Mt. Hope Lutheran Church and Child Development Center Spirit of Hope Our Vision is to reach our friends and neighbors with the truth, love, and hope of Jesus Christ while growing as His disciples", 3601 West Old Shakopee Road * Bloomington, MN * * If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9 Dear friends and members of Mt Hope, As I am writing this we are enjoying another very successful VBS and anticipating about 100 children. Many thanks to Melanie, Dave and Fran Wallin, Kayla and many others for getting us ready with the most elaborate VBS set ever. These are exciting times for us here at Mt Hope and ministering to children and their families is one of the ministries we are excelling in through our Sunday school, KidsZone, Nursery, CDC, One Way Youth and now VBS. Thank you to all who help and serve in these vital ministry areas. I once read a piece titled, Kid s Instructions for Life. Some of these are very insightful. Rocky, age 9 Wear a hat when feeding seagulls. Stephanie, age 8 Sleep in your clothes so you ll be dressed in the morning. Carol, age 9 Never ask for anything that costs more than $5 when your parents are doing taxes. Alyesha, age 13 When you get a bad grade in school, show it to your mom when she s on the phone. Laura, age 13 Never baptize your cat. Those are all pretty good bits of advice. We all need common sense advice at times and this is especially true when we are struggling to understand some of the mysteries of life. Sometimes we are confronted with questions that none of us can fully explain. For example, why do some people suffer more than others? How can God be three and yet One? How could the Babe of Bethlehem be at the same time Almighty God? Etc. While there is much we cannot understand, God s Word shares with us everything we need to know. Every Christian regardless how brilliant or humble has been led by the Holy Spirit to Continued on page 2

Continued from page 1 believe that Jesus came into our world, lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, rose from the dead to rule eternally and prepare for us a place in heaven. In the meantime the Holy Spirit assures us that God is always with us. Fortunately, we are not saved by how much we know. We are saved by what Christ has done for us. In other words we live by faith. Living by faith is staking our lives on the belief that what we know about Jesus is enough to sustain in this world and in the world to come. For it s there that we discover and understand just how much God loves you and me. May this Good News sustain and enrich us not only through the summer but onto eternity. God love you, Pastor Dan Honoring the Men and Women of Our Armed Forces Sunday, July 7. we will once again honor the brave men and women who have and are serving in the Armed Forces with our patriotic worship saluting each branch of our Armed Forces. We would like to have as many pictures of our members and former members who served in the service in order to have video display of them. Please drop off your picture or the picture of a loved one in uniform or put it in Pastor Dan s mailbox. 4 Child Development Center News The summer program is in full swing. More than fifty students will be spending time at Mount Hope during their vacation from school. Several of our preschool families have chosen to continue their child s preschool experience right through the summer months. Many of the CDC families attended Mount Hope s Vacation Bible School during June. It was wonderful to see them connect further with Mount Hope s congregation. We are singing the VBS songs daily! We said good-bye to Jera Seigars, one of our Pre Kindergarten teachers, at the end of May. She did a wonderful job preparing her group of children for Kindergarten. Two new employees joined the staff for the summer. Alicia Miller is a graduate student at the U of MN. She will be working with our Pre Kindergarten students four days a week. Karin Eliason will be working five mornings a week with our school age students. Three of our staff celebrated their graduation from High School in June. We are very proud of them all. Erin Loughrey, Joshua Cornes and Kevin Woebke The enrollment numbers for the fall are looking great. The Pre Kindergarten room is full. The Preschool program for the 3 years is almost half full, which is wonderful for this time of year. On August 22, we will hold our Back-to-School Night for the school year. Please pray that God continues to bless our staff, families and program. Blessings, Kimberly Woebke, Director Heather Bielec, Lead Teacher ex15 Wish List Items: napkins and glue sticks Page 4

Vaca%on Bible School was June It was an amazing week full of laughter, smiles, love, and GOD!!!! Every day we began with a family dinner where we served over 90 hungry people each night!!! VBS started every night at 6 p.m. in the sanctuary where they sang and danced praises to our Lord. Then crews traveled to four different sta%ons: Epic Bible Adventures, Chadder s Royal Theatre, Imagina>on Sta>on, and Tournament Games. We closed each night with more singing and dancing. Every day the students learned a Bible point that was re- emphasized during all the different sta%ons. Day 1: Bible Point: God s love helps us stand strong. Bible Verse: I love you, Lord; you are my strength. (Psalm 18:1) Bible Story: David writes about God s love. Day 2: Bible Point: Prayer helps us stand strong. Bible Verse: "Don t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything." (Philippians 4:6) Bible Story: Nehemiah perseveres to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem. (Nehemiah 1 6) Day 3: Bible Point: Trus%ng God helps us stand strong. Bible Verse: "Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal Rock." (Isaiah 26:4) Bible Story: Jesus dies and comes back to life. (Luke 22:39 24:12) Day 4: Bible Point: The Bible helps us stand strong. Bible Verse: "Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path." (Psalm 119:105) Bible Story: King Josiah follows God s way. (2 Kings 22:1 23:23) Words cannot express how thankful I am for everyone s hard work to make this VBS a huge success!!! We had over 60 children come through our doors on fire for our Lord!!! None of that would have been possible without every person who helped out!!! You all made a big difference!!! Love, Melanie Appelquist, Your VBS Director See page 6 for list of VBS Helpers Page 5

July/August Mt. Hope Outreach Team What is the Outreach Team and who is on it? There has been some buzz around church lately, as we ve begun sponsoring outreach events, and the time has come to officially introduce ourselves! As Chairperson of the team, I will be putting an article in each newsletter to inform you of upcoming activities. We want to encourage all our members to participate in fulfilling the Great Commission and have fun in reaching out to our community! After completing our two year Missional Formational process, it s time to put all of that information to work! It is a heartfelt vision of one of our members; Ken Sanville, to start a team that will focus on equipping us for outreach. This effort will also unify us as members of Mt. Hope in being Jesus hands and feet. We have brought together many gifted and outreach-minded members to brainstorm ideas in reaching the unchurched in our area. We want everyone to know Jesus and go to heaven! Recently our team heard a presentation from Joni and Friends; an organization which helps churches connect with people affected by disabilities. This would be a new ministry opportunity for us and we are exploring various ways in which we can become involved. The team also heard from a former homeless teen who recently graduated from CSP. According to the Bloomington Police Department, homeless teenagers is a major concern for our community. Here too we are looking at opportunities we can be supportive in meeting some of their needs. Most recently, our team met with all of the ushers and greeters that have faithfully welcomed visitors into Mt. Hope and want to encourage families to also serve as greeters and ushers. What is the next event to welcome our neighbors? We are excited to sponsor an old f fashioned Pig Roast on Friday, July 26 th, from 5-7:30 p.m. This will be a wonderful opportunity for our members to invite unchurched friends and neighbors for a great time of food and fellowship! For only $10, ages 11 and up can enjoy a delicious pork dinner, including a baked potato, sweet corn, coleslaw, a dinner roll and bars. Children three and under are free, with 4-10 year olds eating for only $7. Watch for tickets to go on sale soon---buy early as they will be $11.00 at the door! As with any large production, many volunteers will be needed to make this a success, so please talk to any of our outreach team if you would like to help. The Saturday morning men s Bible study will also be assisting, and we appreciate their willingness to make this a fun outreach moment. Thanks to all of our members who purchased witness wear t-shirts recently as this will be one of the many tools we will be using to introduce our community to Mt. Hope! In August, we will be also selling beautiful water bottles with our new logo on it: Mt. Hope---The church with a big heart, including a red heart. You will be seeing more of this logo, including our new bus bench on the corner! I would like to thank our team members who have been meeting since last October & have dedicated much time & effort to building up awareness of God s mission for all of us. Here are your Outreach Team members: Steve and Vicki Schmidt, Fran Wallin, Jennifer Adamek, Melanie Appelquist, Kayla Kuhlman Paul Killam, Carl Fox, Pastor Dan, and Kathy Sundseth. Let s get excited about bringing the love of Jesus Christ to our Bloomington neighbors and join with us in growing Mt. Hope! Blessings, Dianne Ritter, Chairperson Page 8

DAILY READINGS for JULY The following Bible passages are from the new daily Lectionary (a list of assigned readings.) Following an historic practice, this Lectionary present a continuous reading through the books of the Bible, often associating certain books with particular seasons of the church year (e.g., reading Isaiah during Advent). Under this plan, nearly all of the New Testament and approximately one-third of the Old Testament is read each year. Two readings of verses each are provided for each day, one from the Old Testament, the other from the New. Occasionally, a third optional reading is listed, providing parallel readings. 1 July Josh 6:6 27 Acts 10: July Josh 7:1 26 Acts 10: July Josh 8:1 28 Acts 11: July Josh 10:1 25 Acts 11:19 30 Josh 10:28 22:34 5 July Josh 23:1 16 Acts 12: July Josh 24:1 31 Acts 13:1 12 Judg 1: July Judg 2:6 23 Acts 13: July Judg 3:7 31 Acts 13: July Judg 4:1 24 Acts 14:1 18 Judg 5: July Judg 6:1 24 Acts 14:19 15:5 11 July Judg 6:25 40 Acts 15: July Judg 7:1 23 Gal 1:1 24 Judg 7:24 12:15 13 July Judg 13:1 25 Gal 2:1 21 Ruth 1:1 4:22 14 July Judg 14:1 20 Gal 3: July Judg 15:1 16:3 Gal 3:23 4:11 16 July Judg 16:4 30 Gal 4:12 31 Judg 17:1 21:25 17 July 1 Sam 1:1 20 Gal 5: July 1 Sam 1:21 2:17 Gal 6: July 1 Sam 2:18 36 Acts 15: July 1 Sam 3:1 21 Acts 16: July 1 Sam 4:1 22 Acts 16:23 40 Acts 17: July 1 Sam 5:1 6:3, Acts 18:1 11, July 1 Sam 6:19 7:17 Acts 19:1 22 Acts 19:23 21:14 24 July 1 Sam 8:1 22 Acts 21: July 1 Sam 9:1 27 Acts 21:37 22:16 26 July 1 Sam 10:1 27 Acts 22: July 1 Sam 12:1 25 Acts 22:30 23:11 28 July 1 Sam 13:1 18 Acts 23: July 1 Sam 14:47 15:9 Acts 24: July 1 Sam 15:10 35 Acts 24:24 25:12 31 July 1 Sam 16:1 23 Acts 25:13 27 Page 10
