2 VOLUME 9, ISSUE 5 The Desk of Rabbi S. David Kane... Dear Friends, Valerie and I are about to experience one of the highest honors that a Rabbinic family can be involved in that is, leading a group to Israel. As you may recall, I lived in Israel for an entire summer after our first few years as a congregation. Val has been to the holly land many times. We both hold in our hearts a deep love for the country and especially for the people. We admire their courage, their intelligence their compassion and their determination. This week our group will explore Israel from many different points of view including religious, secular, historical, humanistic, artistic and most importantly gastronomic. Israel is truly one of the most special places on the face of the earth. If you wanted to join us for this trip but were unable to work the details out pencil in summer 2009 onto your calendar. Or, perhaps we will go during a different season. Valerie and I wish you a wonderful June and July. We look forward to the PAGE 2 start of our 10th year coming up this August. If you would like weekly up date please let Vicki know and she will either them to you or mail them to you. May 30th we are off to Israel with our group. Message from the President This month s message by: Jo Ann Singer Shalom, Lea and I have been busy finding out, and getting a good start on all our presidential duties. We met with the Rabbi and discussed near and longer-term issues for the upcoming year. We also recruited congregants to be committee chairs and members. If there is a committee (Buildings & Grounds, Fundraising, Membership, Religious School, Ritual, or other) that you would be willing to be an active participant on, please let Lea or me know. Our congregation continues to be a warm, friendly, caring, and responsible family. Our Annual Congregation Meeting was held on Sunday, May 6 th. Many congregants attended, expressed their opinions, and voted to elect our new Officers and Trustees. Lea and I are looking forward to working with our new and returning Board members. Your leadership is appreciated. Thanks to our Sisterhood for providing delicious refreshments at the Annual meeting and for all our services and events. Thanks also to Bruce Barenbaum for coming up with the idea, and carrying out the project, for the decorative tiles on the ramp into the Temple. We celebrated the Festival of Shavuot on Wednesday and Thursday, May 23 rd and 24 th. Rabbi Kane made blintzes as a treat for those people who attended the 1 st day service. Thanks to all those who attended the Shavuot services. The Bar Mitzvah of Jordan Turetsky on Friday and Saturday, May 25 th and 26 th, was another wonderful lifecycle event for the Turetsky family and Congregation B nai Torah. Mazel Tov to Jordan and the Turetsky family. Our condolences to Norman and Roberta Feldman on the passing of Ida Benson, Norm s Mother. When she was well, Ida attended many Shabbat morning services. Cantor Rhodes will be with us during June and July, while the Rabbi is visiting Israel and finishing his Sabbatical leave during the 1 st year of his current 3-year contract. Cantor Rhodes will be conducting Shabbat services and working with the youth approaching their Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. Rabbi Kane will be back full-time in August. Just a reminder, our fiscal year starts June 1 st. Your dues payments would be greatly appreciated so that we can continue to pay our bills during the summer. Our expenses are basically the same every month. Please let our Treasurer, Barbara Cohen know how you plan to pay quarterly, monthly, other (specific timing) so that we know what to expect. We look forward to serving Congregation B nai Torah. This is our Heritage 10 th year of operation. There will be new and exciting fundraising as well as cultural and educational programs. Everyone will have opportunities for participation, making this a great year for Lea and me. We welcome your suggestions and creative ideas. As summer begins, we wish you happiness and good health throughout this time period. Please plan on attending at least one Shabbat evening and morning service each month so that we stay connected with each other and support those who need a minyan present to say Kaddish. Our monthly Board meeting in June will be on Thursday, June 21 st, at 7 pm at the Temple. Lea and Jo Ann

3 VOLUME 9, ISSUE 5 PAGE 3 SISTERHOOD NEWS: President Caryl Shalett Sisterhood has had another good year both financially and socially. Our many and varied activities have kept us busy throughout the year. Our annual Journal was most successful and our gift shop has also enjoyed a successful year and is stacked with many beautiful and meaningful Jewish gifts.. The catering committee has prepared many Onegs, Chanukah and Shabbat dinners as well as Bat & Bar Mitzvah luncheons. We had a most successful enjoyable fashion show presented by Chico's and it was modeled by our own members. As a result of the endeavors of our members we have been able to exceed our pledged commitment of $8,000 to the Synagogue with an additional $2,000 bringing our total contribution to $10,000. After a short summer hiatus, we shall begin working on our annual Journal. This is our most important project so please help us to reach all our goals. I would like to thank all my officers and members for their cooperation, hard work and support. Many thanks, Caryl Shalett, President FUND RAISING REPORT Look here for updated information as we look to a new very productive year for 2007/08 Paula Barenbaum Sue & Irv Abel Evelyn & Harry Blankenstein Elizabeth Caplan Barbara Goldstein Lynn Hartman Carole & Jerry Miller Sema Friedman Barbara Goldstein Ray Greene GET WELL WISHES Lynn Hartman Elizabeth Caplan Barbara Goldstein Carole & Jerry Miller Ray Max Lynn Hartman My sincere appreciation to everyone who sent cards, and good wishes for a speedy recovery. Thank you very much. Paula Barenbaum Our Old Shabbat Prayer books We have now started using our new Shabbat Prayer books Siddur Hadash (dark blue book to be used at all Shabbat & Festival services). As part of the transition to the new books we have gathered up and removed our old prayer books from the Temple. While our Board has yet to decide what to do with the old books, our first need is to record all their bookplate information for retention in the new books. This way we will continue to recognize the old book sponsors. Over the years some of the old prayer books may have been taken home by those who needed them personal use. Please let the Office know if you would like to have the opportunity to do so. Thanks for your help in this transition process, Rabbi Kane & Harvey Singer. Women working together, in support of the Temple. THE DONATION CORNER A donation was given to Rabbi Kane s discretionary fund to thank him for his Hebrew Classes. : Carolann Applegate RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS Ken Haberman I would like to welcome to the Religious School Board,Susan Stein, Deigo Handel and Ray Weiss. Saralee Morrissey will remain Treasurer. Rabbi Kane has presented information relative to the next school year and expressed his desire to try a nontraditional religious school program which he believed would not be acceptable to the Temple Israel congregation. With Rabbi Perras s retirement, he believed it might be the right time to reestablish CBT s religious school without combining with Temple Israel. Next year Congregation B'Nai Torah Religious School will be separate from Temple Israel. We still hope to get the children together with Temple Israel from time to time. A donation was given to Rabbi Kane s discretionary fund for his Educational trip to Missouri. Carol Hyman A donation was given to Rabbi Kane s discretionary fund to thank him for his friendship and memorial service for Amy Keller. : Robert Keller and Family A donation was given to Rabbi Kane s discretionary fund to congratulate him and Valerie on their 1st anniversary. : Dr. Mavis Green A donation was given to the Religious School in honor of M,L,C & S. Emily, Kyla, Sara & Tommy. 4 great students who were anything but Stooges!

I have prepared a variety of special services that will be taking place during these two months. The following Shabbat schedule lists the various services and their dates: June 1: Family Service (7pm), June 8: New Tunes and Adon Olam Rap Service June 15: Carlebach Service June 22: Choir Service June 29: Traditional Service July 6: Special Instrumental Family and Choir Service (7pm) July 13: Traditional Service July 20: Cantorial Service July 27: Choir Service. As you can see, the July 6 th Shabbat evening will involve musical instruments. I realize that this is a new element for our service. I felt obligated to be extra sensitive to this element. When I worked at Camp Ramah (which has its headquarters located in JTS), I experienced a very spiritual Shabbat. During the final moments of the regular weekday, we sang songs with instruments and dances. When Shabbat was about to begin, we put away the instruments and musically united with solely our voices. This distinguished the mood between the regular weekday and Shabbat, and in doing so, our Shabbat service felt even more spiritual. So, since our family service will begin over an hour before sunset, we will use instruments for the Kabbalat Shabbat service. the end of L cha Dodi (when we welcome in the Shabbat Bride), we will switch the mood by using our voices by themselves throughout the rest of the service. And now for Cantors Trivia! The answer to last month s Cantors Trivia is Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. Of course, we will be using some of his tunes for the June services. This month s Cantors Trivia question is, What is Nusach? Good luck! Musically, Cantor Lance Rhodes

At our Shabbat morning services we are now reading from Numbers, the 4 th book in the Torah, and will continue in this book until mid-june. 8 VOLUME 9, ISSUE 5 LIBRARY NOTES: : Jean Leonard PAGE 8 A call came from my Austin, Texas friend with the recommendation to read, The Ladies Auxiliary by Tova Miris. As it was a new title to me, I journeyed to the Ormond Beach Library and found a copy on the shelf. This book was my companion for weeks as it echoed so many of my thoughts. Since we have moved many times for career changes, we joined Temples or Synagogues in each place. In our early years in Smithtown, Long Island, New York, we were part of the starting of a congregation. Next move to Oneonta, New York, we found a delightful small synagogue with faculty and neighbors in a converted ranch house. Next on to Austin, Texas and a Temple filled with activity and friendship. Our latest move to Ormond Beach led to the discovery of a small congregation which we now feel part of. The Ladies Auxiliary takes you to Memphis, Tenn. where a group of women are the heart of a close-knit Jewish community. Into this scenario comes Batsheva, a young, beautiful, a convert and a widow with a small child. She has sought out this community because her recently deceased husband was raised there and the community was known for it's closeness. She hopes to make it her home with her kindergarten age daughter. > there it is an unraveling adventure for the reader as we learn about the talents of Batsheva and how the ladies relate to this "lost" young woman. Notable for her friendship and caring is the lovely Rabbi's wife Mimi. The book deals with issues we all face in our modern society and how individuals deal with them. The storyteller is not identified, but unites the story in a beautiful way. I would love a sequel to this book as I took many characters to my heart and wonder how their lives go on after the book ends. Sorry we don't own a copy but the system has copies in all the branches I was told by the Ormond Beach Librarian. A book you will find engrossing! Upon working on the piles of books donated to our library, the latest surprise is a set of Junior Judaica: Encyclopedia Judaica for Youth. Editor in Chief is Rabbi Dr. Raphael Posner. Although this was published in 1982 there is a great deal of information in the six volumes to find out about holidays, traditions, famous Jewish people through the centuries, cities and countries and their Jewish populations, historical events up to The sixth volume has a comprehensive index to the set. There is also a Jewish Calendar from in the back of volume 6. I found it interesting to look through and it is available as a reference tool for adults and students to use in the library. It is located on the bottom shelf of the children's collection in the library room. Keep reading and enjoy the company of books. Jean Leonard. MEMBERS NEWS AND NOTES Eugene Korash is still at Avante Rehab. Eugene enjoys receiving visitors from the Synagogue. We wish him a complete recovery. Carolann Applegate extends her appreciation to everyone who sent her birthday wishes. They meant a lot to her. To Lea Moskowitz & Jo Ann Singer, Best wishes & good luck in your new positions as Co-Presidents of Congregation B nai Torah. : Carole & Jerry Miller It was a lovely night at Mario s on Tuesday, May 8, The dinner, the ambiance, the service, all added to the pleasure of the evening.
