2 ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL PARISH BULLETIN November 11, nd Sunday in Ordinary Time MESSAGE TO ST. GABRIEL PARISH FAMILY CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR PRESIDENT, BARACK OBAMA! We congratulate our president, Barack Obama, on being re-elected as our president for the next four years! We pray for him to be open to God s Spirit, to fill him with wisdom, vision, courage, a desire to work with others for the common good of all in our country and around the world. We pray for healing for our country that we may be able to move forward together for the good of all. This Sunday, November 11, is the thirty-second Sunday in ordinary time. The first reading and the are about two widows who were extremely poor but outstanding in generosity. In the first reading, the widow s powerlessness in her poverty had reached its ultimate limit. Only death remained. She nonetheless gave the last crumbs of what she and her son had to live on, with total trust in the word of the man of God (Elijah) that God would provide. Her trust was not mistaken. Like the widow in the first reading, the widow in today s gave from her substance, from what she had to live on. Meager as it was, it was worth more in the eyes of God than all the sizeable donations of those who did not suffer as she would for her generosity. Literally, the Greek reads: she gave her whole life. Is this not what Jesus would later do? This Sunday is also Veterans Day, a day to remember those who gave their whole lives in the service of their country. Let us not only remember our veterans and their loved ones in our prayers but also let us pray for peace in the world that young men and women will not have to die and fight in wars again. May the grace, peace and love of Our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you! Father Doug Sister Kathleen Michele Bergeron CCHD s Mission: More Important Than Ever Scripture Readings The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) was established in 1969 to provide funding for groups of poor and low-income people who are empowered to address the root causes of poverty in their communities. CCHD has provided nearly 8,000 grants to self-help organizations led by poor persons. CCHD offers a hand up, not a hand out, helping people and communities overcome injustice, escape poverty, and build bridges of solidarity. In Louisiana the Bucket Brigade, the Micah Project are just 2 examples of grant recipients. Next week s Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development needs your support. Fight poverty in America. Defend human dignity. Give to the CCHD Collection. Sun., Nov. 11 Mon., Nov. 12 Tues., Nov. 13 Wed., Nov.14 Thurs., Nov.15 Fri., Nov. 16 Sat. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION New religious faith gives fresh lenses for viewing human customs, and the wisdom to transform them. In the ancient world, the Romans feared the dead. Funeral customs were designed to hasten the departure of souls to the next world. Cremation was the rule, although burial increased in popularity in the second century. Procession from the place of death to the place of cremation or burial was the most important part of the funeral. Those who carried the funeral bier carried it low, close to the ground, to promote the soul s departure to the nether world. Christians, on the other hand, did not fear the dead, but cherished them as they consigned them to Christ s love and protection. Gradually, they began to reject customs rooted in fear. Christians carried their dead to their resting places singing, with the bier carried high, away from the ground and toward the heavens. For the Christian, the grave was a sign of hope and a place of remembrance. Superstitious Romans feared burial places, and so the Christians cherished them as places of remembrance and prayer, and in time, even celebrated the Eucharist there. In November, many of us visit the cemetery for prayer and the autumn clean-up. By cherishing our dead, we are responding in faith to a vital part of our Christian tradition. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Living the Why do we admire people who are generous, especially those that "give their all"? What does "giving my all" mean to me in my life?
4 Save the Date Sister Dianne Fanguy from Ciudad Sandino, Nicaragua will be visiting us on November 17 th &18 th. Sr. Dianne Fanguy will speak at both the vigil mass and the 10:30 Mass on Sunday. She will give us an update on what is going on with our friends in Ciudad Sandino. Wellness Coping with the Holiday Blues It s that time of year again! However, for many people instead of the holidays being a time when "the days are merry and bright," they are more likely to be experiencing the blues for many different reasons. One of the best ways to handle the holidays and cope with holiday anxiety and distress is to remember to get your R-E-S-T: Reasonable expectations and goals. Be realistic about what you can and cannot do. Get plenty of rest and relaxation. Exercise daily. Eat and drink in moderation. Enjoy free activities. Simplify to relieve stress. Set a budget for social activities and gifts. Simple gifts can still bring happiness. Time to relax and remember. Spend time with caring, supportive people. Keep in mind that traditions can be changed A mild depressed mood may be difficult for a few hours or days, but it can be managed with good self care and seeking out social support (e.g., talking to family and friends). If these methods are used and the mood persists or gets worse, things may be more serious requiring a professional s intervention. Catholic Charities of New Orleans offers counseling services through Counseling Solutions (504) Counseling can help when things seem too much to cope with alone.
