The form can be placed in the collection basket, given to an usher, or sent to the office. CONFESSION (Reconciliation): Saturday 3:30 p.m. Sunday 10:00 a.m. or any time by appointment. BAPTISM: Parents must call the parish office at least 3 months prior to the Baptism. Baptism is ordinarily celebrated on the second Sunday of the month. PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION (PSR): provides religious formation for youth Pre-K through high school. PSR meets Sunday mornings at 9 a.m., September thru May. MARRIAGE: As soon as a decision to marry is reached, an appointment should be arranged by the couple with the priest to begin the process of marriage preparation. This should be at least 1 year in advance of the anticipated wedding date. Reservations should not be made with a reception hall before setting the date and time of the wedding with the church. VISITATION OF THE SICK: Please inform the parish office when someone is sick, shut-in, or hospitalized, and unable to attend mass. FUNERAL: When a member of the family dies, please notify the priest as soon as possible, before making arrangements with the funeral home.

GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL PARISH BULLETIN September 13, 2015 Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time The first line of the reading from the prophet Isaiah seems to pick up the themes from last week s readings. Isaiah tells us that the Lord GOD opens my ear that I may hear. Indeed, we need to open our ears because we must be able to fashion an answer to the Gospel question Jesus poses to his disciples: Who do you say I am? All of us have heard about Jesus and each of us has some idea about him. You may remember his "I am" statements: "I am the Bread of Life." "I am the Way." And perhaps most dramatic, "Before Abraham came to be, I am!" But today we find Jesus doing his own sort of opinion poll. His poll has two parts with two distinct questions. First, "Who do people say that I am?" And second, "Who do you say that I am?" Jesus does not seem to value very much what the people think of him. He wants to know what his disciples think of him. He immediately asks them to speak for themselves. He does not let them hide behind the opinions of others. He wants them to speak of their own opinions. As Catholics we can be put off by such a question. We know that Jesus is much more that an ordinary human being. But the question Jesus asks is personal: "Who do you say that I am?" We don t want to sit down and share our personal experience of Jesus in our lives (sounds too much like those evangelicals). Nor do we want to deal with Jesus teaching of the daily need to take up the cross to follow Jesus and deny our own wants, egos, desires, pleasures, etc. No, we surely don t want to talk about who Jesus is, yet that question and its answer are at the core of who we are as followers of Christ. Today let s place ourselves within the circle of Christ s disciples, ponder the Lord s question and what it means to follow him. Are we ready to accept his challenge: Who do you say Jesus is and are you really ready to deny yourself to follow him? In the Peace and Love of Our Risen Lord! We ask that you pray for the success of this meeting and in thanksgiving for our priests and their ministry. May God guide and strengthen them in their life of service and grant them wisdom and understanding to do His will and to lead us faithfully. We will have daily mass in the chapel on Monday and Tuesday, and Communion Services on Wednesday and Thursday during this period. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It seems obvious to us that Jesus Christ is the Lord of second chances. We need look no further than Peter s denial and rehabilitation for proof. Yet early Christians were more tentative with the gift of forgiveness. For them, every Sunday was an experience of the Lord s power to heal and forgive, yet there were three sins that placed persons at the margins of the community s life. In some places, the rift caused by these sins was permanent. The sins were apostasy (denial of the faith), adultery, and murder. They were particularly detested because of their power to divide and even scatter the community gathered around the Lord s table. Fragile and persecuted communities could crumble and disappear under the weight of a harm done by a public sinner. Sinners were excluded from the community in the hope that tough love would help them come to their senses and experience deeper conversion. Inevitably, lists of grave sins grew longer as various bishops added their personal pet peeves to the roster, and more people were required to do public penance. For them, reconciliation was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Many sinners accepted their condition and hoped for a chance at a deathbed reconciliation by anointing. With more and more people permanently on the outs, the church began to struggle toward the light of the Lord s unfailing gift of reconciliation. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
