1 November 2009 Mt. Hope Lutheran Church Child Care and Preschool Spirit of Hope 3601 West Old Shakopee Road Bloomington, MN "O come let us worship the Lord. Let us make a joyful noise to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving." Psalm 95:1-2 Dear friends of Mount Hope, I can't believe it! We haven't even celebrated the Reformation yet, but I'm already writing for our November newsletter. Yes, in just a couple of weeks November will be here. Can you believe it? With November comes celebrating Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving for many people is just a one day event. But for us Christians like you and me, it's always time for thanksgiving. Every day we can and should be grateful for what we have received and what we have been given. We can be grateful personally for what God in Christ Jesus has done for us and our salvation. We can be grateful to God for where He has led, and where He helped us escape illness, temptation, worry, etc. We can rejoice because everything good and wonderful in our life is a gift from Him. This year I'm especially thankful for you! For your partnership in the Gospel. For many of you it has been a year of growth in worship, prayer and service. I'm thankful for the care and love I see you sharing with so many people in Jesus' name. For all the volunteers who have willingly and cheerfully offered their time and leadership. I'm thankful for the faithfulness that I see in so many of Mount Hope's long time members. At the same time I'm grateful that God has allowed our congregation to serve several new families this past year. I'm also "sitting on the edge of my seat" so to speak as I think about the future that God has in store for our congregation. Yes, God is good all the time! As He continues to unite us in love and mission, may He also mold our daily attitude into one of constant gratitude. I hope we will be seeing you on Thanksgiving eve at 6:30 p.m. for a joyful and uplifting time of worship as we give our heavenly Father our thanks for all our blessings. Following our service we will enjoy some pie and fellowship time together. Please join us! God love you, Pastor Dan "Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him and praise His name." Psalm 100:4 Page 1

WOMEN OF FAITH BIBLE STUDY FELLOWSHIP We are enjoying our new series, Celebrating Friendship this fall and have been so excited to have some new ladies either join us for the first time or have come back! It's not too late to come if you are still interested as we would love to see you! This month we will be meeting only once because of Thanksgiving, and we will be meeting in the home of Tracie Klug-Melbostad at 4700 Nord Street ( ) on Thursday, November 12, from 7-9 p.m. We will be working on lesson 4, which can be done either ahead of time or during our study. There will be NO study in December as we will be celebrating Christ's birth with a Christmas party at Karen Mack's, 3610 West 103rd Street ( ) on December 10. In addition to our study time at each meeting, we enjoy wonderful fellowship and great desserts as we take turns hosting in each other's homes. If you have any questions about our group, please contact Dianne Ritter. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Mt. Hope will again be collecting items for Samaritan s Purse - Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box Ministry. There will be a box above the coat rack for your donations. She will need to know the name of the piece you will play, as well as the composer of your piece. Appropriate pieces would include Spiritual, classical, or standardized recital repertoire. All interested musicians can join us in praise team rehearsals on Wednesday evenings 7-8:30 p.m. WOMEN OF HOPE Did you know that all the women of Mt. Hope are members of the newly named, Women of Hope? We would love to have you join us for our monthly meetings and activities throughout the year! There are many different ways to become involved in the work of Women of Hope, so we encourage you to talk to any one of the following Executive Board members about the activities. Linda Quittschrieber and Eileen Daak are the Co-Chairpersons, Carol Tolzin is our Secretary, Betty Schleifer is the Treasurer and Dianne Ritter is the Spiritual Growth leader. We have many exciting program guests coming up this year, starting with our meeting on November 10 at 6:30 p.m. Our very own police off icer, Chris Woodhall, will be speaking to us about Women's Self-Defense and will demonstrate some ways to protect ourselves if ever confronted. Victoria Frein will be assisting with those demonstrations, and we encourage all ladies, especially our young girls to come. We would like to thank everyone for attending our annual Harvest Boutique as it was a great success! A special thanks to all of the ladies (and guys!) who worked so tirelessly in preparing in many ways for the boutique, as this is our main fundraiser for the year. A special thanks to Karen Mack for her dedication to our home-baked pie sale. Without her efforts and organization, we would not be enjoying all of those wonderful pies every year! Page 3

4 SENIOR-HIGH YOUTH NEWS November 2009 Dear friends, Brrrr..I had forgotten how cold it gets here, and how quickly! The good news is that our youth group, CHILL, is hot! We have been meeting weekly on Wednesday nights to chill out together and play games. We also have a devotion and prayer time. God has indeed answered many prayers of our group. Scholarships have come through, summer plans have received approval, and our group is coming together. We are learning to lean on each other to get through important assignments, school overloads, and spiritual needs. Not only are we meeting on Wednesday nights, but we are also studying God's Word together on Sunday mornings. We are going through Sean Covey, Jr.'s book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. We are adapting the study to help us become effective Christians. We set goals to be proactive at either reversing a negative habit, such as gossiping, into a positive habit, such as putting the best construction on everything. Being proactive in your life is habit number one! We wrote our goals on cards to help hold us accountable for change. Did you know it takes 30 days to change a bad habit, or start a new one? It's like learning to wear a watch. It bugs you at f irst, but then you get used to it, and it becomes a habit. Maybe there is a habit that you would like God's help to change or to develop. Keep up in the bulletin with the weekly habits we are covering through the end of the year. Pray for our youth and for your own habits that need adjusting. Upcoming youth events include selling Christian calendars for the National Youth Gathering trip, serving Advent dinners, going through the corn maze in Shakopee, raking leaves, touring Concordia College and attending a home football game, a get-together with the youth at Victory Church in Eden Prairie, as well as our weekly meetings. Thank you for your support! Thank you again for your warm welcome. Even if the weather is chilly, the temperature in the church is warm and friendly. I am thankful for the people of Mount Hope, and I pray that you have a blessed Thanksgiving! In Christ, Jill Hartman, DCE of Youth Ministry YOUNG GIRLS BIBLE STUDY/ACTIVITY GROUP It was great welcoming back our 6-8th grade girls this fall and I look forward to another fun year together! We usually meet on the second and fourth Sundays with a bible study discussion time on the 2nd Sunday and a fun activity on the 4th Sunday. Because of the upcoming holidays though, we will be meeting only once in November and December. A movie night will be announced as best suited to everyone's schedule for our November activity and posted in the bulletin. Any questions about our girls group can be addressed to Dianne Ritter. 9 November 2009 DAILY READINGS The following Bible passages are from the new daily Lectionary (a list of assigned readings). Following an historic practice, this Lectionary presents a continuous reading through the books of the Bible, often associating certain books with particular seasons of the church year (e.g., reading Isaiah during Advent). Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament is read each year. Two readings of verses each are provided for each day, one from the Old Testament, the other from the New. Occasionally a third, optional reading is listed, providing parallel readings. 1 Nov (All Saints' Day) Deut 34:1-12 Matt 21: Nov Jer 1:1-19 Matt 21: Nov Jer 3:6-4:2 Matt 22: Nov Jer 5:1-19 Matt 22: Nov Jer 7:1-29 Matt 23: Nov Jer 8:18-9:12 Matt 23: Nov Jer 11:1-23 Matt 24:1-28 Jer 12:1-19:15 8 Nov Jer 20:1-18 Matt 24: Nov Jer 22:1-23 Matt 25: Nov Jer 23:1-20 Matt 25: Nov Jer 23:21-40 Matt 25: Nov Jer 25:1-18 Matt 26: Nov Jer 26:1-19 Matt 26:20-35 Rev 13: Nov Jer 29:1-19 Matt 26:36-56 Rev 14: Nov Jer 30:1-24 Matt 26:57-75 Rev 15: Nov Jer 31:1-17, Matt 27:1-10 Rev 16: Nov Jer 33:1-22 Matt 27:11-32 Jer 34:1-36:32; 45:1-51:64 18 Nov Jer 37:1-21 Matt 27:33-56 Rev 17: Nov Jer 38:1-28 Matt 27:57-66 Jer 39:1-44:30 20 Nov Dan 1:1-21 Matt 28: Nov Dan 2:1-23 Rev 18: Nov Dan 2:24-49 Rev 19: Nov Dan 3:1-30 Rev 20: Nov Dan 4:1-37 Rev 21: Nov Dan 5:1-30 Rev 21:9-27 Dan 7:1-8:27 26 Nov Dan 6:1-28 Rev 22:1-21 Dan 9: Nov Is 1: Pet 1: Nov Is 2: Pet 1:13-25 Isaiah 3:1-4:6 29 Nov Is 5: Pet 2:1-12 Amos 1:1-9:15 30 Nov (St Andrew) Is 6:1-7:9 1 Pet 2:13-25 ATTENDANCE STATISTICS October 4 October 11 8: : : :45 78 Communion 114 Communion 111 Bible Study 37 Bible Study 28 October 18 October 25 8: : : Communion 97 Communion 149 Bible Study 26 Bible Study 36 FINANCIAL STATISTICS October 4 $6,126 October 11 $5,068 October 18 $4,299 October 25 $5,078 Page 9
