2 V O LUM E 14, I S S UE 2 The Desk of Rabbi S. David Kane... PAGE 2 This week as we begin the High Holiday season Jews around the world are flocking to synagogues. The question that Rabbis ask is: Why do they come? Some say, it s to hear the special melodies that the leaders of the service chant. Some say, it is out of respect for a tradition that they don t closely observe, but don t want to disregard all together. Other says, that Jews come to the High Holiday service to see other Jews, to check in. What is interesting to me is that none of the respondents that answered the question said that Jews come to High Holiday services to pray. Does it mean that today s Jewish Americans are too sophisticated to pray, or does it mean that the occasions that they use for prayer does not take place in the synagogue. In fact, the larger issue might be what exactly is a Jewish prayer? Is it better to offer it in Hebrew? Should we be asking? Praising? Something else? The Hebrew word for to pray translates to examine one s self. This concept is difficult because we are taught as small children to pray to our father in heaven and ask for things or show gratitude. In fact, the Jewish tradition of prayer compels us as responsible Jews to communicate with God in a totally different way. Please join us for Rosh Hashanah Services to explore how our tradition wants us to talk to God. A Sweet New Year from Valerie & Me Message from the President PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Now that summer has drawn to a close and the weather seems to be a bit cooler, it s time for our High Holidays to begin. We are still sprucing up the grounds for the holidays and with a few more days to go, hope to finish the task. A special thank you goes to Jerry Epstein for painting the lines on our paved parking lot. Now we can see where our cars really belong. We would like to thank Rose Grace and Stephen This month s message by: Co-President - Norm Feldman Halpern for hosting a beautiful Slichot Service led by Rabbi Kane this past week. The movie, Praying with Lior, was quite moving. If you haven t seen it, put it on your list as a must see. The nosh afterward was tasty, especially the coconut bars (my personal favorite). I must get the recipe. A few dates to mark on your calendars: Kol Nidre on October 7 th, Yom Kippur on October 8 th followed by the annual Break the Fast, building the Sukkah on October 9 th, Shemini Atzert, and Simchat Torah October 20th the Champagne and Chocolate Art Festival on October 22 nd, the Daytona Toyota Holiday Classic Tournament on November 20 th, and the Rick Michel Sinatra, Martin and Davis Show on Saturday, January 7, Roberta and I wish all our congregants and their families a very Happy, Healthy New Year. 6 V O LUM E 14, I S S UE 2 PAGE 6 SISTERHOOD NEWS : Barbara Ringle L Shana Tova. We hope everyone has a healthy and happy New Year. The Temple is an important part of all of our lives and the Sisterhood is pleased to be a vital part of our congregational family. It is hard for us to believe that it is already time for the High Holidays and that means that the Sisterhood will be very busy providing food for the Onegs, Break-the-Fast dinner and other special events. We are looking forward to continuing the proud tradition of service and fellowship that have become trademarks of the Sisterhood. Of course, your help would be greatly appreciated. The Kitchen Angels need volunteers so all of the work doesn t fall on just a few people. Please call Lea if you able to help. We also still need donations and volunteers for the Break the Fast dinner following Yom Kippur Services. The paid-up member brunch held on September 25 th was great fun. The turnout was good, the food was excellent, and the remarks provided by Valerie Kane, titled Aging Gracefully, were both informative and practical. Of course, pulling off a large event cannot be accomplished without the help of many people. We would like to especially thank Norm Feldman, Lynn Hartman, Lois Liebman, Rita Pender, Barbara and Harvey Singer, Caryl Shalett who all put in extra time and effort helping to set up and prepare the brunch. Carin Rothberg, Carol Hyman, and Melanie Dolan from the program committee are planning more informative presentations that should be fun additions to our regular meetings. Sema Friedman reports that she has a great evening planned for October 22 nd. The Chocolate and Champagne Extravaganza will pair chocolate cakes, pies, and desserts with both champagne and an art sale. She needs donations of chocolate items (either homemade or purchased). Sounds like we will be able to satisfy our sweet tooth, champagne palate, and taste for fine art all in one evening. The Sisterhood wants to add our welcome to the new members of the Congregation and hope that any of the new women will consider joining us Shalom, Barbara Ringle & Roberta Feldman Co-presidents RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS: Co-Chair Sue Goldberg The younger children started the year off with an early service & Shabbat dinner of spaghetti, salad & more. Thank you Rabbi & Valerie for preparing what the kids said was "a yummy dinner!" We have a few younger children this year and look forward to a monthly preschool/kindergarten Friday evening service. The Sunday School students held their 2nd annual Car Wash for Hadassah on Sunday,Sept 25th. Thank you to Ken Nussbaum, Harvey Singer & Norm Feldman for moving the vehicles back & forth. Thank you to our teens, Sara Freedman & Tommy Morrissey for volunteering their time to assist the students. Thank you to Julie Liebman for her time & effort helping wash the cars and being the official school photographer. While the older students worked outside the younger students were inside with Mrs. Farb learning about Rosh Hashanah, & noshing on apples, honey & challah. Hebrew High School is underway under the guidance of Charlie Moskowitz with his challenging and always current curriculum. If you have a high school student interested in joining the monthly program please call the temple office. On behalf of myself, Julie Liebman & the entire Religious School we wish the CBT Family a very Happy & Healthy New Year! Many thanks to them for their hospitality. Though this report is written before Rosh Hashanah, our expectation is that we will have had our traditional and very uplifting Rosh Hashanah services by the time you read this. Those people, usually about 50 in number, who attended our Taschlich service on the shore of the Halifax River took part in the casting of our sins on the waters. Yom Kippur is quickly upcoming on Shabbat, Friday evening, October 7 th, and Saturday, October 8 th (with Yizkor) to complete our High Holiday observance. For your information, our High Holiday ad in the News-Journal was in their Local section on Friday, September 23 rd, and Sunday, September 25 th. We also had, or will have, an Ormond Beach Police Officer and car presence on our grounds during our 3 peak attendance services 1 st day of Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidre, and Yom Kippur day for our security. We also had an Ormond Beach police car present on Erev Rosh Hashanah and the 2 nd day of Rosh Hashanah (courtesy of Jerry Epstein). We have child care available during the High Holidays. This is being done in our Office/School building. Hopefully this will be helpful for families with young children. Coming quickly after the High Holidays is Sukkot. We will be building and decorating our Sukkah on Sunday, October 9 th, starting at 10 am. Please come and help build the Sukkah. During Sukkot we will be having Kiddush in the Sukkah. The 1 st & 2 nd days of Sukkot are Thursday & Friday, October 13 th & 14 th ; and the 7 th & 8 th days are Thursday & Friday, October 20 th & 21 st (with Yizkor). 10 VO LUM E 14, IS SUE 2 PAGE 10 JEWISH FEDERATION OF VOLUSIA AND FLAGLER COUNTIES 470 Andalusia Avenue - Ormond Beach, Florida (386) FAX. # (386) Dear Friends: The Federation welcomes our new President, Dr. Aron Newfield. We all wish him much success in this new endeavor. On behalf of myself and my husband Ray, I want to wish all of you a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year filled with peace shalom. These past few months have been quite difficult. My husband, Ray, had a ruptured baker s cyst and he has been unable to work for almost 7 weeks. We were so fortunate to get excellent workers to come and take over his position. He still came in every day and it is hard for him not to do the work but he feels fortunate that it wasn't something more dreadful. One worker I must compliment is Doug Powell who comes in every day at 7:50 a.m. and leaves at about 4:00 p.m. He has been a godsend to the food pantry. We would have had to close if it wasn't for these workers: Doug Powell, Luke, George Gosselin, Gary Dean, Jeff Max, and Howard Jacobsen. Marta Weisberg continues to be our angel by shopping around to different grocery stores to get the best prices for us. Last week she brought in 187 cases of food. We recently had a story about our Jerry Doliner Food Bank in the paper and this kind of publicity always helps. We are very proud that as of this date, the food pantry has been operating with funds mostly from the community at large and we haven t had to touch our campaign funds. To date we have helped over 13,500 people this year receive a minimum of a week s worth of food including meat or chicken, cereal and juice and of course toilet paper. We have already spent over $100,000 this year To commemorate the 9-11 tragedy, the News Journal and Hometown News repeated the story of how this Federation helped 20 needy families with cash gifts of $2,500. We were one of the first to respond. We have done this with all the national tragedies. 100% of funds collected go to needy people who have been hurt by these tragedies. The victims of fires in Volusia & Flagler Counties, the hurricanes in Volusia & Flagler Counties, in Alabama, Katrinia Haiti-Japan, etc. We certainly don t neglect our Jewish people in need. We continue to help them with mostly utility bills and food and during the Rosh Hashanah, Chanukah and Passover we make certain that they have food that is in the tradition of the respective holiday. We also have 3 holiday luncheons complete with entertainment and the respective traditions. For some of the seniors, these gatherings are the only time they receive some semblance of the holidays. We had a great lunch at Indigo Banquet Center (they are under new management by Mango Sun) and I must thank Jonathan Rotstein for again paying part of the expense of these luncheons. I also want to thank all the donors, volunteers, and entertainers (special guests were Joe & Lynne Goldovitz) who made this a very special luncheon. For the very first time we had 4 Rabbis in attendance. So many of the elderly were thrilled that the Rabbis came around to the tables and schmoozed with them. Rabbi Barry Altman blew the shofar so long that we wondered how he could have managed this. Thank you to everyone who purchased food, toilet paper and gave funds for the holidays. We thank Dr. Howard Pranikoff who while he was in Israel went to see the new bomb shelter, (the safe room) that we purchased for 150 kids. He was treated royally. I got a call last week from the CEO and he told us that even though the media hasn t informed the public that these southern cities in Israel are being inundated with missiles, he is so thankful that there is a bomb shelter in Nitivot and in Sderot that the Federation purchased. Now 150 children in each city have a safe room to go to. We should all be proud that this little Federation has purchased 2 responder fire trucks and two bomb shelters. The plaques in each purchase states. "Given by the donors of the Jewish Federation of Volusia & Flagler Counties, USA, Florida because they cared." These are perilous times, especially for Israel and we must continue to support our brothers and sisters there and the local people here who are hurting. Thank you Congregation B Nai Torah headed by Rabbi Steven David Kane for again sponsoring the Jerry Doliner Walk-A-Thon. Over 41 people were participants. Thank you to all the workers who helped make the Walk-A-Thon a success and thank you to Congregation B Nai Torah for the delicious hot dogs, drinks, chips and the fabulous watermelon for dessert. This Federation might be small but we make a huge difference to so many people. Dr. Aron Newfield President Gloria Max Executive Director
