CHANUKAH STORY : Charles Moskowitz Every year between the end of Nov. and the end of Dec., Jewish people around the world celebrate the holiday of Chanukah, The Festival of Lights. Chanukah begins on the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev, but the starting date on the western calendar varies from year to year. The holiday celebrates events which took place over 2,300 years ago in the land of Judea, which is now Israel. Long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away... WHOOPS! Wrong story! Long ago in the land of Judea there was a Syrian king, Antiochus. The king ordered the Jewish people to reject their G-d, their religion, their customs and their beliefs and to worship the Greek gods. There were some who did as they were told, but many refused. One who refused was Judah Maccabee. Judah and his 4 brothers formed an army and chose as their name the word Maccabee, which means hammer. After 3 years of fighting, the Maccabees were finally successful in driving the Syrians out of Israel and reclaimed the Temple in Jerusalem. The Maccabees wanted to clean the building and to remove the hated Greek symbols and statues. On the 25th day of the month of Kislev, the job was finished and the Temple was rededicated. When Judah and his followers finished cleaning the Temple, they wanted to light the eternal light, known as the N er Tamid, which is present in every Jewish house of worship. Once lit, the oil lamp should never be extinguished. Only a tiny jug of oil was found with just enough for a single day. The oil lamp was filled and lit. Then a miracle occurred as the tiny amount of oil stayed lit not for one day, but for eight days. Jews celebrate Chanukah to mark the victory over the Syrians and the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple. The Festival of the Lights, Chanukah, lasts for eight days to commemorate the miracle of the oil. The word Chanukah means rededication. In America, families celebrate Chanukah at home. They give and receive gifts, decorate the house, entertain friends and family, eat special foods, and light the holiday menorah.

2 VOLUME 9, ISSUE 2 The Rabbi s Desk.. One of the greatest methods for teaching spiritual truth is demonstrated around this time of the year during the festival of lights, Chanukah. You might think that I am talking about using the lighting of the Chanukah lights as a great way to remember that, in ancient times, the oil lasted for 8 days in the holy Temple in Jerusalem instead of only for one. While this ritual is lovely, it is not exactly what I had in mind. CO-PRESIDENT'S Irv Abel & Charles Moskowitz This months message by: Charles Moskowitz Shalom: I hope everyone had a pleasant Thanksgiving holiday with their families and friends. Lea and I are so grateful for our bountiful gifts of 4 beautiful grandsons (2 born in the last two months!), for our family and friends especially our B nai Torah family. Life is good. We have a very busy schedule for December. On December 1 st, we will have our EARLY Family Service starting at 7:00PM where we will celebrate the birthdays of those children born in December and also Marty Wohl s birthday. On December 2 nd, there will be a Nosh and Learn with the Rabbi and on Sunday, December 3 rd, we will have our Annual Garage Sale from 9:00AM 2:00PM. Please contact Charlie Shalett or Bruce Barenbaum if you have any items for the sale. On December 8 th and 9 th, we will celebrate the 67 th anniversary of Charlie Shalett s Bar Mitzvah (his 80 th birthday). December is also the month of I think the most brilliantly conceived ritual is playing a game of dreidel. As you may recall the letters on the dreidel stand for a Hebrew phrase which, when translated, is a great miracle happened there. Children play the game for sweets and over time begin to associate the idea of God and miracles with sweetness. This concept is especially worthy because it brings a notion of God into contact with our sense of taste which is one of our most resonant memory makers. On this holiday of Chanukah may all of your memories be sweet and may all of God s thoughts of you be sweeter. Chanukah. We will have our Chanukah Dinner/Service on Friday, December 15 th at 6:00PM prepared by our famous Sisterhood Cooking Committee! Please call the office for reservations and send in your checks when you make your reservations ($12 for adults, $6 for children under 13). Please try to attend Friday night and Saturday morning services anytime you can. You really miss out on the warmth of our Congregation when you don t come. We also miss seeing you! In this season of Thanksgiving, Chanukah and the New Year, please remember all those who are not as lucky as you are. Tzedukah is a great mitzvah. Have a great Chanukah and a safe New Year. Shalom, Cantor Rhodes PAGE 2 I am pleased that this will be my first of many notes in our Torah Times. I will try to use my article as a way to report progress on the choir, Sunday school, and any issues of interest at JTS, Jewish music events and more. I will also include the next dates that I am scheduled to lead services. First, I want to let everyone know that I am hoping to start a Shabbat Choir for our congregation. Rehearsals will take place between December 24 and January 13 (most likely each Sunday night and Wednesday night). Initially, the choir will be scheduled to sing for only a few of the Friday night services (when I am present). After some feedback and consideration, we will decide whether to continue with it. Therefore, do not be afraid that you won t be able to commit if you re unable to make the rehearsals. Please me by December 15 at musicart23@hotmail.com if you are interested (so that I can plan out the exact times and repertoire). Speaking of our choir, I want to once again congratulate the High Holiday choir on their beautiful singing. They really made the service so much more meaningful, and I am thankful to have had such a hard working and talented congregational choir. I hope that all of you can participate in our Shabbat choir. Also, I want to congratulate the Terrific Trope Trio (Harvey Singer, Saralee Morrissey, and Ada Siegel) on their wonderful Torah chanting. Mazel Tov! Also, I am excited to announce the possible debut of a Chanukah song that Rabbi Kane and I wrote together. If timing and motivation work out, then the Sunday school may use our song in this year s Chanukah play. It has been a real pleasure teaching the kids Jewish songs at Sunday school with Temple Israel s Becky Cook. As for what is happening up here around the Seminary, one of the big issues of the month, or perhaps the decade, that is taking place (specifically for the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards) is the halachic ruling on homosexuality. The committee is scheduled to vote this month on each teshuvah presented. If a teshuvah receives at least six votes, then it will be accepted. The committee s 25 voting members will vote for the Conservative movement s allowance or continued prohibition of rabbis/cantors who are openly homosexuals. Many predict that it will ultimately be left up to each synagogue s rabbi (or community decider) to decide the policy in his or her shul. Arnold M. Eisen, the newly elected chancellor of JTS, will have a huge say on the fate of ordaining homosexuals if the teshuvah is passed. The law committee only decides whether such ordination can be allowed under Jewish law. However, it is the seminary s decision whether or not to put it into practice. As opposed to the recently resigned JTS chancellor Ismar Schorsch, Eisen is for the allowance. For more information on this topic, you may refer to the and/or www. rabbinicalassembly.org web site. Finally, I want to thank the congregation for choosing me as their student Cantor. It is important to me that I express my leadership, but it is also important to me that I maintain a humble attitude. As it is said in the Hineni for the High Holidays, I have come to stand and supplicate before You for Your people Israel, who have sent me, although I am unworthy and unqualified to do so. Even though I am leading the service, I am not performing it. We, together, are praying. Therefore, I encourage more people to sing and chant along with me during services. I have also written a letter on our web site stating my views and goals for the congregation. I look forward to seeing everyone when I return to lead services for the three Shabbatot between December 29 and January 14 and then again on January 26 for the Community Wide Shabbat. I d like to wish everyone a very happy Chanukah! Musically, Cantor Lance Rhodes

The new Memorial Board, donated by a congregant family, is expected to be delivered in early December. After receipt and installation we will have an unveiling ceremony to honor the donor family and the start of use of the Board. The new heating & air conditioning (HVAC) systems for both buildings will be funded via the Capital Campaign, and not from the operating budget. This work is being done to make our buildings more comfortable, temperature-wise, and eliminate the high noise level in the Sanctuary. We expect the new HVAC systems to be installed in the January April 2007 period. If you have not already done so, please consider a contribution, one-time or multi-year, to the Capital Campaign to help support this work. Please contact Bruce at or Harvey at if you would like to provide funds to purchase a specific item, or items, on our wish list, or have any questions or comments on committee matters. Do to space limitations this month we will be including the article that Luke Habernan wrote on the Kadima Convention which took place in Jacksonville, Florida on November, 10, 11, & 12. In the January Torah Times. All students and parents please watch for it. Luke put a lot of effort into it to give you a first hand look at how they spent their days. Charitable Giving Incentive for 2006 & 2007 The advantage to you, if you are age 70 ½ or older, is that you may contribute to Congregation B nai Torah (includes paying your dues, High Holiday pledge, Capital Campaign (Building Fund) pledge, new contribution, etc. amounts) from your IRA without paying any income tax on the withdrawn and contributed amount. This amount does not appear as taxable income on your income tax return! You have to make a minimum required distribution (withdrawal) from your IRA anyway, you might as well use it for giving to Congregation B nai Torah. Please call Harvey Singer ( ) and/or your tax counselor with any questions you may have, or to confirm the benefit to you.

DECEMBER 6th, Support the Sisterhood by attending the Joint Sisterhood Chanukah luncheon at Temple Beth Shalom in Palm Coast. DECEMBER 8th & 9th, Come & celebrate with Charlie Shalett as he celebrates the 67th anniversary of his Bar Mitzvah. Partake in the Oneg & Kiddush luncheon sponsored by the Shalett s. DECEMBER 15th, Enjoy the first night of Chanukah with friends and family by attending our congregational Shabbat dinner provided by the Sisterhood. See page 13 for more information. DECEMBER 17th, Rabbi & Valerie Kane s Chanukah Party at their home, everyone is invited. Chanukah is a happy time for many, and a not so happy time for others. As we start to plan our Chanukah dinners, or think what shall we buy the children and grandchildren for prizes when they play the dreidel game, what a warm and cozy feeling we get. However, there are many unfortunate families out there that are not thinking of extras for Chanukah, but just of survival on a daily basis. These people are not homeless or hungry out of their own choosing, and their children deserve a little happiness at this time of year. Why not buy a little less for ourselves, and a few things for the needy? The Jewish Federation would welcome a present (unwrapped) for a child or adult, and non-perishable foods. What better way to celebrate this wonderful family based holiday than by doing a Mitzvah, a truly good deed? Bring your items to the office or Temple and we will bring them to the Federation

7 VOLUME 9, ISSUE 2 PAGE 7 JEWISH FEDERATION OF VOLUSIA AND FLAGLER COUNTIES 470 Andalusia Avenue - Ormond Beach, Florida (386) FAX. # (386) Dear B Nai Torah Congregants: Todah Rabah! Lea Moskowitz did a yeoman s job for the Federation. She and her committee consisting of Ada Siegel, Lynn Hartman, Jo Ann Singer and Caryl Shalett did a great job at the annual DBCC international cultural festival. Lea made tons of kuegel as did Lois Liebman and with all the other foods, students and faculty members enjoyed the Jewish Food. We have been involved with this festival for many years. We also thank Marilyn Freedman for all her efforts in providing the delicious refreshments for the 1st of the 4 lecture series sponsored by the Endowment Committee of the Jewish Federation at the Museum of Arts & Sciences. Professor Mitchell Hart gave us interesting facts about early Zionism. The other lectures will be held on Dec. 10, Jan. 28 and March 25. We have sponsored and co sponsored many activities. At Temple Israel, we had a former Palestinian terrorist speak. He was absolutely terrific and gave everyone a warning that we must stop these radical Islamists. The Major Gifts Dinner was held at LPGA. Since this was before the election, the speaker, Jay Footlik spoke a lot about the political situation and what he felt would happen. Great evening. Kristallnacht at Temple Beth-el was very interesting. Professor Ballenger showed a film called Night and Fog. This was a film that portrayed the horrors of the holocaust and showed how inhumane the Nazis and their conspirators were. After the film, he engaged everyone in a dialogue. On November 17, at Temple Beth-el, a new exhibit by the Czech students of Prague on nineteen panels, showed how Jews disappeared during the time of the Holocaust. That same evening, the Fire Truck that was purchased by the donors of the Emergency Israel Campaign and that will be sent to Kiryat Shemona, the northern city that sustained the most bombing during the last Lebanese war was brought to our city. The Fire Truck was displayed at your Temple from Fri., November 24, to Tue. November 28. On December 3 rd, at Temple Beth El at 7:00 p.m. a film will be shown that will make you more aware of how the extremists are infiltrating the United States. Everyone should come and see the film. We gave out over 150 baskets including a Turkey for Thanksgiving. We thank the Heaster family for providing pumpkin pies. We will have our Chanukah party for the Seniors on December 13 th at 11 a.m. at Indigo Banquet Hall. Gifts will be given to seniors from nursing and assisted living facilities and folks who are in their 80 s. For some of these seniors, this will be the only Chanukah party that they will go to. We are also going to purchase Chanukah presents for our disadvantaged Jewish children. Please answer our Chanukah appeal. Israel is still in dire need. Our campaign under the direction of Rona Fingold and Dr. Jim Solomon is running smoothly. If you haven t pledged yet, please call Gloria at and give us your pledge. Because of your donations, we make a difference in many people s lives. 8 VOLUME 9, ISSUE 2 PAGE 8 LIBRARY NOTES: : Jean Leonard You are invited to visit our library room in the office building to see a new bookcase as you enter and turn right. This bookcase has been set up to house our CHILDREN'S COLLEC- TION. During the past several years many children's books have been donated, and were included with the adult books in the collection. With Sandy Zimbler's suggestions and assistance, a list of subject headings was made and now you will find the books separated under these headings to make it easier to find special holiday and religious books. Some examples of these subjects are Bible, Customs, Ethics, Folklore, God, History, Holidays, Picture Books (includes many subjects), Traditions, etc. The books can be taken out by signing the book card found in either the front or back book cover. For assistance, please ask Vicki and be sure to leave the signed card in the yellow circulation tray on top of the cabinet on the opposite side. There are still many books to be processed that will be added to the collection. Special thanks to Harvey Singer for procuring and setting up the bookcase, to Sandy Zimbler for working on the books, to Vicki for making the lovely shelf labels and to the many folks contributing books that enhanced their children's reading and now is available for congregant's children, grandchildren and the Hebrew School teachers and students and parents. If you were fortunate to see the movie "One Night with the King", you might be interested in the novel the movie was based on. Several years ago, Paula Barenbaum advised me that she was donating a book to our library called Hadassah: One Night With the King. Tommy Tenney. She also enthusiastically advised me to read it. It was a wonderfully, detailed, fictionalized story of our holiday Purim. When I next saw her, I thanked her for the book and recommending it. It was catalogued and placed in our fiction section, Fic/Ten under the author's last name. Several weeks ago, I received an excited call from Paula telling me about the movie "One Night With the King" playing at a local theatre. She also recommended seeing it. It was at the theatre for 3 weeks and both Paula and I have advised many of our friends to see the movie. The News-Journal had a review of the movie in it's November 4, 2006 Faith section. This article has been cut out and can be found in a back pocket of the book for the borrower to also read. The book explains more fully about the nature of the King Xerxes, Queen Esther, and the historical events in Iran at that time. The book can also be found in many of the Public Libraries in our area. A must to read! A happy Chanukah to all! Jean Leonard. MEMBERS NEWS AND NOTES It is my pleasure to introduce our newest member. Please welcome her and add her to your year book.
