The form can be placed in the collection basket, given to an usher, or sent to the office. CONFESSION (Reconciliation): Saturday 3:30 p.m. Sunday 10:00 a.m. or any time by appointment. BAPTISM: Parents must call the parish office at least 3 months prior to the Baptism. Baptism is ordinarily celebrated on the second Sunday of the month. PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION (PSR): provides religious formation for youth Pre-K through high school. PSR meets Sunday mornings at 9 a.m., September thru May. MARRIAGE: As soon as a decision to marry is reached, an appointment should be arranged by the couple with the priest to begin the process of marriage preparation. This should be at least 1 year in advance of the anticipated wedding date. Reservations should not be made with a reception hall before setting the date and time of the wedding with the church. VISITATION OF THE SICK: Please inform the parish office when someone is sick, shut-in, or hospitalized, and unable to attend mass. FUNERAL: When a member of the family dies, please notify the priest as soon as possible, before making arrangements with the funeral home.

2 ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL PARISH BULLETIN APRIL 22, 2012 MESSAGE TO ST. GABRIEL PARISH FAMILY The grace, peace, love and joy of Our Risen Lord be with all of you! Easter Time---- The most glorious, joyous time in the church year! The 50 days (seven weeks) of Easter are filled with the sights and sounds of death being conquered by life, of joy and newness filling the Great New Day! Light overcoming darkness, water flowing giving new life, flowers blooming, amazing spring days with the leaping, greenly spirit of trees and the true, blue dream of sky, and everything that is natural, that is infinite, that is YES! (e.e.cummings) The word easter, derived from the Old English, means to shine, especially to shine like the dawn, and suggests both an action and a beginning, a new day. Thus, the Jesuit poet Gerard Manley Hopkins, speaking of Christ, uses easter as a verb in The Wreck of the Deutschland : Let him easter in us, be a dayspring to the dimness of us, be a crimson-cresseted east This can be our attitude or disposition as we enter into the 50 days of the celebration of Easter. Thus Easter is the most appropriate time to celebrate the great sacraments of initiation, Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. All of these sacraments are about new life, new beginnings, being immersed into the death and resurrection of Christ so that we can be one with him and live his risen life. So we welcome, congratulate and rejoice in our newly baptized members who were baptized at Easter: Travis Johnson, Justin Sterling, Bryan Hines, Karlashia Johnson, Julia White, Christopher Chapman, Jr., and Dorsett Russell. We welcome, congratulate and rejoice in our two women, Rita Edwards and Wanda St. Martin, who were received into full membership in the Catholic Church through the renewal and confirmation of their baptism and by being one with us at the table of the Eucharist for the first time. Photos of these newly baptized and received are on display in church. This week on Tuesday, April 24, eight of our youth will receive the sacrament of Confirmation, confirming them in the renewal of their baptism. We congratulate and rejoice with Leda Hardesty, Anthony Battiste, De Ja Gould, Corey Rodrigue, Andre Shelby, Jr., Abriah Williams, Sierra Wilson and Justin Roussell. We pray that the Holy Spirit will truly fill them and put them on fire with the love of Christ and form them into bold and courageous disciples. Since their Confirmation will take place at Maria Goretti we will celebrate with them at our Sunday mass, April 29, followed by a reception for them, their families and friends. First Eucharist for our young children will be Sunday, May 6, at the 10:30 mass with a reception after mass. We will put their names in next week s bulletin. Let us pray for all of these youth and children as they prepare to be more fully initiated into their faith and become more faithful disciples of the Risen Christ. The Peace of the Risen Christ, Father Doug Sister Kathleen Michele Bergeron Annual Retirement Collection for Priests The Archdiocese of New Orleans is truly blessed by the service of many dedicated priests. We are particularly blessed by the continued service of over 65 retired priests who continue to serve the Church of New Orleans and the surrounding region in many ways. The annual collection on April 29th Good Shepherd Sunday -- for these retired priests is used to defray the significant costs of their medical and retirement expenses. Your participation in this collection is a way to say thank you to our retired priests for their many years of service to us, the Church of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Altar Server of the Year Congratulations to Rudy DeBose who has been chosen as the Altar Server of the Year from St. Gabriel Parish! Rudy has been a server for 7 years since he was in the fourth grade. He is a very competent, dependable server who not only is responsible for his scheduled assignment but also is willing to help out to replace someone who cannot keep their assignment. Rudy is also active in the Youth Ministry, participating in the Walk for the Hungry, and the basketball and volleyball teams. Besides his parish activities Rudy is very active in the Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Life Scout. He is also a member of the Debate Team at St. Augustine where he is in the 10 th grade. Congratulations, Rudy! Your parish is very proud of you and hopes that you will continue to be an active participant in your parish into your adult life!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The season of First Communions is here, and invitations pour in as the new communicants, mostly seven years old, gather extended families for their first reception of the Eucharist. Recently, the celebrations are often on Sundays, in the regular gatherings of the faith community. There, it becomes clear that First Communion is meant to initiate a regular pattern of reception, and that there is to be a second, third, hundredth, thousandth celebration. Eastern Catholics and Orthodox children follow a different plan, since they are given a taste of the consecrated wine at their baptism as infants. We Western Christians delay until the age of reason, but many years ago, Communion was not for children at all. Twelve to fourteen was the typical time for Roman Catholics to receive for the first time, and in those days this was a transition into the adult world of work and marriage. The custom did not begin to shift to childhood until reforms set in place by Pope St. Pius X began to take hold in the 1920s. 4 It is appropriate today, World Earth Day, to reflect on how we can be better stewards of our earth. Ecological stewardship is a concern expressed by the United States Bishops in their pastoral letter: Stewardship: A Disciple s Response, and is a continuing concern for Christian stewards. Here are a few eco-stewardship tips and quotes. 1. KEEP IT REAL The winter is past... the flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come. Song of Solomon, You know what they say about Mother knowing best? Well, Mother Nature never needed to steal sips from a chemical cocktail of pesticides, weed killers, and chemical fertilizers to keep her act together. Nix the poisons and layer on some all-natural compost, instead. 2. MAKE COMPOST FROM KITCHEN SCRAPS Each part of nature is something precious to God. It follows readily that to honor God, one must honor the creation which God loves. Known as gardener s gold, compost stimulates healthy root development, improves soil texture, aeration, and water retention. Why waste your hard-earned cash on commercial products when the real deal is free for the taking? Speed up the process with the help of earthworms or go wrigglefree (if you re the squeamish sort). 3. BUY RECYCLED It was in the forest that I found the peace that passeth all understanding. Jane Goodall, Reason for Hope. If your sensibilities balk at the idea of reusing yogurt or takeout containers to house your hydrangeas, check out the myriad environmentally friendly planters and raised-garden kits now available. It takes less energy to recycle something than to mine virgin materials, so whether you choose recycled copper, plastic, or even rubber to anchor your tender shoots, it s all copasetic. Admire your handiwork and ecosmarts while lounging on recycled lawn furniture. 4. GROW YOUR OWN FOOD OR JOIN A COMMUNITY GARDEN The blowing wind, the mild, moist air, the exquisite greening of trees and grasses in their beginning, in their ending, they give God their praise. Urban dwellers bereft of a yard shouldn t fret: You can still get in on the hoeing and growing action by signing up for a plot at your local community garden.
