The form can be placed in the collection basket, given to an usher, or sent to the office. CONFESSION (Reconciliation): Saturday 3:30 p.m. Sunday 10:00 a.m. or any time by appointment. BAPTISM: Parents must call the parish office at least 3 months prior to the Baptism. Baptism is ordinarily celebrated on the second Sunday of the month. PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION (PSR): provides religious formation for youth Pre-K through high school. PSR meets Sunday mornings at 9 a.m., September thru May. MARRIAGE: As soon as a decision to marry is reached, an appointment should be arranged by the couple with the priest to begin the process of marriage preparation. This should be at least 1 year in advance of the anticipated wedding date. Reservations should not be made with a reception hall before setting the date and time of the wedding with the church. VISITATION OF THE SICK: Please inform the parish office when someone is sick, shut-in, or hospitalized, and unable to attend mass. FUNERAL: When a member of the family dies, please notify the priest as soon as possible, before making arrangements with the funeral home.

2 ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL PARISH BULLETIN JUNE 8, 2014 FEAST OF PENTECOST With the celebration of the great feast of Pentecost, we bring the glorious fifty days of Easter to a close. The feast of Pentecost is all about amazement and astonishment! All of the disciples were gathered together in one place and suddenly they heard a noise like a strong driving wind and saw what appeared to them like tongues of fire settling on each one of them. They heard people from many nations under heaven speaking in their own languages, yet each one understood what the others were saying. No wonder that they were all amazed and astounded! Jesus had been telling them ever since his resurrection and, even before, that he would send them his Holy Spirit, that the Spirit would empower them to speak in his name, heal the sick, forgive sins, drive out demons; that they no longer needed to be afraid. They were now baptized in the Holy Spirit, one with Christ, empowered and freed to be witnesses in the world, to use their gifts in the service of others. On this Pentecost we too are filled with the Holy Spirit, filled with courage and boldness to witness to Christ s Gospel in the world and lay down our lives in the service of our sisters and brothers. Let us pray Creator Spirit and Giver of life as you did of old, make the dry, bleached bones of our lives live and breathe and grow again. Pour out your Spirit upon the whole creation. Come in rushing wind and flashing fire to turn the sin and sorrow within us into faith, power and delight. God of power, may the boldness of your Spirit transform us, may the gentleness of your Spirit lead us, may the gifts of your Spirit be our goal and our strength, now and always. Amen! Alleluia! Once in a while, a volcano hints at the sizzling magma upon which the whole human enterprise floats. Over eons, the surface cooled off a bit, and rain sizzled down for thousands of centuries, filling the oceans and sculpting the earth. We Christians can catch God s glory in a shimmering pool of water, but we can also capture God s burning desire to fan the tiny flames of our baptismal candles into something that will make a difference. In Sicily to this day, there is a custom of scattering rose petals down from the ceiling of church on the heads of the faithful, an effective reminder of the tongues of flame descending on the apostles, and a sign that the Holy Spirit still is poured out on the baptized. It is not merely a quaint custom, but a fairly potent sign of what baptism does. An interesting sidebar: if you have traced the Epiphany blessing on your doorway in chalk, Pentecost is the day to erase it. From now on, no need to rely on the wise men you are alive in the Spirit! Serving God and Serving Others When the Spirit came upon the church on the day of Pentecost, the Christian community was endowed with different gifts so that there would be different ministries and different works but all for the common good. What matters is not the nature of the gift but that through the gift the Spirit is working to renew the face of the earth. We ask you to reflect on how you are using your gifts and make a decision to join or renew your commitment to one or more parish ministries here at St. Gabriel. We especially need workers for the Eucharistic Ministry to the Sick, Gardening Ministry, & Liturgy of the Word for Children. Ministry Commitment will take place at masses June 28 & 29. 4 ORDER OF ST. LOUIS IX AWARD RECIPIENTS The Order of St. Louis IX award was established more than 40 years ago to honor those members of the laity who have contributed their time and talents to the church. The award will be presented in special ceremonies at St. Louis Cathedral on June 29 at 3 p.m. This year's recipients of the Order of St. Louis IX medallion from St. Gabriel parish are Cynthia Darensbourg and Anna Villanueva. Cynthia Darensbourg is a longtime member of St. Gabriel and has given many hours of service over the years to the Altar Society, the Parish School of Religion, RCIA for Children, the Ladies Auxiliary Knights of Peter Claver and the St. Vincent de Paul Ministry. You may also have seen her giving her time and talents to the Youth Ministry, Evangelization Ministry, Ministry to the Homeless, Garden Ministry, Office Ministry, and as a Eucharistic Minister. Cynthia also volunteers to collect Christmas cards for female prisoners to send to their families. She has truly demonstrated her faith by giving of her time and talents in serving others. While Anna Villanueva is a newer member of the parish, she has nevertheless been equally as enthusiastic in committing her time and talents to service. Anna originally came to New Orleans as a student volunteer after Katrina, helped in this parish and made St. Gabriel her home. She continues to serve as a contact for students from Marquette University and other volunteer groups who come to New Orleans. She has facilitated Just Faith a small-group program that develops leaders for parishand community-based social ministry. She has served as a tutor and mentor for children of incarcerated parents. She is a member of the Social Justice Ministry, the Music Ministry, the Pastoral Council, the Health and Wellness Ministry, the Adult Faith Formation Ministry, and the Evangelization Ministry. We acknowledge both Cynthia and Anna and the grace that has allowed them to open themselves to acting on their faith through service to the church. St. Gabriel and Loyola Institute for Ministry (LIM) Continuing Lay Ministry Education Program We are called to service and ministry. In parishes, the Christian community joins together to breathe a continuous breath of new life in the Church. This happens as more laity serve in the life and programs of the parish. To enhance the effectiveness of lay members of the parish, the St. Gabriel LIM program helps them to learn necessary skills, expand their theological and ecclesiological understanding, provide guidance, and learn how to use their talents to the fullest. A graduate degree or equivalent certification at a well-known institution of the highest quality is being offered to parishioners at 50% of the regular cost of tuition. If you are interested in taking your faith and skills to the next level, this program is for you.
