January 2014 Tevet-Shevat 5774 Volume 22, Issue 5 The Torah Times Jewish War Veterans by Ray Weiss Together we honor G-d and Torah, Promote Spiritual Growth, and Strengthen Our Community Special Points of Interest: CBT Photo Gallery pg 2 The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars are on the front lines of charitable organizations made up of former military men and women. But on a smaller scale, the Jewish War Veterans do similar work in assisting the needy, and Congregation B nai Torah s Charlie Shalett has been a big part of the local chapter for about eight years. Besides the good deeds, he said the organization offers the mostly older veterans a place to meet and socialize. I enjoy raising enough money to help vets in need, no matter if it s from World War II, Korea, Vietnam or Iraq. Our main goal is to help vets and vet families who are hungry, said Shalett, an 87-yearold Navy veteran who served in World War II. We also support the (veteran s nursing home in Daytona Beach) with TVs, benches and barbecues. Part of that financial backing for the Jewish War Veterans, where Shalett is a past commander, comes from the poker tournaments run by Congregation B nai Torah. Stan Kates of Palm Coast runs the day-to-day operation of the area chapter of the Jewish War Veterans that currently boasts about 50 members, most of whom are retirees. Continued on pg 8... But a life of leisure, simply fishing and golfing, wasn t part of his postemployment dream. As they say, you can take the rabbi out of a temple, but you can t take the temple out of a rabbi, as congregants around B nai Torah have come to know and appreciate. Rabbi Shapiro has become more than just a welcome face. He often has stepped in to lead services when Rabbi Kane is out of town, which will be the case January 10th and 11th. I like the informality and comfort level at services, said Rabbi Shapiro of what attracted him to join Congregation B nai Torah. Continued on 6... 3 Page 3 Volume 22, Issue 5 Notes from Rabbi David S. Kane While much of the Western world is celebrating January 1st as a new year, we of the Jewish faith have a special holiday this month, Tu B'shevat, the New Year of the Trees. This is one of several New Years in the Jewish calendar, including Rosh Hashanah in the fall and the Biblical Spring New Year. Why are there so many times marked as a "New Year" in the Jewish tradition? Was it the result of ancient competing calendar tribes? Certainly not! While we use the Rosh Hashanah date to begin our annual urgency about self improvement and the ancients used the spring date to mark the beginning of the agricultural cycle, Tu B'shevat, in the middle of winter, has an altogether different relevant message. The spring holidays involve planting seeds and fall festivals involve gratitude for harvest (and life). This winter festival acknowledges more than our ability to harness growth technology. It emphasizes our role as caretakers of the natural world. In the book of Genesis, God gave the natural world to humanity and in subsequent Biblical texts we were Message from the Co -Pres idents : Dr. Charles Stein & Bari Amols Dear Congregants: 2013 has been a great year for CBT and we thank each of you for helping to make our congregation such a success. You help us accomplish our many wonderful goals including charitable donations to the community, monetarily, and through volunteerism. We continue to offer a venue for meaningful religious experiences via regular Shabbat services on Fridays and Saturdays as well as educational programs and youth activities. We are clarifying policy for our congregation and establishing guidelines that apply to everyone thus eliminating apparent bias and the potential for perceived favoritism. One such recent policy passed by your board outlines the use of rabbinical services for non-members of CBT. This would include life cycle events such as weddings, baby namings, b nai mitzvot, and the like. As great as 2013 has been, the New Year should be even better. Many activities are planned and a calendar of events will soon be available. So, as I often mention, our continued success depends on each of you participating in our events and services and continue to enjoy the fellowship that the CBT family provides. Bari and I wish each of you a healthy, prosperous, and happy given laws regarding the protection of nature, even during times of war. In modern times, as technology and population growth have created the side effect of pollution, our faith demands the moral imperative of devoting resources to renewing the natural world. It is not enough to set aside corporate profits to feed the hungry or shelter the homeless, although those are worthy goals. As a society, we must insist that those profits not result from a process which irreversibly harms our environment. And so we set aside this holiday in the winter, to plant, in these southern climates, new growth which will replace the growth which our expanded civilization has destroyed, to remind us of our responsibilities as the caretakers of God s Creation. Ritual Committee Report by Debra Rodensky This has been an exciting month for CBT. Gary Stanley formally converted to Judaism and has taken the Hebrew name of Gavriel Eitan ben Avraham v'sarah. We all so very proud to have Gary as a member. Mazel Tov, Gary! We also celebrated the baby naming of Marlee Lael Fromson. Her greatgrandfather, Jack Rotstein looked on as little Marlee's foot touched the Torah. Mazel Tov! With Chanukah so early this year, we have no more holidays until Tu B'Shevat on January 16th. This "New Year for Trees" is celebrated both by planting trees and eating fruit.

Page 6 The Torah Times SISTERHOOD NEWS: Co-President Sue Abel Happy 2014! Where did 2013 go?? Time has just flown by and your CBT Sisterhood has had an excellent year. With the arrival of 2014 we aim to continue Sisterhood s good work on behalf of Congregation B nai Torah. Late November and early December were very busy times for Sisterhood s catering department with 3 events, 3 days in a row. Beginning with November 30 th there was a baby naming and kiddush for Dr. Jack Rotstein s greatgranddaughter, followed the next evening by the Latkes and Lights celebration where we served latkes (what else?) and other goodies. On December 2 nd our Sisterhood was the host for the annual Joint Sisterhood Chanukah Luncheon. Many women from other temple sisterhoods in the area attended the festive event. Participants were asked to bring their menorahs to the luncheon where they were all lit simultaneously. The glow in the room was beautiful, creating the perfect backdrop for the most interesting program presented by Evelyn Ladau. Evelyn shared a personal menorah story followed by attendees sharing interesting stories about their menorahs. Our Kitchen Angels, under the very capable leadership of executive chef Lea Moskowitz and her multi-talented crew, served a delicious lunch of stuffed cabbage, salad, potato latkes, and desserts. The meal was met with rave reviews and, in the days following the event, we heard numerous compliments. It will certainly be a tough act to follow!! We offer our sincere thanks, a BIG todah rabah, to all who worked so hard to make this luncheon a very special and successful event. Your presidents have been busy with meetings to plan events for Keep an eye on this Sisterhood News column in each issue of the Torah Times for announcements of upcoming events. Here are some dates to put on your calendars for January and February: January 14, 2014 Sisterhood Board Meeting, 7:00PM. January 20, 2014 Sisterhood s Mah Jongg Tournament at CBT (we need card tables and Mah Jongg sets, please). The tournament will begin at 11AM at CBT. Register by making your $18 check payable to Sisterhood B nai Torah and sending to Eileen Selis, 395 Atlantic Avenue #306, Ormond Beach, FL Entry deadline is January 16, This is a fundraiser for Sisterhood so please pass the word to all of your Mah Jongg friends and come join the fun! Lunch is included!! January 31, 2014 Community Wide Shabbat at Temple Beth El. There will be no services at CBT this evening. February 23, 2014 CBT volunteers at the soup kitchen. Please volunteer to assist with this mitzvah of feeding the less fortunate in our community. Call the office and tell Helena which shift you prefer: 9:00 11:30 or 11:00 1:30. February 25, 2014 Sisterhood General Meeting, 7:00PM. Helen Farb, Carol Hyman, and I wish you and yours much happiness, good health, and joy throughout the New Year Shalom, Sue Abel Semi-Retired Rabbi by Ray Weiss continued from page 1 What I like is it s a very friendly, warm and welcoming congregation. The people are wonderful. It s the place to go. Shapiro, 66, has been a rabbi since 1981, starting out in New Jersey and later serving in various capacities at synagogues in Columbus, Ohio, Richmond, Va., and Longwood, in greater Orlando. He moved to Palm Coast five years ago. Shapiro also serves as a part-time rabbi at Temple Shalom in Deltona, holding services on average two or three times a month. In addition, he teaches Bible classes at a Jacksonville Jewish Center school that his grandchildren attend. Rabbi Shapiro said his January sermons at Congregation B nai Torah will center on the Sabbath of the Song, concerning the exodus, and he will discuss in the Torah portion how the scripture speaks to us in the topics and issues of the day that are in the news.

Page 7 Volume 22, Issue 5 The Thank You Spot The Jerry Doliner Food Bank would like to thank Rabbi Kane for promoting our turkey appeal and for being instrumental in obtaining to generous donations one from Daytona Toyota in the amount of $1,500 and the second from DeLand Kia, also in the amount of $1,500. The funds went a very long way in providing turkeys to so many needy families this holiday season. Thank you so much for your help. The Jerry Doliner Food Bank extends its sincerest appreciation to the congregants of Congregation B nai Torah who participated in the food drive for their generous donation of food products. Your donations really make a difference to our mission, and the Temple s support remains invaluable to us. Thank you, again, and may you all be blessed for caring. Dear Rabbi Kane and Miss Helen Farb, I just wanted to thank you both for your wonderful teaching and patience with the children at Religious School. Although Iyara did not attend the Hanukkah Party, she has certainly been practicing what she has learned at home. I hope you both enjoy the pic! Sincerely, Ivy We would like to thank everyone who sent us good wishes for our 60th Anniversary. Lois & Nat Liebman Thank you to the Holiday Charity Classic for the generous donation of $2,021 to the Jerry Doliner Food Bank. This donation helps to feed the hungry, regardless of race or religion, in our community. It means so much to the families who come to our door every day. Thank G-d Thanksgiving and Chanukah won t come along for many years. I don t think the Federation could do the work we accomplished ever again. We gave out hundreds of turkeys and side dishes; (the Community rallied for us) gave Chanukah gelt and presents to our less fortunate families, had a fantastic Chanukah party for our Jewish seniors, and had a major gifts event, courtesy of Buzzy & Barbara Glickstein, all in a month and a half. We gave out toys and turkeys for over 300 families during the last few weeks in December. Bless your Rabbi- Rabbi Kane. He was determined that everyone who asked for JEWISH FEDERATION OF VOLUSIA AND FLAGLER COUNTIES 470 Andalusia Avenue - Ormond Beach, Florida (386) FAX. # (386) turkeys was going to get one. Because of him, there were many who donated funds for the Turkey Appeal and he was instrumental in getting a substantial donation from two automobile dealers. Also, The Jerry Doliner Food Bank thanks Congregation B'nai Torah for the $2,000 that was donated from the Poker Tournament. We appreciate all the help that the temple has given to the Federation. Thank you to everyone who participated in the turkey drives, the Turkey baskets, the holiday gift cards, and the Chanukah and Holiday Appeal. Funds were also sent for the victims of the typhoon disaster in the Philippines. One of your own congregants had a relative who needed help and funds were sent directly to her. Because of your efforts, a big mitzvah was accomplished. Our 2014 campaign for the Federation is now in full gear. When you are called, please be generous. Collectively, your donation helps many people, locally, in Israel and in 60 countries around the world. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy New Year. Shalom, Howard Pranikoff, President Gloria Max, Executive Director

Page 8 The Torah Times Jewish War Veterans by Ray Weiss continued from pg 1 As I say to my members, when you re working and raising a family there s no time or incentive to join. You re just too busy, said Kates, who served in the Army in Korea. So most people join after they retire. The club currently has two women veterans who are members. Kates said any veteran who received an honorable discharge from the military, whether serving during war or not, is eligible to join the club, as can any spouse of a veteran or child who has a parent in the military. For more information about the Jewish War Veterans, call Stan Kates at Mah Jongg at CBT by Ray Weiss Congregation B nai Torah has made a reputation in recent years for its poker tournament fundraisers. But on Monday, January 20 th starting at 11 a.m., the temple s Sisterhood is holding its Second Annual Mah Jongg Tournament with the same intent. Admission is $18 and includes lunch. We re aiming for 60 to 70 women, Lea Moskowitz said. Last year we had 50. Moskowitz has played mahjong for about 30 years and currently is part of two weekly social games. I always like a challenge. It keeps the mind working, she said. You have to focus and pay attention. And there s an element of luck with drawing tiles. Somehow, Mah Jongg over the years has become a game associated with Jewish women, but not men. I know a few men who play. But they usually don t play. I don t know why it s become a woman s game, she said. For the uninitiated, Mah Jongg is a game that originated in China and commonly is played by four players. Similar to the card game Rummy, Mah Jongg combines strategy and calculation and involves a certain degree of chance. It s played with a set of 144 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols, although some regional variations use a different number of tiles. In most variations, each player begins by receiving thirteen tiles. In turn, players draw and discard tiles until they complete a legal hand using the fourteenth drawn tile. According to Wikipedia, the game was imported to the United States in the 1920s. By the 1930s, many revisions of the rules developed. The most common form, which eventually became "American mahjong", was most popular among Jewish women. Standardization came with the formation of the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) in 1937, along with the first American Mah Jongg rulebook, Maajh: The American Version of the Ancient Chinese Game. Many consider the modern American version a remake of a Jewish game, as many American Mah Jongg players are of Jewish descent. The NMJL was founded by Jewish players and is considered a Jewish organization. In 1986, the National Mah Jongg League conducted its first Mah Jongg Cruise Tournament, in conjunction with Mah Jongg Madness. Bari Amols is a relative newcomer to Mah Jongg. Several of her friends get together each Wednesday night. Mostly it s to hang out, I m being honest. If we get through three games it s a miracle, she said, laughing. I joined them about a year ago. It s fun. I m still learning. It s still so new.

Page 9 Volume 22, Issue 5 RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS by Helen Farb On Sunday, Dec. 15 th the Religious School went to the Grand Villa Assisted Living Center. We sang songs and were accompanied by Joan Kruger on the keyboard. Joan also brought instruments for the residents to play. Rabbi Kane told the story of Chanukah and the children helped the seniors craft a Star of David. The children and residents played the Dreidel game and everyone enjoyed Chanukah cookies and gelt. We all had a wonderful time and built lasting relationships with members of the Grand Villa community. The children learned to help and respect their elders and learned more about the spirit of Chanukah. This month the Religious School students will be celebrating Tu B Shevat, the New Year of the Trees, with stories and also some planting. Tot Shabbat will be on Friday, January 24th at 6:00 pm.
