The form can be placed in the collection basket, given to an usher, or sent to the office. CONFESSION (Reconciliation): Saturday 3:30 p.m. Sunday 10:00 a.m. or any time by appointment. BAPTISM: Parents must call the parish office at least 3 months prior to the Baptism. Baptism is ordinarily celebrated on the second Sunday of the month. PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION (PSR): provides religious formation for youth Pre-K through high school. PSR meets Sunday mornings at 9 a.m., September thru May. MARRIAGE: As soon as a decision to marry is reached, an appointment should be arranged by the couple with the priest to begin the process of marriage preparation. This should be at least 1 year in advance of the anticipated wedding date. Reservations should not be made with a reception hall before setting the date and time of the wedding with the church. VISITATION OF THE SICK: Please inform the parish office when someone is sick, shut-in, or hospitalized, and unable to attend mass. FUNERAL: When a member of the family dies, please notify the priest as soon as possible, before making arrangements with the funeral home.

2 ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL PARISH BULLETIN MARCH 1, 2015 SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT RENEWAL OF BAPTISM The primary focus during Lent and Easter Time is on the sacrament of Baptism. Lent is the preparation time for the renewal of Baptism. We join with the Elect in the RCIA during this time of purification and enlightenment as they begin their immediate preparation for the initiation sacraments. The baptized, including Sarah, Brandi and all of us, reflect on the grace of our own Baptism; having been claimed for Christ, living according to the Gospel, being Christ s light in the world. We become more keenly aware during Lent of our own and the community s failings to be true to our baptismal commitment. Our practice of penance during Lent is a way of purifying us from our tendency to fail in our commitment. We will join Sarah and Brandi on the next three Sundays of Lent in the Scrutinies. The scrutinies are meant to uncover, then heal, all that is weak or sinful in the hearts of the elect and all of us; to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong and good. The scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver us from the power of sin, to protect us against temptation, and to give us strength in Christ, who is the way, the truth and the life. Thus the celebration of the Resurrection at the Easter Vigil is a celebration of the sacrament of Baptism for those who are not baptized and a renewal of Baptism for those baptized, a renewal of our call to be priest, prophet and shepherd with Christ. The grace, peace and love of Our Risen Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you, Father Doug Sister Kathleen Michele Bergeron Second Collection for Catholic Charities The second collection at all Masses February 28, 2015, and March 1, 2015, will be taken up for Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans. Your support provides crucial funds that enable Catholic Charities to be a source of hope and help for the poor and needy in our archdiocese. Vulnerable children, struggling families and frail seniors receive basic nutrition, essential health care, education, and case management services. The homeless and unemployed are connected to resources for shelter, care and employment. Your support also provides emergency relief during times of unforeseen disaster. Pope Francis often reminds us that by loving and helping the poor, we love and serve Christ. Please join in this mission of service to the poor and needy by supporting Catholic Charities with an open and generous heart this weekend. NEXT WEEKEND Daylight Savings Time Begins This Lent Become a Source of New Life A germinating seed deepens its own life as it is drawn to the light, and transforms every object and obstacle as it makes its upward surge. In this way the potential of the seed is unlocked and it becomes a source of new life to the world around it. We can each be that source of new life for others during Lent, and always, by holding fast to our mandate to witness to others so that they may awaken to and rediscover the vital and inexhaustible love of Jesus Christ. How do we do this? At the individual level this action may be through a deepening of our own personal faith as well as outreach to others: a direct conversation about Catholicism, extending an invitation to Mass, or providing simple witnesses such as blessing ourselves before a meal in a restaurant, offering to pray for someone in need, keeping a devotional item on our desk at work or wearing a crucifix for others to see. Our eagerness and zeal for the task can be both the invitation and support for those who want to join, or who are taking their first steps back to the community of faith. So don t shy away from the Holy Spirit s summons to speak about our Catholic faith, to have the courageous, and sometimes awkward, conversation with a friend, a relative, a co-worker, or a neighbor. Step out of your comfort zone! Heed the Spirit s urging to reach out and invite others by name, with a smile and a friendly welcome.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Within the tradition of the Christian church, there are differing ways of observing a Lenten fast. For Eastern Catholics and Orthodox, the discipline is close to our understanding of abstinence. Certain foods are eliminated from the diet entirely. The rules are basically monastic rules, and the customs of a monastery table are embraced in the home. This year, Meatfare Sunday is February 26, and it is the last time that meat is admitted to the diet until Easter. The following Sunday, known as Cheesefare Sunday, takes cheese and all dairy products from the table. It is also known as forgiveness Sunday because a true fast is about crowning life with love, holding back harsh words, and cutting off anger. The Eastern churches fast even from celebrating the Eucharist from Monday through Friday. We don t count Sundays as fast days, but Eastern Christians fast through the weekends. People are expected to come as close to the ideal as possible, and the Lenten services keep reminding them not to take pride in their fasting, since the devil himself never eats!
