2 VOLUME 10, ISSUE 7 Notes from Rabbi S. David Kane What a great time to turn the corner, turn the page, turn over a new leaf, start a new year. Did you know that the Torah has this month as one of the starts of the New Year? This the start of the agricultural year, where all around the world plants are going from their winter slumber to springtime growth. As human beings we can take a lesson from the change of seasons. This certainly hasn't been the easiest winter, so I think we can agree that a change for the better would be welcome. What shall we change first? The stock market? The value of real estate? Perhaps the price of oil? Unfortunately, we don't have control over those things. We do control how we let those things affect us. While we seem surrounded by bad news, there is always good news that goes unreported or unnoticed. In our lives we, just as on the television, take the good news for granted. Just as there is no news report that says "plane lands safely at airport," we tend not to notice that when we woke up there was air and gravity. We can't make bad news go away, but we can make an effort to take notice of the things that would be on our good news list every day. Passover, our holiday of Freedom gives us the choice of treasuring the good things in life. Valerie and I wish you a very happy Passover. Rabbi David Kane PAGE 2 Message from the President: Lea Moskowitz Spring has sprung at Congregation B nai Torah. We have been busy expanding our horizons spiritually, educationally and socially. This past month we have had Story Time Shabbat, Shabbat Across America and Prayers of the Heart. All who attended enjoyed services, the wonderful food, and the company of fellow members of CBT and guests. A busload of members and friends had a wonderful experience as we travelled to the Holocaust Museum in St. Pete and then cruised the inlets of Tampa Bay on a paddle boat. The museum was inspiring, the weather was perfect, the bay was beautiful and the food was delicious. I didn t hear a single complaint!!!!! We look forward to many more such experiences. If you wanted to learn about Jewish history in 79 minutes or less (well, not quite!), you should have attended the Rabbi s class. Both morning and evening classes were well attended, and you left with a time line of historical information that left you begging to know more. We look forward to many more such informative classes. The Rabbi even brought homemade cookies for us. Please check your wonderful 3 month calendar for the many exciting events coming up. We offer a wide palette of activities to meet the needs and wishes of all. If there is something you d like to see happen at CBT, present your idea to Rabbi. He is most open to suggestions and continues to look for new ways to make our congregational life fulfilling, The end of our fiscal year is soon coming to an end. This is our most challenging time of the year. Please try to complete your financial obligations for the year as soon as possible. Your help would be greatly appreciated and would help us meet the congregation s financial obligations. Look forward to seeing you at services and the many activities happening at CBT. Have a wonderful Pesach. Shalom, Lea PURIM 2009 Our annual reading of the Megillah (Scroll of Esther), Purim Play, and Party was held on Monday evening, March 9 th. About 30 people, children and adults, attended the festive event. Many children and some adults were in wonderful costumes (see picture). Valerie and Rabbi Kane were in medical scrubs costumes. The Religious School children read part of the Megillah, and played roles in the Purim story, as Rabbi Kane narrated. Everyone made loud noises with their graggers when Haman s name was mentioned and appropriately celebrated when Mordechai s and the Jewish People s names were mentioned. Then the Sisterhood served delicious refreshments hamentaschen and ice cream. A great time was had by all! PLEASE SEE PAGE #5 FOR A WONDERFUL PURIM PARTY PICTURE COURTESY OF HARVEY SINGER

3 VOLUME 10, ISSUE 7 PAGE 3 SISTERHOOD NEWS: President Lynn Hartman March really had the Sisterhood busy with many exciting events. It started with our wonderful Shabbat Across America dinner. We enjoyed the dinner so much with our home cooked meal and all of the women that helped us prepare it. We also had our (3 B) day which is Barbeque, Bingo and Bid. I thank everyone who gave a gift certificate, donated any new articles, or baked delicious goodies to be auctioned off. Looking forward to seeing everyone at our next fun-filled event. Thank you Congregation B nai Torah We appreciate everyone who was involved in the second annual Jerry Doliner Food Bank Walk-A-Thon and their hard work. Times are bad and these additional funds and food will benefit a lot of people. Shalom, Gloria Max/Executive Director Jewish Federation A New Way To Show You Care! Loving Hands Do you knit, crochet or sew? Your Loving Hands are needed to create baby blankets for God s Little Angels, Inc. This is a registered non profit organization. Angel s founder Mary Barrs said her Bundle of Joy corner is empty and young parents are seeking help for blankets and baby clothes. B nai Torah women can help to meet this need by making baby blankets at home (no meetings, no schedules, no budget items using whatever yarn or fabric you choose.) We have a pattern if you need one. Contact Carin Rothberg ( ) to let her know you want to be a part of this fun and fulfilling mitzvah. ADVENTURE IN ST. PETERSBURG Carole Miller On Sunday, March 22 nd, a nearly full busload of Congregation B nai Torah members and friends set out for the Tampa/St. Pete area. We were led, as always, by our very own Rabbi Kane who planned this day long trip. First stop was the Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg. Here we saw many reminders of the tragic events which unfolded in Europe under the Nazis and viewed photos and other reminders of man s worst acts against man. We have all seen these photos many times over the years but seeing wall after wall full of photos of concentration camps, death camps, crematoria and men, women and children forced to wear the yellow identifying Star of David was a stark reminder of those terrible days which took the lives of 6 million of our fellow Jews and millions of other innocent people. The world needs to be reminded over and over lest it forget or deny. Next stop was to board a paddle wheel vessel for a wonderful 3 hour trip on the calm waters of Boca Ciega Bay. A wonderful meal was served which was excellent. After eating we went outside and watched dolphins playing in the water and seabirds looking for their next meal. Then the 3 hour bus trip back home. It was a lovely day, well planned thanks to Rabbi Kane, and a good time was had by all.

6 VOLUME 10, ISSUE 7 Finding Faye Kellerman's latest book, The Mercedes Coffin, while visiting the Ormond Beach Library, I couldn't resist taking it out. I was instantly hooked with the Rina Lazarus, Pete Decker family murder mystery book. Our B'nai Torah library has all 17 previous books of the series. They can be found in the fiction, classified under FIC/Kel. Once you get hooked on her books, you too will be a fan. Lieutenant Pete Decker finds himself confronted with a 15 year old "cold case" dealing with the murder of a once favorite school teacher, Ben Little. A lady billionaire genius is still grieving over the loss of this teacher she had LIBRARY NOTES: Jean Leonard years ago. She offers the L. A. P. D. money to reopen the case, which they agree to do, placing it in Pete Decker's hands. Here in lies a wonderful tale of a fine police force unraveling this compelling story. In the background is Decker's lovely Jewish wife, Rina Lazarus, waiting, listening and keeping the family together as her husband performs his police duties. She always prepares for the Sabbath and Decker tries hard to be present for their daughter Molly on Friday nights. The book also enlightens the reader about rap music and the production of CDs as the murders revolve around several musicians. As Decker and his team work to solve this murder, others are also investigated as they come to the police attention. One gets a good overview of police work. Having grownup, with my 14 year older police caption brother, in New York City, it was renewing to recall all the situations he too, was confronted with. These brave men and woman put their lives on the line daily to overcome dangerous events in our society. Anyone, after reading a personal copy, is welcome to add it to our collection as I know it will be enjoyed and appreciated. The reader, Jean Leonard. 7 VOLUME 10, ISSUE 7 PAGE 7 JEWISH FEDERATION OF VOLUSIA AND FLAGLER COUNTIES 470 Andalusia Avenue - Ormond Beach, Florida (386) FAX. # (386) Dear Congregants: The trip to the Holocaust Museum and the boat ride was fantastic. My hat goes off to Rabbi Kane for initiating this trip. The Federation s Senior Passover Seder will be held at Indigo Banquet Center on April 1 st. It is wonderful to see our elderly from nursing homes, assisted living facilities and people in their 80 s coming together to share in the traditions of the Passover Seder. This luncheon is a lot of work and we couldn t manage without all the volunteers who make it a success. We would be remiss if we didn t thank Bea Phillips who will be making her delicious matza balls & soup and Ray Max for making his famous charosis. We thank Jonathan Rotstein for supporting this luncheon. In the coming days, we will make certain that our many less fortunate Jewish Citizens will be able to have food for this Holiday. A Passover Appeal letter was sent out and we would appreciate any donations that would defray the cost of helping our needy Jewish brethren have food for this holiday. Hold this date: Let s celebrate Israel s Independence Day together! On April 26 th, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ormond Performing Arts Center, the Federation and area Temples will be bringing you a fabulous dance group from Israel called Re-Vital that has won many awards, especially the 2008 Carmiel Award. We have witnesses that have seen their performance and they say it is fabulous. The charge will be $15.00 for adults and $5.00 for children under 12. The cost is minimal because the entire cost is born by some of the sponsors who have seen the show. They will perform the History of Jerusalem in Song and Dance including Audio-Visual Imagery with 20 dancers and 40 costume changes. This will be an evening to remember. Whatever faith you are you will be energized and amazed what Israel has accomplished. You can order your tickets in advance by calling the box office , Tues.-Fri from to 5.00pm. Israeli food will be available from 6:00 pm. The entire proceeds of the tickets will be given towards the bomb shelter in Sderot, Israel which is now being built and it will house 150 children. Before the dance group performs, we will have a short memorial service in memory of our brethren who died in the Holocaust. The survivors will be lighting candles. Things we need for a young Jewish mother- baby boy clothes for a 9 month old, diaper holder, crib sheets and a jogging stroller. Happy Passover!!
