quotient and a learning quotient. The entertainment index draws the largest audience but the learning quotient is important for a subset of participants. We try to balance both. I ve enjoyed visiting with you in the Torah Times and weekly s. Next season, we are planning at least 2 book reviews; 2 movies; and 2 lectures given by DVD. Hope to see you at some of these events! These programs complement but are not meant to substitute for the Rabbi s offering or other programs. Sincerely, Beverly and Marvin Lewis

6 Page 6 Torah Times Sisterhood News by Barbara Goldstein and Sandy Zimbler Well, Sandy and I have been told it s time for another article to be written for our Torah Times. So, here we go again. To start, we want to wish everyone a Sessa Pesach and invite you to join us at our Seder dinner (see the flyer on page 10 for more information) on Friday, April 22nd. Our last meeting was a delicious luncheon at D.B. Pickles. It seems that we Jewish women go along with the saying give us a meeting where we can eat and we ll attend!. We had a couple of new faces and, if we continue meeting at various restaurants, we hope to see many more new faces. We d like some input from you when would you prefer we have our meetings weekdays as a luncheon or dinner (where husbands are more than welcome) Sunday afternoons (where some of our working mothers could attend). In fact, if a Sunday afternoon meeting is called for and we have a few toddlers, we ll look into getting a babysitter for the time of the meeting. Also, please let us know what type of programs you would like do you want us to have speakers or do you just want a social meeting? We want to make the Congregation B nai Torah Sisterhood the best that it could be BUT to do that we need your input. Sisterhood is finishing up its 18th year we re ready to graduate and go into college. Our 18 years have been very productive growing years for us. We worked very hard (and still do ) to make us the family oriented congregation that we are. Sisterhood is the backbone of CBT we do whatever needs to be done to keep us as we are for example if you can help out with the Seder give Lea Moskowitz [ ] a call and tell her you d like to be a Kitchen Angel. We are the major fundraising arm of the temple our annual Journal is supported by many of our local Volusia/Flagler merchants. We show our appreciation by supporting them. Become a Kitchen Angel!! On March 6 th, we heard the story of Purim and made Purim cookies with cookie cutters. They were delicious. The children also assembled 13 Shaloch Manot bags to give out to some of our elderly or ill members. They were loaded with many treats including hamentaschen. Our Kid and Tot Shabbat on Friday, March 18 was very well attended. We are always glad to welcome new faces. Thanks go to: Jesse Acosta for sponsoring this event; Saralee Morrissey, Evan Sherman, and Mike Chuvan for helping set up; and Lisa Ravede for helping with the clean-up. Please come to the Jewish Heritage Festival on Sunday, April 3 at the Casements in Ormond Beach from 11:00-5:00. It has many exciting things for children and adults. On Sunday March 13, our Purim fun continued. It was a very busy day. We made hamentaschen, Rabbi blessed the pets, there were crafts, and wonderful inflatables for the children to enjoy. Sidney Nussbaum and Alannah Silverstein were great teacher assistants and thanks to all the parents who helped run some of the events. 8 Page 8 Torah Times Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties 470 Andalusia Avenue-Ormond Beach, Florida (386) Dear Congregants It is good to be back and I want to thank everyone for their prayers, visits and well wishes and the abundance of food that was made for Ray and myself, especially the Chabad ladies who every week for months have made us a Shabbat meal. The Challah Bake they did in my honor had 130 women from various temples attending and this was very gratifying. The tables were set beautifully. the food served was excellent and everyone learned how to make challah. This was first class and I was glad that my sister-in-law from Toronto, Ontario, Canada was able to attend. Unfortunately, the Dr. could not get all the cancer and I will start chemo again soon A lot of prayers are being said for me and I have faith that I will be here for a long time. While I was in rehab, a number of angels have been putting our garage items in order. They hail from Colorado and are here for a number of months. I happened to answer the phone when they first called in January and they phoned our office by mistake wanting to do missionary work. I questioned them what they wanted to do and they said they would be willing to do anything that was asked of them as long as it was for a charity organization that did for the poor. I then told them what we do and they said, okay, we will help you. Believe me when I say they are angels. Their names are Elders Gerald and Vickie and they are from the church of the Latter Day Saints. They also enlisted two teenagers from Iowa, Sister Nelson and Sister Kellog -- these teenagers are required by their order to give their time to a charity organization. They both live in Iowa and they will be returning March 30th. None of them have tried to proselytize us. What a gift they all have been. The Community Wide Shabbat was a great success and our speaker, now the Vice President of Tel Aviv University, Amos Elad, reiterated all the good works we did through him, namely the 7 bomb shelters that we built for children in the poorest neighborhoods of Israel. He also emphasized that we must continue to help Israel's poorest people. Thank you Lynne Ritter, for her chairmanship of this event, Rabbi Z, and the many helpers especially Steve, Jill and Therese all employees of Temple Beth-el. Thank you to Rita Lee, and Debra Simms who have assisted me in calling people for pledges. If you get a call, remember they are not calling for themselves but for people who need our assistance. The Endowment fund's grants have had 3 great events. One at Temple Beth-el co-joined with Temple Israel had a fantastic crowd of 400 to hear Cantor Gerald Zelemyer, one at Temple Israel of Deland where Dov Brenner entertained a sizeable crowd and one at Temple Beth Shalom who had the Hillel Group from Queens College of New York and the crowd just loved them. Thank you Temple Beth Shalom and Temple Israel of Deland for raising a sizeable sum for the Jerry Doliner Food Bank. Temple Beth-el & Temple Israel pitched in their own $1,000 to supplement what the Endowment grant gave them. These events were free and open to the public. The Endowment Fund is a grand sponsor of the Heritage Festival and they contributed $10,800 for this special event which will be held on April 3, The Greek Restaurant Greektown Taverna had a special evening where they contributed over $800 for the Jerry Doliner Food Bank and the Young Professional Group of Ormond Beach also had a special evening at Stonewood Restaurant and they contributed not only food but also $ January thru February, we received for the food bank a lot of funds because of Andrea and Larry Franks match. We will be having a Passover luncheon for the seniors in nursing homes, assisted living and people who are over 80 years young. Also, if all goes well, we will have a Walk-a-thon sponsored by Congregation B'nai Torah on May 1st. Thank you Rabbi Kane for always initiating this for the Jerry Doliner Food Bank Wishing you a joyful Purim and enjoy the Heritage Festival which is on April 3rd at Rockefeller Center. Dr. Howard Pranikoff, DDS MScD President Gloria Max Executive Director

Rabbi Kane said last year about 70 people attended the Seder and the Temple can seat about 110. Admission is $40 for an adult and $20 for children ages 5 to 13. Kids 4 and younger are admitted free. We ve always had a Seder, Rabbi Kane said in the temple s 18 years of existence. It s good for singles or for small families whose relatives live out of town. We re a good substitute. He added: No one should go hungry on Passover. And at B nai Torah, no one should go lonely on Passover. Checks to reserve a Seder seat should be delivered to the temple office no later than April 15 th. Payment will not be accepted at the door. Call to make reservations.
