The ignorance of such a question is breathtaking. The instruction and the narrative of the book of Exodus influences our world today more than one can possibly contemplate. Our legal system has its roots in the Law given to God s people in Exodus. Themes from this book powerfully influence people s thinking all over the world. Think of the famous trilogy written by Taylor Branch about the American civil rights movement: Parting the Waters, Pillar of Fire, At Canaan s Edge. For the Christian, Exodus is one of the most important books of the Bible to understand. In Exodus we see the glory of God. It is in this book that Moses says to God, I pray You, show me Your glory! God does just that. In fact the Psalter constantly looks back to Exodus to see the awesome working of God. Come and see what God has done: He is awesome in his deeds among mortals. He turned the sea into dry land; they passed through the river on foot. There we rejoiced in him, who rules by his might forever, Whose eyes keep watch on the nations; let the rebellious not exalt themselves. Psalm 66:5-7 He it was who struck down the firstborn of Egypt, both human beings and animals; He sent signs and wonders into your midst, O Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants. Psalm 135:8-9 To Him who struck Egypt through their firstborn, for his steadfast love endures forever and brought Israel out from among them, for his steadfast love endures forever; With a strong hand and an outstretched arm, for his steadfast love endures forever; Who divided the Red Sea in two, for his steadfast love endures forever; And made Israel pass through the midst of it, for his steadfast love endures forever; But overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea, for his steadfast love endures forever. 2 (Continued from page 1) Exodus helps us to understand sin and the judgment of God. In Exodus we see in detail the opposition and rebellion of Pharaoh against God. Pharaoh is a picture of the kings and great people of this world and his heart is hard and only gets harder. He comes to a terrible end. We observe in Exodus the sin of the Children of Israel and we realize that we are like them. We see in Exodus how God deals with the sin and faithlessness of His own people. Exodus helps us to understand our Redeemer and His work of Redemption. The New Testament constantly looks back to Exodus in order to understand what Jesus has done and how we ought to live as a result. And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning him self. Luke 24:27 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 1 Corinthians 5:7 Know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 1 Peter 1:18-19 Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. Jude 5 The Exodus story is our story. In Exodus we find the primary model of God s idea of redemption. What is the Lord doing with us now, if you are trusting Him as your Savior? He has rescued you from slavery to idolatry, sin and death. Because of the blood of a perfect Lamb, He has passed over your sins. Now He is leading you through the wilderness of this world, providing for you and protecting you, as you look forward to life with Him in a promised land. MEN S RETREAT Exodus helps us to see God s plan to reach the whole world. In the book, The God Who Makes Himself Known, W. Ross Blackburn searches for the theological heart of the book of Exodus, and concludes that it is God s missionary purpose in bringing all nations to a knowledge of Himself. Exodus helps us to learn how to live as God s people. Speaking of the events in Exodus, the Apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 10:11, Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. In Exodus we find that God demands obedience from His people as He reveals Himself to them. He leads them through the wilderness and takes up residence in their midst. God s people begin the story building for Pharaoh and they finish by building a Tabernacle for God. Moreover, we, like Israel, are always tempted to trade an idol, a golden calf, for the real Savior, the Lamb who causes God to pass over our sins.
