1 February 2015 Shevat-Adar 5775 Volume 23, Issue 2 Torah Times Bat Mitzvah Beauties by Ray Weiss Three members of Congregation B nai Torah in January sure lived up to the adage better-late-than-never by accomplishing something in adulthood that s usually a childhood rite of passage. After 18 months of study with Rabbi David Kane, Diane Beitscher, Helen Farb, and Lisa Rhodes celebrated a Bat Mitzvah. It was a challenging, yet rewarding journey that provided an opportunity for them to delve deeper into their Jewish faith. None of us knew Hebrew. We had to learn that first. That was the first step, the initial motivation, and then the bat mitzvah class, said Rhodes, whose son is a cantor in the greater Houston area. Why now? The rabbi said he was having a class, and it was as good a time as any. I wanted to be able to make services more meaningful. Now I can read in Hebrew and feel more a part of it. She said learning as part of a team provided support when roadblocks occurred by having partners to lean on. She recommended that other women and men in the congregation consider having a Bat Mitzvah or Bar Mitzvah later in life, especially if they didn t have one as a youngster. Diane Beitscher, Helen Farb, and Lisa Rhodes The rabbi is available to teach the classes when congregants express the interest. Their (Bat Mitzvah) service was very awesome. They did so well, Rabbi Kane said of the Jan. 3 service by the three women. It was a pleasure teaching them. Adults exceed children in their ability to grasp religious and spiritual concepts. But adults find it harder to learn as we age. Our memories are not as good. Beitscher said learning Hebrew was something she always wanted to do. But as a child, girls did not have the option for a bat mitzvah at most synagogues like hers. I always wanted to understand the structure of the service better, Beitscher said. Ironically, her three young grandchildren have already begun Hebrew lessons. I felt grandma should do it, too, she said, laughing. I thought our bat mitzvah turned out great. A lot of our friends came. It was a nice atmosphere. Helen Farb said she first discussed with Beitscher the idea of having a bat mitzvah as adults. Neither one of us thought it would be a lot of work, she said, laughing. Surprise! Farb said the time in life seemed right to commit to doing the work, and that it helped to be with other adult classmates. I feel great, she said. I m so glad I did it. 3 President s Message: Dr. Charles Stein & Bari Amols Dear Congregants: As we embark on 2015, I want to report that the State of Congregation B nai Torah is healthy and vibrant. While our Rabbi was out, Rabbi Shapiro provided inspirational and educational services and Rabbi Kane has completed the move to his current home and is back from vacation. We are making preparations for the upcoming election of officers and board which will occur at the annual congregational meeting in a few months. There will also be several changes to our by-laws to consider at the annual meeting. Dues and pledges are being paid or caught up and preparations are being made for the Deep Stack Tournament (to be renamed in honor of the memory of Scott Frank s father). We have several new members that have joined the CBT family: David Herstein, Zandra and Andy Dattel, and Peter and Becky Berman. So you see, many of your CBT family members are engaged in different activities to help assure that CBT remains healthy. A healthy CBT provides the venue for us to worship together and enjoy the camaraderie of the CBT family; improving the enjoyment and quality of life for all our members. A vibrant CBT promotes our creed: Together we honor G-d and Torah, promote spiritual growth, and strengthen our community. 6 Page 6 Torah Times Sisterhood News by Sue Goldberg Last month the Sisterhood hosted their Third Annual Mah Jongg Tournament! We extend special thanks to our Fund-raising Vice President, Sema Friedman and her Mah Jongg co-chair, Eileen Selis, and to all of our Kitchen Angels for a job well done. Sisterhood endeavors take much time and effort to plan and implement, once again, our Sisterhood did their magic to rise to the occasion. Sema and Eileen worked diligently on the tournament. Their hard work paid off as everyone enjoyed competitive Mah Jongg. The big winner was Barbara Jacobs, who walked away with a cash prize and a lovely basket of goodies. The lunch was delicious and the sweets were wonderful. How do our ladies do it? With our little tiny kitchen and many good cooks we continue to produce excellent quality, tasty, and attractive meals that everyone enjoys. Program chair, Evelyn Ladau, has more interesting and interactive programs planned in the near future. Watch your s from Barbara Goldstein who does a fabulous job getting our information to all our members! We hope to see you there. Helen Farb graciously accepted to chair the Sisterhood Nominating Committee THANK YOU Helen!!! Please, Sisterhood wants and needs our members to step up and accept positions on the board, think about what your impact could be joining the board of so many fabulous, dedicated and innovative women! Contact Helen Farb if you have any interest to serve on the Sisterhood board. We served 170 people. I would like to thank Ellen and Alan Rabin, Sharon Green, Jesse Acosta, Beth Waltzer, Mike Kahn, Helayne Schreiber, Allison and Alannah Silverstein, Mary and Katie Yukon, Dr. Mindy and friend, and Ken and Sydney Nusbaum for helping us prepare the food in the morning. Everyone pitched in to make vegetable salad, fruit salad, fold laundry, cut and prepare desserts, and butter many pieces of bread. At 11:00 the people with children were fed. At 11:30 those on the street were fed until 1:00. Bev and Marvin Lewis, Maria and Jim Saulis, and Judy Korcz came then and helped serve food and dessert, and keep the dining room clean and running smoothly. I would also like to give special thanks to Ellen, Alan, Sharon, Helayne and Mike for staying for both shifts. Mike Kahn was able to keep the plates and silverware washed and back out in a timely manner and cleaned all the pans. Ellen, Alan, Sharon and Helayne stayed to help serve the food. 7 Page 7 Volume 23, Issue 2 JEWISH FEDERATION OF VOLUSIA AND FLAGLER COUNTIES 470 Andalusia Avenue - Ormond Beach, Florida (386) FAX. # (386) Dear Congregants: We really thought we would be slowing down in our food give-away during the month of January but in reality we are busier than ever. We pride ourselves in helping the less fortunate, especially working families that just can t make ends meet. On Sunday, February 8 th, there will be a Walk-a-Thon sponsored by Congregation B nai Torah. The cost is $18.00 and hot dogs and chips will be served after the walk. T-shirts will be available and sponsors names will be put on the t-shirts. Sponsorships are $ Please consider being a sponsor for the Walk-a- Thon. All proceeds will benefit this very important Jerry Doliner Food Bank that helps families throughout Volusia and Flagler Counties. We are also in dire need of volunteers to help with the Food Bank. Please call us at if you are able to help. What happened in Paris recently was shameful. I appreciated the Daytona News Journal for publishing my letter to the Editor. We recently sent funds to support a shelter at the Jerusalem Hills Therapeutic Center which will address the critical issue of the children s safety during crises of national security and which will be used in non-emergency times for education, therapeutic and recreational benefit of the children. This campus is in Kiryat Ye-arim in the Judean Hills. These kids are of normal intelligence, but they bear psychological scars that distort their behavior and make normative human interaction virtually impossible. Without the help of this center, these children would endure lives in the criminal justice system or the psychiatric facilities of Israel. This institution is credited with having the highest success rate of any institution of its kind-close to 70%. These children move on to successfully complete mandatory military service, have families of their own, and lead healthy successful adult lives. Please give to the 2015 campaign and your funds will be earmarked to finish this bomb shelter. Again, a Happy & Healthy New Year! Dr. Howard Pranikoff, President Gloria Max, Executive Director We all left tired but thankful for what we have. The people always thanks us and tell US to have a blessed day. We had to turn away some help in the morning because there were too many to help and not enough to help in the afternoon. It is also very important to let the office know which shift you are able to come to volunteer, so this does not happen.

8 Page 8 Torah Times Men s Club News The Men's Club started the New Year with a breakfast meeting at Mango Sun. The meeting was the official kickoff for our community service project, The Police Unity Tour Pasta Dinner." The primary purpose of the Police Unity Tour is to raise awareness of Law Enforcement Officers who have died in the line of duty. The secondary purpose is to raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Officer s Memorial and Museum. Our sponsorship is an excellent way for the synagogue to express its appreciation to local law enforcement and raise awareness for the congregation in the community. The dinner is scheduled to take place at Mango Sun on Sunday, March 1, 2015 from 5-9 PM. Our goal is to sell 300 tickets. The Police Department and Mango Sun are assisting with ticket sales, but we the need the full cooperation from all of the Men's Club, Temple Board and Sisterhood members to sell tickets. Ask your friends, neighbors, and family to participate in this special dinner, and order your tickets. The tickets cost $10.00 and Mango Sun is donating half of all ticket sales to our effort. Please pick up your tickets from Helena at the CBT office. We need to support our local police officers for all they do to keep us safe in our community. Our next meeting will be held on Wed., February 4, 2015, at Malcolm's Bar and Grill at LPGA Country Club. In addition to our regular meeting we will be holding a special election to replace two board members. One of our board members is relocating and another has resigned. If you are interested in taking a more active role on the board of the Men s Club please contact Chuck Weisman at (513) To attend the dinner meeting please RSVP to Helena in the CBT office ASAP. We are pleased to announce that we sold out our Box for the Orlando Magic game. Thank you to everyone that responded to our first basketball event. If you are not already a member of the Men's Club please consider joining. If you are a member please consider becoming more actively involved. If you have any questions about membership please contact the Synagogue Office and an officer of the Men s Club will get back to you. Religious School News by Helen Farb (pictures on page 2) On Friday, January 23, we had a lovely Tot Shabbat sponsored by Marvin and Bev Lewis. Rabbi Kane always gets on his special rug to tell stories and teach songs. It is always very lively. We had sixteen people in attendance and ate franks and beans, salad, and dessert. Thanks to all those who attended. On Sunday, January 25 we celebrated Tu B'Shevat (the season for planting trees in Israel). Rabbi told us that this is always the fifteenth day of the month of Shevat. The children painted flower pots and then planted perfectly, purple, painted Pansies. It got a bit messy, but everyone's plant looked good when we were done. Our snacks were fruits from trees: bananas, oranges, and apples We also ate delicious Girl Scout cookies. After our snack, we divided into groups. Esther Morse taught about Abraham. The Rabbi worked with the older children on Jewish Ethics and Values. The youngest children pasted pictures of many things made from trees. Rosalie Morrissey and Ivy Evans are great helpers. Looking forward to a fun two months. Here are some dates to put on your February calendar: Tot Shabbat Fri., February 6 at 6:00 pm Learning Adventure Sun., Feb. 8 at 10:00 am and the Jerry Doliner Walk-a-Thon at 12:30 pm (followed by hot dogs) Sunday School, Sun., Feb 22 at 10:00 am

Why 4 "happys?" Well it has nothing to do with January first. The Jewish calendar actually has four New Year s dates. This month, we celebrate the new year of the trees. We acknowledge our relationship to and responsibility for the natural world. We also express our gratitude for all of the wonderful edible divine creations. Each fall we celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the start of the Jewish civil calendar and the anniversary of the creation of mankind. We express our gratitude for the ability to change and the ability to start again on life's spiritual journey. Each spring, the Torah marks the first of Nissan as a new year. This is the anniversary of our people-hood also the start of the farm cultivation season. We appreciate each other, especially within our families and communities. This is the Finally, there is a relatively obscure New Year, the first of Elul, the anniversary of the tithing for cattle in ancient times. We pause and consider how blessed we are to be able to work, and to share the fruits of our labors. The Rabbis tell us wherever we are during the year, we are never far away from a reason to appreciate God's gifts, each other, or the divine mystery of our ever changing souls.
