2 VO LUM E 13, IS SUE 9 Notes from Rabbi S. David Kane Every congregation tries to serve the greater good through a variety of ways. Our congregation prides itself on friendly services, excellent educational opportunities and delicious food to compliment our offerings. Of course in order to have each one of these desirable experiences, there are certain requirements. Our friendly services are accomplished in our lovely building through the generosity of our dues paying members and those who support our fund raisers. Our adult educational opportunities are funded by the Rabbi s Discretionary Fund and the people who donate to it. Our fantastic food is provided by the amazing members of our Sisterhood and those who sponsor their delicious efforts. What a fantastic year we have had. Attendance at services has been, for the most part excellent. Our lunch and learn series has been wildly popular and of course, all of the meals we have enjoyed from the Sisterhood s skills have been very much appreciated. This year however, we have experienced the unexpected. Some of our friends have experienced financial hardship and have been unable to donate as much as they have in the past. Our septic system unexpectedly failed and we had to purchase a new one. The Sisterhood s amazing kitchen lost a freezer, an oven, and water cooler. As you can imagine, unexpected drops in income or additional expenses strain the ability to provide all of the wonderful things that our community enjoys. The month of May provides all of us with the opportunity to support our favorite congregational activity. Whether we are able to replace a little bit of the money spent on the septic system, underwrite some of the speakers fees for the lunch and learn, or donate to the Sisterhood s appliance fund, the good that we do will immediately benefit our congrega- tional family. It is unusual for a Rabbi to write about the financial challenges involved in maintaining a wonderful religious institution. It is marvelous that our leadership has been able to scramble to accomplish the funding for so many excellent and sometimes unexpected items. Thank you to everyone who has so far donated. I m hoping that all of us can pick our favorite B nai Torah fund, and donate a little bit extra this month. The challenge created by our unexpected expenses will be met by all of us together. Please mark your check general, speakers, or kitchen. Rabbi Kane PAGE 2 Message from the Co- President: Charlie Moskowitz What a month! We had a great Seder, catered by the Sisterhood and Amira s, Passover services, a beautification project of our Temple grounds and many other activities that kept us busy. Please mark your calendars for our Annual Meeting on Sunday, May 15, 2011 at 10:00 AM. Please make every effort to attend this important meeting. We will be electing officers, Board of Directors, discussing the budget for next year and taking up any business that needs to come before the congregation for a vote. Another reminder - our fiscal year is coming to an end in May. If you have any outstanding dues, High Holiday pledges, cards or other obligations, please make sure they are paid up by the annual meeting so you can exercise your right to vote. Have a great rest of the year and hope to see you at services! Charles Moskowitz, Co President CBT Beautification Activity Many thanks to the people who took part in the Congregation B nai Torah property beautification activity on Sunday, April 24 th Gerry Epstein, Sema Friedman & Charlie Cameron, Carol Hyman, Rabbi & Valerie Kane, Allan & Adam Liebman, Ed Rothberg, Justin Selis, Barbara & Harvey Singer, Allan & Demetria Stone, and Ray & Brian Weiss. We weeded, trimmed, raked leaves, removed debris and dead plants, swept, planted, and generally cleaned up the property primarily around our two buildings. The results were a noticeable improvement in the appearance of our property. What a mitzvah done by these people!

6 VO LUM E 13, IS SUE 9 LIBRARY NOTES: Vicki Goldberg PAGE 6 Have you ever wondered how our wonderful library was born? Here is the true story. Beverly and Dr. Marvin Lewis donated 80 books to B nai Torah. With these books we began to establish the library. Jean Leonard, who was a Librarian for many years, donated many hours processing the books in the proper manner of a library. A book card and book pocket on the front first page and a spine label with the author s last name. This enabled us to keep the books in alphabetical order for easy location. A circulation tray for the cards for you to fill out is on a little table in the library. We allow you a three week period to enjoy the book. Please return the book to the basket provided. Since Jean Leonard has not been able to handle the very intricate duties of a Librarian we were in dire need of help. We sent out the call and our phone never rang. Until a week ago when I received that wonderful call from Bobbie Gordon. She began by asking are you still looking for help with the Library? Of course we were. That was all it took. Bobbie has volunteered to come in on Tuesday and Thursdays and get the library back in shape. Our thanks go out to Bobbie and also Jean who establish our library and took care of it for many years. Now you know the whole story. We hope you will come in and enjoy the great selection of books we have to offer. 7 VO LU M E 13, IS SU E 9 PAGE 7 JEWISH FEDERATION OF VOLUSIA AND FLAGLER COUNTIES 470 Andalusia Avenue - Ormond Beach, Florida (386) FAX. # (386) Dear Congregants: March and April were busy months for the Federation. We had functions that were all very successful. We want to thank Cantor Zev Sonnenstein for spearheading the afternoon concert which supported the Jerry Doliner Food Bank and the Backpack Project. He did a yeoman s job. Besides the Cantor, we had the Greatest Moments in Time Singers, the Jazz Band from Seabreeze High School, and Jenn Cleary entertaining the audience. Marilyn Freedman from the Federation s Board went shopping for the Federation and everyone there enjoyed the wonderful goodies. Thank you to Therese, who on her day off came, and took reservations for this concert. Cantor Zev, Malka and Rabbi Altman promoted the event and the food bank and the backpack project were grateful recipients. Whoever didn t attend missed the last segment of the program that had Cantor and the Executive Director doing a special dance. Kudos to Lynne Ritter and her committee for having the unusual chocolate Passover Seder for the Women s Division of the Jewish Federation. In order to be invited a family pledge of $500 to the Federation s campaign was the requirement. It was absolutely magnificent. The food was delicious and the desserts were divine. It was a special treat for the Executive Director to come as a guest and enjoy the chocolate wine and all the goodies. Ellen Rabin s chocolate haggadah was quite electric and everyone took part in reading from this special addition. Karen Allen for conducting the service. We thank the entertainers: The Spruce Creek Jazz Combo, Harry Burney, and the Greatest Moments in Time Singers and all the volunteers who made this one special Holiday Luncheon. A special thank you to Jonathan Rotstein for his involvement in this luncheon. There was standing room only for the special presentation of the movie Defiance. Unfortunately, we only have 5 Holocaust survivors left and it was very moving to see them light their candles in memory of the 6 million who perished. Ruth Bielski, the daughter of the main hero Tuva Bielsky and Miriam Taub, the Holocaust Survivor who was saved by the Bielski family, embraced each other and Miriam finally got to thank the Bielski family for saving her life. To hear both of these women speak was an inspiration. The movie was very powerful. Thanks go to Marilyn Freedman for purchasing the refreshments and setting up the tables for the Federation and Nancy Sharff for bringing the popcorn donated by Prosperity Bank. This was an evening to remember. The Senior Pre-Passover Seder was enjoyed by all. We thank Rabbi Amy Mayer and Rabbi MEMBERS NEWS AND NOTES Extra, Extra, read all about it. Lea & Charlie Moskowitz and Carin & Ed Rothberg, returned from their cruise to the Western Caribbean. Hope they share some of their adventures with us. Because of the rising cost of food and gas, we are seeing a record number of people coming for food. We are in desperate need of large paper bags and donations to the Jerry Doliner Food Bank. We are now spending over $11,000 a month for food besides the in kind donations. It is a mitzvah to help people in need. Can you believe that we helped 97 Jewish families for Passover. Thank you to all who have supported the Jewish Federation s worthy causes and we thank the Jewish Veterans for sending a check every month. Marian Kohen, Gloria Max, President Executive Director along with Carol Hyman and Jeannie Singer will be cruising the Amazon River in May. WANT TO BE A REPORTER? 8 VO LUM E 13, IS SUE 9 PAGE 8 RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS: Sue Goldberg Our children have been busy learning how the Torah relates to our justice system, cooking in the kitchen, and hosting a model seder and more!!! Scott Selis spent over an hour with the Sunday School students discussing the relationship between the Torah and many of today s laws. They started out by looking at the commandment "Thou shalt not kill." He asked what does that mean? Does it mean that we shouldn't kill people, animals, insects and/or plants? Once the kids decided that the commandment was talking about killing people, he asked whether it's ever okay to kill someone else. The response he received was great. The kids had a discussion about how to interpret the rule. Eventually, all of the kids concluded that we break G-d's law and human law if we kill, unless the killing is in war, self-defense or defense of another. Then they looked at how illegal killing is treated in law and the Torah. The kids recognized that killing in cold blood with planning deserved the highest punishment. Killing for emotions or by accident, though, the children recognized, should be treated differently. Scott explained that is exactly how the law and the Torah treat punishment for killing and explained that this is not an accident. Many other things were also discussed such as adultery, stealing, etc., all with similar focus. The session was concluded by letting the children "be the judge" to various scenarios. The children found the discussion interesting and thought provoking. On April 2nd the children were visited in Religious School by Sgt. Harvey Morse of the Holly Hill Police Department. Sgt. Morse spoke to the children about bravery and the dangers of being a police officer. He even let the children try on his bulletproof vest and showed them the different instruments used for his work. If you walked into the religious school building on April 9th, you would have thought you were in Bubbie s kitchen! Ken Nussbaum made matzo ball soup with the kids, Allan Liebman taught them how to make homemade horseradish, and Helen Farb covered the charoses! Each student took a sample home of all three delicious items to share with his or her family. Thank you very much to our volunteers! Our children appreciate your time. Todah Rabah to Rabbi Kane and Valerie for the delicious Pesach food for the model Seder! The children participated in the ser- vice with many fun Pesach tunes to songs like Frere Jacques (Seder Plate), Singing in the Rain (Sick of the Murrain), That's Amore (That's a Matzah), I've Been Working on the Railroad (Pharaoh Doesn't Pay), and the favorite of all, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (Super Kosher Manishewitz, Exodus & Moses). As you can tell from the name and tunes it was lots of fun and thank you to Julie Liebman for her wonderful photography skills. Please contact the synagogue office if you have children you want to enroll in Sunday School for the monthly preschool/kindergarten class as well as other ages so that plans and a calendar can be set over the summer. The children are collecting everyones Tzedakah boxes for presentation to Hadassah and the trees and water for Israel program. Please turn yours in by Wednesday, May 11th or send a check for the amount. Thank you, Sue Goldberg & Julie Liebman The Jewish War Veterans of Volusia/Flagler Counties, Post #300 are proud to be the oldest veterans service organization in the U.S. We the members, invite all veterans and their wives to our monthly Breakfast Meeting. We provide aid to all veterans, regardless of race or religion. For further information, contact Stan Kates (386) or Irv Hoffman (386)
