1 Friday Services start at 8:00 PM Tu B'Shevat Saturday Services start at 10:30 AM January, 2013 A Reform Congregation Volume 8, Issue 5 FROM THE RABBI Many years ago, when I lived on Long Island in New York, there was a synagogue which observant Jews in the community critically and disparagingly referred to as "Our Perpetual Lady of Simchas." A "simcha" is a joyous occasion. It was a very large, beautifully-decorated synagogue with a magnificent sanctuary which had fixed pews. Almost every Saturday morning, there was a Bar or Bat Mitzvah and on some Saturday mornings there were doubles and triples. I remember one Saturday morning when I was invited to attend a Bar Mitzvah service scheduled to begin at 11:00 A.M. I arrived at 10:40 A.M. and had to wait in the lobby outside the sanctuary because there was an earlier Bar Mitzvah service beginning at 9:00 A.M. which had not yet concluded. And at these Bar and Bat Mitzvah services, the sanctuary was usually packed. At many Friday evening services throughout the year, there were baby-namings, sometimes two or three on the same evening. And at these services, there usually were a large number of people in attendance. The synagogue had a membership of about 650 households and the dues per household came to several thousand dollars per year. However, when there was no Bar or Bat Mitzvah on a Saturday morning, there often were fewer than ten congregants in attendance. And when there were no baby-namings at a Friday evening service, there usually were congregants in attendance. There was another synagogue in the community which was housed in a converted one family house. The sanctuary was in the basement and had movable chairs. It wasn't a very impressive-looking building. There weren't too many Bar or Bat Mitzvahs and not too many baby-namings. But every Friday evening and Saturday morning, the building was packed with congregants who attended services week after week on a regular basis. The synagogue did not charge membership dues, but survived on the voluntary contributions of its congregants. So which of these two synagogues would you classify as being more successful? Rabbi David Weissman Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

9 9 Sisterhood News The Annual Chanukah Dinner took place on Tuesday, December 11th at Angelo's Steak & Pizza. Twenty-three members enjoyed a delicious Italian meal, thanks to the efforts of Sheila Honer and Cookie Brenner. Our next meeting will be on Monday, January 7th at 7:15 p.m. We will use that time to make final arrangements for our participation in the 4th Annual Coastal Samaritan Soup Cook Off. The Soup Cook Off takes place on Sunday, January 13th from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in North Myrtle Beach on Hwy 17 N (next to Home Depot). Tickets are only $7 each for a taste of two dozen or more delicious soups, along with an opportunity to vote for your favorite one (matzoh ball soup). Please make every effort to attend. Not only is it for a good cause, but the Sisterhood has to uphold its reputation as the First place winner in last year's competition. Mary Weissman BROTHERHOOD UPDATE Another great brotherhood meeting was held at the Golden Corral in North Myrtle Beach. At our meeting, we discussed several things, one of which was to sponsor one of the available windows in our temple building. The announcement was made at our Hanukkah party. We are trying different places and times until we find what is good for the membership to meet. Our next meeting will be on January 7 th at 6:00 pm. It will be held at Friendly s Restaurant. Friendly s is located at 48 th Ave and business 17. The announcement for the super bowl party is below. Please RSVP if you are attending so we can save the right number of seats. The room is large enough for the women to play cards or mahjong. See you at the January meeting. Phil Honer President
