1 June 2015 Iyar-Sivan 5775 Volume 23, Issue 6 Torah Times Together we honor G-d and Torah, Promote Spiritual Growth, and Strengthen Our Community Special Points of Interest: CBT Photo Gallery pg. 2 Young Blood by Ray Weiss The economic bust hurt more than local wallets and home prices over the last few years. The downturn also hit religious institutions hard, including synagogues competing for a finite number of potential members. But times are improving and newly elected CBT president Saralee Morrissey said she is Summer of Awesome! by Ray Weiss Summer s months of steady heat and humidity can drain even the most energetic among us. A cold shower or Vitamin B-12 shot might offer a brief respite from the doldrums. But Congregation B nai Torah has come up with a more lasting and fun option: "The Summer of Awesome," being put together by Rabbi David Kane. It will be for everyone, lots of different elements that will include pool parties, Movies with the Rabbi and Havdallah (the conclusion of Shabbat at sunset) at the beach, he said. There will also be a series of guest speakers, local rabbis. Saralee Morrissey Newly elected CBT President The actual schedule is being finalized, but the concept is set and solid with a wide variety of events being planned for all ages and tastes. It starts June 5 th with Tot Shabbat and ends in August with a visit to the Central Florida Zoo. The congregation is about to turn 18, which is the number of life, Rabbi Kane said. So it s time. One regular event that's planned is Coffee, Cookies, and Current Events with Rabbi Kane, an informal gathering to discuss domestic and international news and its effect specifically on the Jewish placing a high priority on membership recruitment and retention. The demographics are clear: CBT needs young blood. One of my goals is that I would like our congregation's median age to decrease by 10 years, she said. Continued on page 6... community. I think there is a hunger to talk about Jewish current events on a monthly basis, he said. The Summer of Awesome will conclude at the end of August with the Jewish Zoo Adventure (in Sanford), an encore visit and biblically based scavenger hunt that was a big hit among adults and children several years ago. 3 President s Message by Saralee Morrissey Page 3 Q: What do David Letterman, the holiday of Shavout, and I have in common? Well, some might realize that David Letterman s retirement and my election as President happened within the same week as Shavout and that would be correct. But the other answer is top ten lists. Given that David Letterman had many top ten lists in his career, I will start my first list as B nai Torah president. My list probably has more in common with the top Ten Commandments, as given to us during the holiday of Shavout, but you can decide. My Relationship with CBT: 10. Strengthens my love for Judaism and causes me to realize that this Temple is very special and unique. 9. Enables me to have fulfilling relationships with multi-generations and other Jews. 8. Enables me to observe the Sabbath and Jewish holidays and have a more meaningful relationship with G-d. 7. Allows me to be a practicing and observant Jew in a way that is comfortable for me. 6. Helps me to be a better person. 5. Enables me to ensure that CBT's financial management, record keeping, billing, payments, and acknowledgements meet acceptable standards for nonprofit performance and accountability. 4. Enables me to encourage congregants to contribute to B nai Torah s finances, goals, and financial needs. 3. Enables me to ensure that CBT continues to offer opportunities for Jewish learning and socialization and meaningful holiday and Shabbat worship experiences. 2. Motivates me to work to ensure that Congregation B'nai Torah remains an attractive and desirable congregation that serves our Jewish community in the long term. 1. Makes me proud to be a Jew and a Member of Congregation B'nai Torah. 6 Page 6 Torah Times Sisterhood News by Barbara Goldstein and Sandy Zimbler We are at the beginning of a new congregational year. The two of us, as your copresidents, would very much like to see all of the women of CBT join the Sisterhood this year. Remember, the Sisterhood is the backbone of CBT. Our Sisterhood has been in existence for 17 plus years (the same as CBT) and like CBT, we are aging. New blood is needed for us to be able to continue to be the family oriented congregation that we are. The new Sisterhood Board of Trustees will be getting together over the summer months to discuss and plan a year of enriching programs to bring to our meetings. If you have any questions or suggestions, please just give us a call or us: Sandy , zimbles@aol.com or Barbara , bgold2@iag.net. We look forward to seeing you at our first meeting. Please join us. Barbara Goldstein Sandy Zimbler Young Blood by Ray Weiss...continued from page 1 I want to ensure the continued and long term viability of our synagogue. And to do that, we need to bring in new members and younger members. Morrissey said she has seen student enrollment increase in grades PK-5 by more than 400 this year as director of planning for Volusia County public schools. She said people of all faiths are moving back to the area, given the improving economy and more employment opportunities. The county is growing again. Jews are a small percentage of the population, Summer of Awesome! By Ray Weiss but still a percentage, she said. We need to better promote Congregation B'nai Torah and market our activities. We may be a small schul but we offer a lot to our congregants and to the community. One area she wants to publicize is the Sunday religious school, which Morrissey oversaw as its chairperson over many years. It s a big focus for me. I think it's important for families with children to raise their children with religion. Congregation B'nai Torah has helped Tom and I so much in instilling the values that are important to us and I want to ensure that others have the same opportunity. We have a lot of families with children, said Morrissey, a founding member of the temple. She said a June 7 th pool party is planned for the parents and prospective parents of religious school children. And an open house at the temple is scheduled for August 23rd at the temple. In addition, plans are under way for a biblically themed scavenger hunt at the zoo in Sanford on August 30th. Continued from page 1 It was a blast, Rabbi Kane said. It was time to resurrect it. But ultimately, Rabbi Kane said he was looking for ways to fill the usually quiet months of summer with a wide array of temple activities for those who remain in the area. We usually take the summer off, but so much of our congregation will be here most of those months, he said. So why not plan a lot of social, educational, and spiritual events? See page 4 for the Summer of Awesome Schedule

7 Page 7 Volume 23, Issue 6 JEWISH FEDERATION OF VOLUSIA AND FLAGLER COUNTIES 470 Andalusia Avenue - Ormond Beach, Florida (386) FAX. # (386) Dear Congregants: Under the auspices of the Endowment Fund of the Jewish Federation, adult education was held at Temple Beth-el on Sunday, May 3rd. It was a gorgeous afternoon and we were surprised that over 75 people came to hear Rabbi Gary Perras and Rabbi Barry Altman. Thank you Helen Farb who was the chairwoman of this successful event. We were very sorry that our next speaker Barry Rosen had to cancel his talk because of a serious health problem with his mother-in-law. She has since died. As soon as he arrived here, he had to go back. We hope to have a rescheduling of his talk. We praise Dr. Lenny Indianer for all his efforts in trying to make this an exciting event. We want to thank everyone who rode a car at the Auto Mall on the Federation's behalf. Over 150 cars were tested which netted the Federation approx. $3,000. We thank Cathy Webb and Micheline Welch for their help with this project. We raised over $2,000 for help with Nepal and together with the $2,500 that was allocated by our board, funds were sent to individual families in need. With the third earthquake happening, more people could benefit with additional funds. Our school supply project is now in full force. Last year we helped 7,000 local disadvantaged children in elementary, middle, and high school receive brand new backpacks complete with school supplies for their age group. In the 19 years we have been involved with this project we have helped over 80,000 kids. The retail cost is $80.00 but our wholesale cost is $25.00 The letters we receive from parents, teachers, principals, counselors and of course the students, attest to how important this project is. If you would like to help, send funds to School Supply Kits, c/o of the Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties and your donation will be acknowledged. Micheline Welch is working hard to get the PJ Library in full swing and we thank the Heaster Family for initiating the cost of this project. Every Jewish child from six months to eight years old will receive a free book addressed to them. We are so excited about this project. We received a mountain of good food from the Post Office Drive and we want to thank all the donors and the volunteerism of the Postal workers for bringing much needed food for the Jerry Doliner Food Bank. Our new board will be initiated at the annual meeting which will be announced in the near future. Hope everyone has a safe and happy summer. Dr. Howard Pranikoff, President Gloria Max, Executive Director

8 Page 8 Torah Times Men s Club News by Howard Silverstein A Dish of Ice Cream - In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10 year old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. How much is an ice cream sundae? 50 cents, replied the waitress. The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied a number of coins in it. How much is a dish of plain ice cream? Religious School News by Helen Farb We had our last Sunday School on May 3 rd. The younger children learned about three mothers in the Bible: Sarah, Rebecca, and Jocabed (the mother of Moses). We looked at pictures of them and discussed the husbands and children of each. The students were able to use puzzles to match the families. They made Mother's Day cards using their thumb and fingerprints for the flowers. Rabbi Kane invited the parents of the older children to hear each one present an aspect of Israel. These projects will be on display in the synagogue through the summer. There was a rousing game of kickball which the parents won. We all enjoyed hot dogs and chips at our outdoor picnic. Thanks also to Rosalie and Sydney for their help this year. We want you back next year! Thanks to all the parents and children of the Religious School for the beautiful he inquired. Some people were now waiting for a table and the waitress was a bit impatient. 35 cents, she said brusquely. The little boy again counted the coins. I ll have the plain ice cream, he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and departed. When the waitress came back, she began wiping down the table and then swallowed hard at what she saw. Calla Lilies and the gift certificate. I have really enjoyed working with all of you this year and look forward to next year. We had a very packed Tot Shabbat on Friday, May people came for stories and songs with the Rabbi. Thanks to Rosalie and Saralee Morrissey for the delicious pizza, salad, and ice cream sandwiches. Our next Tot Shabbat will be Friday, June 5 th. Hope to see you there. Have a wonderful summer! There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were 15 cents her tip. So with that being said as I step into my new role as the Men s Club President, and board member, I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the congregation of B nai Torah and listen to our family s suggestions to bring change and growth to our Mishpachah. With Much Appreciation, Howard

Welcome New Members: Lorna and Charlie Beck George and Anita Rimler Notes from Rabbi Kane As you can see from the Ray Weiss article in this issue, this will certainly be an exciting summer at Congregation B nai Torah. I am thrilled to share with you some more awesome news. This month, internationally acclaimed author and educator Dr. Rachel Dulin will be returning to CBT with two outstanding seminars. The Bible is at once a big book in terms of ideas and influence, yet it contains a relatively small number of words. When the Jewish people search for wisdom, where shall we look? Perhaps in Genesis where the Almighty tells Abraham to listen to his wife? Perhaps in Exodus where we find the Ten Commandments? Maybe we should look through the psalms? And what should we use as our definition of wisdom? Join Dr. Dulin for her fascinating presentation of " The Top Ten Pearls of Wisdom in the Bible." When I was eight years old, our religious school sent its Tzedakah money raised from dozens of pushkes to Israel. It was the year of the Six Day War. We were worried that our homeland, a struggling second world country, would falter, either through its enemies, or through its economic distress. Today Israel is clearly a first world country, with thriving schools, medical care, and economy. Does it still need our tzedakah boxes? How should we support it? How do we need it? Join Dr. Dulin for "Israel Needs Us and We Need Israel." These fascinating seminars will take place on Sunday, June 14th. Here is the schedule: 9:30- Doors open for coffee and orange juice 10:00-The Top Ten Pearls of Wisdom in the Bible 12:00- Lunch 1:00- Israel Needs Us and We Need Israel 3:00- Seminar Ends Please RSVP to the office at or to cbt@cfl.rr.com. Please let us know if you will be attending one or both of the seminars and whether or not you will be joining us for lunch.
