May/June Iyar 17 Tammuz Volume 26 Issue 3 Together we honor G-d and Torah, Promote Spiritual Growth, and Strengthen Our Community Special Points of Interest: Picture Review pg. 2 CBT President s Message pg. 3 May/June Schedule pg. 7 HELLO WE MUST BE GOING.. As your now former Co-Presidents some reflections on our term the past two years: We are very proud that our congregation is currently financially solvent despite starting off with a significant deficit two years ago. Thank you to all of our members who paid their dues and to those people who have Congregation B nai Torah in their hearts and who made generous pledges and donations each year. Fundraising We also thank Scott Frank, Chuck Weisman and our Rabbi for their tireless efforts in making our annual poker tournament the success it has been, especially the last two. Without their extraordinary efforts and we emphasize the word extraordinary we would be in dire financial straits. I know that they are working hard to make the upcoming tournament another huge success. Speaking of the tireless Chuck Weisman, he has taken on the role of Men s Club President and his work has already made a difference. Thanks to Chuck and committee Chairperson Dr. Charles Stein they resurrected the Rhodes Rally which was rebranded as the Charity Road Rally and turned out to be a success because they were able to engage local businesses and individuals to sponsor and participate in the event for the first time. Of course it goes without saying (but we are saying it) that Dr. Richard Rhodes thought provoking clues were the reason the event was not only so much fun but extremely challenging. We know that everyone is looking forward to an even bigger and better event next year. Welcome Andy New President Andy Dattel stole some of our thunder in recapping some of the excitement that occurred last year. Suffice it to say that we thank all of the people mentioned in his article. Two items of note that were not mentioned are the passing of amendments to our By -laws and that Rabbi Kane signed a new contract agreeing to be our Rabbi for at least another five years. Thank you to Harvey Singer, Ken Haberman and Dr. Charles Stein for their work on the By-Laws To be continued on pg Inside this issue: Cover Story 1 Presidents Message Religious School Report 4 Calendars 8/9 Jewish Federation 12 CBT Road Rally Pictures 13 Donations Needed 14/15 Graduates 16/17 Anastasia Chuven 18 Birthdays and Anniversaries 3 20 Rabbi s Column 24

Page 3 President s Message by Andy Dattel First, I want to say that it is a true honor to represent CBT as president of the congregation. Second, I look forward to working with the other officers, board members, the Rabbi, and the wonderful members of the congregation. Some great things happened at CBT during the last several months. The community Passover seder was attended by over 100 people on March 30th, the largest seder attendance in the history of CBT; a huge thank you to the Sisterhood. Mazel Tov to Jesse Acosta and Rita Pender who were blessed with holy matrimony under the chupah in our sanctuary on March 29th. The 1st Annual Road Rally, held on April 22nd, was a great success despite the uncooperating weather. Thank you Helen Farb for leading another wonderful year of religious school and thank you Chana Zimmerman for another successful year of Jewish High School. A special thanks to Hallie Silverstein, Grace Silverstein, Alannah Silverstein, Joshua Liebman, and Asher Ravede for their dedication and commitment to the religious school. The students soundly defeated the parents in the end of the school year Parents/Students kickball game. However, it is questionable if the Rabbi was biased in his umpiring. Anastasia Chuven will be celebrating her Bat Mitzvah on Friday, June 8th and Saturday, June 9th. Please join us for Shavuot services at 9:30am on Sunday, May 20th and for Shavuot/ Yiskor services at 9:30am on Monday, May 21st. Lunch and Learn will be on Sunday, May 20th and will be led by Dr. Ken Nussbaum. Our next Tot Shabbat will be held on June 15th 6:00pm. Just a reminder that CBT will have a 20th birthday bash Saturday night, October 27th at the Shores Resort in Daytona Beach. Please contact the office at if you are interested in attending the Show Dogs movie with Rabbi Kane on Sunday, May 27th. The Ada Siegel committee will be sponsoring a Klezmer concert that will be held on Sunday, June 10th at 2:30pm in the Sanctuary. Remember, all are welcome to our weekly Friday night services held at 7:30pm and weekly Shabbat morning services at 10:00am I look forward to seeing y all at services. Andy

Page 4 END OF THE YEAR RELIGIOUS SCHOOL REPORT 2018 by Helen Farb Our Sunday School had a very fun filled, active year. We celebrated Kid and Tot Shabbat every month with many families. Rabbi always told Jewish stories, songs. And blessings and has fun interacting with all the children. It was also a wonderful time for the children and parents to share a meal. We usually got people. The Religious School had students ages We added a Hebrew High School for those who have had a Bat or Bar Mitzvah. This is being taught by Channah Zimmermann. In August, Rabbi and Val Kane invited everyone to a Splash party with swimming and food. We also had a good Sunday School cleaning. Our school room was painted by Allison Silverstein and family with the help of Jerry and Adam Epstein. Allanah Silverstein painted a gorgeous Tree of Life mural on a wall. September and October were busy holiday months. We made Shema pillowcases with our grandparents and other adults. On Rosh Hashanah, the students learned about the holiday and made a challah and cards for those who were ill. On Sukkot, each child decorated the Sukkah and had a chance to wave the luluv and smell the etrog. In October we started a new magazine series Mitzvah and Me with the younger children. Each issue dealt with a specific mitvah and had activities included. The older children worked with Rabbi Kane and Asher Ravede and learned the meaning of prayer in the Friday night service. They have worked on the grouping of certain ideas and the order of the prayers. They have learned these prayers and most can do much of the Friday Shabbat service in Hebrew. We also went Trick or Treating for Hunger with the students from Beth El/Temple Israel. All the food collected went to the Jewish Federation Food Bank. In November, we continued to do a Mitzvah by going to the Bridge of Hope Soup Kitchen. Our volunteers helped serve lunch to the homeless. We were busy in December celebrating Hanukkah and joined other synagogues at the City of Daytona Hanukkah Festival. Thanks to Alannah Siverstein and her friend for face painting. Our youth helped at our booth, served food, and performed Hanukkah songs on stage with Rabbi Zev and Rabbi Kane. January was full of many activities. The younger children learned about King David. They also helped Judy Kane clean up the Serenity Garden for Tu B'Shevat. She has worked hard to make our synagogue look beautiful. February is always fun because we celebrated Purim and read the Megillah, had a carnival, and made hamentashen. The costumes and play were hilarious The children performed a mitzvah and made and delivered Shelach Manot baskets to those who were ill. March was spent preparing songs and stories about Passover and learning about the mitzvah Being Kind. The next Sunday, the children made matzo ball soup with Ken Nussbaum and charoses with Esther Morse and Lisa Ravede. We then had a lovely Model Seder with the parents and children. Rabbi Kane led and the older students read the four questions. We all participated in the Jewish Heritage Festival at the Casements in April. Thanks to the students who helped at the B'nai Torah Booth and many thanks to Alannah Silverstein for face painting. We ended the year with the Mitzvah Being Kind and being a friend. There was also a rousing game of kickball, parents vs students. Our school year would not have been successful with out the help of many people, especially Andy Dattel, the religious school cochairman. Grace and Hallie Silverstein and Asher Ravede were invaluable classroom helpers. Rabbi Kane and I both could not have managed without them. Josh Liebman and Alannah Silverstein were also there to help when called upon. Betty Berdichevsky has also helped with the Religious school. Continued Pg. 5

Page 5 Trick or Treat for Hunger Hanukkah Festival Purim Festival Kid & Tot Shabbat HUM Continued from Pg. 4 Thanks also to Alan Kisseloff who fixed the insulation in the ceiling so we could be more comfortable and got us kitchen and bathroom supplies. We could not have had a successful year if we had not had the parent s support and help at the Kid and Tot Shabbats and all our special events. YOU FOUND OUR CONTEST If you are reading this you can be entered to win A Tree of Life planted in Israel dedicated to you or whomever you like. Call or the office before June 15th in order to be entered.

Continued from pg. 1 committee and an additional thank you to Harvey for undertaking the enormous task of updating and correcting our Yahrtzeit list. Our Awesome Executive Board We would also like to thank our Co-Treasurers, Barbara Singer and Harry Lasris for their efforts in cleaning up our books by getting a good handle on our bad debts and making sure invoices were sent out in a timely fashion. Harry also did a masterful job of getting our books organized which will go a long way toward helping future Treasurers manage our finances. In addition, we thank Vice-President Ken Haberman for his work in maintaining our buildings and grounds as well as our air conditioning units. Our gratitude to Secretary Robin Freedman for taking accurate copious minutes at our Executive committee, board and annual meetings. Her smiling countenance is always a joy to behold. Delicious Sisterhood We say kudos to the ladies of our Sisterhood who even without a President made sure that our Kiddushes, Onegs and special events were beautifully catered. No one will ever starve at B nai Torah! What some of you may not know is that our Sisterhood is not only a generous donor to our synagogue but that they are also generous to our community as well; for instance this year they gave out Seder meals to those members of another congregation in need. We would be remiss if we did not thank Lea Moskowitz who helped steer the Sisterhood and manage our Kosher kitchen. Although not technically a Co- President of the synagogue, she made sure that we did what we were supposed to do and did it correctly. Last but not least, thank you to the members of our Board of Directors for your support, effort and input in keeping the synagogue running smoothly the past two years. Lest I forget and before I end this lengthy discourse, I personally want to thank my Co- President Charlie Moskowitz for not only mentoring me these past two years but also for everything that he does for the synagogue especially his weekly Torah readings and for so ably assisting the Rabbi and our Ritual Chairperson Debra Rodensky in conducting all of our weekly and holiday services. I do not know of anyone (other than possibly Lea) more dedicated to our congregation s well-being than Charlie. In closing, it was an honor and a privilege serving as Co-President of this twenty year old thriving little synagogue these past two years. It was a joy getting to know and socialize with so many of our fellow congregants. Please continue to attend services as often as possible and support our new President Andy Dattel, the officers and Board of our congregation. Alan and Charlie

Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties 470 Andalusia Avenue-Ormond Beach, Florida (386) Dear Congregants, I am glad that Rabbi Kane is recovering from his cancer surgery. He is a special Rabbi who immediately says prayers when he finds out you are sick and visits the hospital. We are grateful that Sue Abel came thru her surgery with flying colors and pray that Mike Farb will recover quickly. On Sunday, April 11:00 a.m. the Jewish Heritage Festival was held at the Casements. Lots to see and do and we are proud that the Endowment Fund of the Jewish Federation was the grand sponsor of $10,800 for this Festival. The Federation had a booth and we showcased the I.D.F. Lone Soldiers Project, the backpack program and the Jerry Doliner Food Bank. We raffled off items every hour to benefit, the Food Bank, the School Supply Project and the ID lone soldier program. The lone soldiers are men and women who leave their families from all over the world to fight for Israel. One grandmother in Ormond Beach has a grandson who made aliyah and is in a special top secret unit. We made $ Thank you President Marvin Miller for getting the raffling items-they were really nice things. Thank you Howard Krugman, Cory Lancaster, Carolyn Hill, Ray Max, Jeffrey Max and Dr. Howard Pranikoff and Marvin Miller for all their help. A big thank you to Murray Steinberg who worked continuously and all the other folks who made this Heritage Festival such a success. The almighty was with us it didn t rain until 3:30pm Ray and I heard our own Jeff Bigman on the radio with Mark Burnier and he was terrific. Mark gave him an entire hour. Bravo again to everyone who made this event such a success. On Sunday, April 7:30 p.m. at Chabad of Greater Dayton Beach, Jewish Federation and Chabad had a Holocaust Remembrance evening. We had six Holocaust survivors light red candles in memory of the 6 million that perished and 98 year old Marthe Kohen lit a candle in honor of the righteous gentiles that liberated and saved Jews. Pastor Matt McKenzie sang the song Ani Maman which means I Believe. Some of the concentration victims marched to the gas chambers singing this song. We heard 15 year old Colleen Coupling before at our Board Meeting and she wowed the 275 folks that came. Marthe Kohen told her story of being an undercover spy. She was very spry and she in my opinion was amazing. She recited history and dates like you wouldn t believe. Her schedule afterward was unbelievable. A 50 year old couldn t do it. The refreshments afterwards were enjoyed by all and she does not charge for speaking but we had to fly her and her husband first class from California and put them up in a hotel. We thank Congregation B'nai Torah for announcing that through their Road Rally, they will be giving some funds to the Food Bank. We also thank the Postal Services for bringing us a lot of good food thru their drive and thank you to all the volunteers who helped sort the mountain of food. Rabbi Sonnenstein of Temple Beth Shalom received a grant from the Endowment Fund of the Federation and he brought in Bizu Wiki Riki Mullu -an Ambassador-an Ethiopian Jewish and Israeli entrepreneur. Everyone thought she was fantastic. By the time you get this Bulletin, I hope you attended the 70th Anniversary of Israel at the Living Cornerstone Church on May 6:30 p.m. Rabbi S. David Kane was the main speaker. Christians and Jews together came to bless Israel. How fitting this day was because this was the day that Jerusalem became he capital of Israel. Thank you Susanne Wiggins for arranging this evening. On Sunday, June 10th -2:30 pm, the Federation is proud to cohost with the Ada Siegel Fund of Congregation Bnai Torah a Klezmer Concert. This is free and open to the public. Please help us buy at least 1 backpack with supplies for a needy local child. An $80 value for $ We have a match for May, June and July if we raise $40,000. Otherwise we won't get the funds. Please help at least one less fortunate child that the counselors choose at the 81 local schools that are the recipients. 100% of your funds purchases the backpacks filled with supplies. Thank you to Lynne Ritter who gave the Bat Mitzi gift to Amelie Hannah Kurlander at Temple Beth-el. Shalom, Marvin Miller, President Gloria Max, Executive Director

Alannah's Plant Your Way to Israel Fundraiser! Hello all! This summer, I will hopefully be attending the Alexander Muss High School in Israel program due in part to the generosity of Congregation B Nai Torah. In effort to raise funds for extra expenses for the trip, I ve joined forces with the Jewish National Fund and started a Plant Your Way to Israel fundraiser! When a donation is made under my fundraising page, 50% of the funds go into a savings account specifically for my trip, and the other 50% goes to funding the planting of trees in Israel! Each donation means a lot because it s not only helping to support my education and experience in Israel, but a great cause as well! ANY donation is greatly appreciated, as well as the sharing of my fundraiser link to others. You can access, share, and donate at px= &pg=personal&fr_id=1861#.wuflcgnevme.em ail. Feel free to call me at with questions, and I hope to be able to share my Israel experience with everyone when I get back! Blessings and thanks, Alannah Silverstein

Page 15 Anastasia has chosen a Mitzvah Project to benefit the Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler County s Backpack Program. The Jewish Federation instituted a program 19 years ago to provide quality backpacks filled with school supplies at the beginning of the school year to Volusia & Flagler County school children in elementary, middle, and high school via the school s counselors. 16 2018 I am graduating from Seabreeze High School and I will be attending the University of Florida starting in the summer. I plan on pursuing a degree in the health sciences. TO I will be graduating from Spruce Creek High School this coming June. This summer I will be studying abroad in Israel thanks to the generosity of Congregation B Nai Torah, and will be attending the Alexander Muss High School in Israel. There I will be taking several honors courses to earn college credit. When I returns from Israel, Iwill be attending Daytona State College to take my prerequisite courses and participate in their performing arts program. The thing I will remember most from High School is all the amazing people and friends I have met and how they have helped me grow into the person I am today. TO

Page 17 I graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Health Science. My major was Communication Sciences and Disorders with a minor in Disabilities in Society. I can proudly relay that I will be a Double Gator as I pursue a Master or Arts in Speech Language Pathology this Fall at UF! I will always remember the friendships I have made during my undergraduate years and the professional development that I have experienced in my field. I just graduated from UCF s College of Engineering and Computer Science with my Bachelors of Science in Environmental Engineering. I m currently pursuing employment in the Solid Waste Disposal Design field here in Florida. Spirit Splash and the Knights football team going undefeated are some of my fondest memories, but I was honestly shocked at how challenging my courses were at times. I recently graduated from the University of Central Florida in Orlando with a Bachelor s degree in Accounting. My plans for this summer are to continue studying for the CPA exam and take it before I begin graduate school at UCF this coming fall. From there I plan on working in public accounting for an auditing firm and eventually move into health care/nonprofit after a few years. College was definitely an interesting experience, but I ll never forget the friendships made from the clubs and activities I participated in over the years. I ll cherish those memories for a lifetime!
