The form can be placed in the collection basket, given to an usher, or sent to the office. CONFESSION (Reconciliation): Saturday 3:30 p.m. Sunday 10:00 a.m. or any time by appointment. BAPTISM: Parents must call the parish office at least 3 months prior to the Baptism. Baptism is ordinarily celebrated on the second Sunday of the month. PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION (PSR): provides religious formation for youth Pre-K through high school. PSR meets Sunday mornings at 9 a.m., September thru May. MARRIAGE: As soon as a decision to marry is reached, an appointment should be arranged by the couple with the priest to begin the process of marriage preparation. This should be at least 1 year in advance of the anticipated wedding date. Reservations should not be made with a reception hall before setting the date and time of the wedding with the church. VISITATION OF THE SICK: Please inform the parish office when someone is sick, shut-in, or hospitalized, and unable to attend mass. FUNERAL: When a member of the family dies, please notify the priest as soon as possible, before making arrangements with the funeral home.

GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL PARISH BULLETIN February 2, 2014 FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD This Sunday, February 2, is the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary time and the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. This Feast is rooted in everyday life. In faithful observance of the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph present Jesus in the temple to consecrate him to the Lord. There they met the righteous Simeon and the prophet Anna, for whom temple worship is part of everyday life. God rewarded their fidelity by allowing them to see the one who was Savior and to hold him in their arms. When the ceremony was completed, Mary and Joseph and Jesus returned to their hometown. There they created a home and a family life. There Jesus grew up, becoming strong and wise, and the grace of God was upon him. Anna and Simeon bring to mind the small, but faithful community of women and men who gather almost every morning in our daily chapel to celebrate the Eucharist as part of their everyday lives. Like Simeon and Anna, who recognized Jesus in the unassuming guise of an infant in the arms of a poor young couple, they too live in hope, they wait, they believe, they recognize Jesus when he reveals himself in his word, in the sacrament of the Eucharist, in the unassuming guise of one another. We are all called to let these moments of graced encounters in our everyday lives change our lives forever. Stewardship Commitment Thank you for returning your Stewardship Commitment Card this past weekend. We received 161 Commitment Cards and of these 95 parishioners made a commitment to be proportionate givers, I indicating the percentage of their income they would give as their offering. The percentages ranged from 1% to 13%. We realize that others may also be proportionate givers but did not wish to indicate this on their commitment card. Many indicated the amount of their offering and we are grateful for all the generosity that was reflected in these commitments. Your response is a testament to the faith of this community. If you have not yet returned your Commitment Card, please do so this weekend. The average weekly collection for January was $10,699! Thank you for your incredible generosity. The average weekend mass attendance was 338. The grace, peace and love of Our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you, Father Doug Sister Kathleen Michele Bergeron Souper Bowl Of Caring Our youth will hold soup pots at church doors this weekend for the Souper Bowl of Caring. They will join young people in churches across the country to collect money for those who are hungry and hurting. All of the money collected is donated to a charity selected by the participant - none of the money is sent to the Souper Bowl of Caring headquarters. Organizers only ask that each participant report their collection so national totals can be determined and announced. Since the Souper Bowl of Caring began in 1990, more than $98 million has gone to help people in need. Please support the youth of our church in this effort to love our neighbors by contributing to the soup pot this weekend. Soon, the parish will order a new paschal candle from a catalogue or candle maker, or in some communities, wax will be collected to be melted and molded. Last year s paschal candle shows the wear and tear of summer heat, or many funerals or baptisms. Paschal candles have been around since at least the fourth century, when Constantine s biographer Eusebius reported that the night of the sacred vigil was transformed into the brilliancy of day, by lighting throughout the city pillars of wax, while burning lamps in every place so that the splendor of this night was brighter than the brightest daylight. Light was a precious commodity in the ancient world, and this lavish use of precious beeswax was a sign of the Christian s call to bear Christ s light into the world s darkness. In a pre-electric age, a whole city aglow from the paschal flame must have been a glorious sight, and a reminder to every baptized Christian of our vocation to be the light of the world. Rev. James Goode, OFM in 1989 is a day set aside to give special thanks to God for our families and place our every care in the arms of Jesus. God of Mercy and Love we place our African American Families before You today. May we be proud of our history and never forget those who paid a great price for our liberation. Bless us one by one and keep our hearts and minds fixed on higher ground. Help us to live for you and not for ourselves, and may we cherish and proclaim the gift of life.
