We grow in being faithful followers of Jesus as we come to know Him better, learn that suffering and death are not ends in themselves, and experience the new life Jesus promises. Jesus on the cross feels the whole weight of evil, and with the force of God s love He conquers it, He defeats it with His resurrection. This is the good that Jesus does for us on the throne of the cross. Pope Francis Tuesday, September 15, is the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows which focuses on Mary s intense suffering during the passion and death of Christ. In her suffering she reminds us of the evil of sin and shows us the way of true repentance. 3 FAMILY MINISTRY AND FORMATION Religious Education and Catholic Formation for Our Public School Families SCHEDULE: We will resume on Wednesday night, September 16, with the Ice Cream Social (see below for more information). WHAT IS FAMILY MINISTRY AND FORMATION? Family Ministry and Formation is a unique and dynamic religious education process that teaches our Catholic Faith to the children, youth and parents of our community, including preparation for the Holy Sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation. Please note that preparing children or youth for the sacraments is a two-year preparation process. For more information about our program, please call Karen at , x 201 or at karinab@aol.com. Registration Forms If you are new to the parish and/or would like to enroll in our Faith Formation Program, please call the Faith Formation Office. Returning families should receive their forms this week. Please call if you do not receive the forms. Forms need to be returned to the office by September 9 so we can plan accordingly. Thank you. WITH OUR CONDOLENCES The St. Patrick parish community extends our condolences to the family of Margaret Strausbauch who passed away on September 1 at the age of 98. SERVANT Sometimes the hour and the person meet. Sometimes, when a task or mission is set upon our shoulders, we know we must meet our responsibilities and we are ready. These are heady and invigorating times. The first reading and the Gospel proclamation today are intimate glimpses of a commencement, an inauguration of a challenging future. In both readings, a sense of gravity prevails. The first reading is from the mysterious Servant Songs from the book of Isaiah. The person is steadfast and brave. His courage and bravery are not located in his stout heart, but in God. We are reminded, The Lord GOD opens my ear that I may hear (Isaiah 50:4), so the servant understands the mission. Let us come together to pray for our Holy Father and pray that we can have open hearts and minds to his message of love! We encourage our parishioners to prayerfully reflect on these powerful writings from our Holy Father. CANONIZATION OF BLESSED JUNIPERO SERRA Jesus challenges us to be peacemakers, yet there are so many things of this world which divide us in thought, word, and deed. We strive for singleness of mind and heart that leads us together on our quest to know, love, and serve God but like any family, there are times we may disagree about the how and why of that quest. We constantly face situations which call for discernment and love. One area of confrontation we face as a Church is the upcoming sainthood of Blessed Junipero Serra. Although many are eager for the canonization, there are also people who are offended, hurt, or angry. Protests have taken place at many missions which, in some cases, have overshadowed the upcoming event. In the recently published book, Junipero Serra: California, Indians, and the Transformation of a Missionary, the authors say that the history of Father Serra is more than likely compromised on both sides of the story by many factors. All history is colored by our own experiences, resources we choose, information and ideas we cling to, and an inability to fully understand cultural differences when looking into the past. Yes, there were many atrocities during the Mission era. Reading and reflecting about those Native Americans who suffered during that era and whose descendants are still affected by those injustices should prompt us to look for ways to seek compassion, understanding, reconciliation, and peace. In the meantime, however, shouldn't we also trust our Church's decision that Father Serra stood out against those atrocities, lived a holy life, and deserves to be declared a saint? We can balance the celebration of the canonization with true sensitivity and love. I've recently spoken to Father Ken Laverone, OFM, Franciscan Provincial Vicar, who has studied the documents and history of Father Serra for over a decade and is now a Vice Postulator for the Cause of Sainthood of Blessed Junipero Serra. Besides the other responsibilities that go with that position, he has also spent time in the last few months within the Order, meeting with Cardinal Amato in Rome, the Archdiocese of Washington DC where the event will take place, and the Bishops of California, determining some possible means to assist in addressing the legitimate concerns of the descendants of the California Mission Native Americans, as he stated in a letter to his parishioners. The Franciscan Order has worked hard planning and implementing ideas toward their goal of reaching out in a spirit of peace and reconciliation. As St. Paul told the Ephesians, Bear with one another charitably, in complete selflessness, gentleness and patience. Do all you can to preserve the unity of the Spirit by the peace that binds you together. Franciscans in California invite you to pray a novena beginning on September 14, nine days before the canonization. A good one can be found on usac_si/jsnovena.pdf. Perhaps our dear Father Serra will grant another miracle, of forgiveness and peace between us all. Kathleen Molaro

5 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It seems obvious to us that Jesus Christ is the Lord of second chances. We need look no further than Peter s denial and rehabilitation for proof. Yet early Christians were more tentative with the gift of forgiveness. For them, every Sunday was an experience of the Lord s power to heal and forgive, yet there were three sins that placed persons at the margins of the community s life. In some places, the rift caused by these sins was permanent. The sins were apostasy (denial of the faith), adultery, and murder. They were particularly detested because of their power to divide and even scatter the community gathered around the Lord s table. Fragile and persecuted communities could crumble and disappear under the weight of a harm done by a public sinner. Sinners were excluded from the community in the hope that tough love would help them come to their senses and experience deeper conversion. Inevitably, lists of grave sins grew longer as various bishops added their personal pet peeves to the roster, and more people were required to do public penance. For them, reconciliation was a once in a lifetime experience. Many sinners accepted their condition and hoped for a chance at a deathbed reconciliation by anointing. With more and more people permanently on the outs, the church began to struggle toward the light of the Lord s unfailing gift of reconciliation. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. St. Patrick s Church has a group of its members who have banded together all those who are looking for friendship to enjoy life around us. We are men and women without partners and we attend theater, movies, local activities and we sometimes travel. We love hostels and other affordable lodgings. We meet once a month on the last Thursday of the month at St. Cecilia s Center, a member s house or a local park to chat and share a potluck small dinner. CATECHETICAL SUNDAY SEPT. 19 & 20 COMMISSIONING OF ALL CATECHISTS AT THE 9 A.M. MASS The Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday the weekend of September 19 and 20. This year s theme is Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person. Those whom the community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. All those who teach and share our Catholic faith are encouraged to come to the 9 a.m. Mass to be commissioned and blessed as they continue their ministry in our parish. Please keep these special ministers of our Catholic faith in your prayers!
