1 Spirit of Hope Newsletter of Mount Hope Lutheran Church Preschool and Childcare August 2017 Pastor s Notes A sower went out to sow his seed and as he sowed. Some fell by the wayside; and it was trampled down, and the birds of the air devoured it. Some fell on rock; and as soon it sprang up it withered away because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it. But others fell on good ground, sprang up, and yielded a crop a hundred-fold. Luke 8:5-8a Dear friends and members of Mt Hope, Our dear Lord Jesus Christ taught many profound lessons through parables. He took that which was ordinary and common place to teach great spiritual truths. In the parable of the sower Jesus indicates that the four types of soil represent four different kinds of human hearts. And so as in the physical world so also in the spiritual realm; if one expects a harvest one must have the proper seed to plant. Seeds have great power residing within them. God s Word is like a seed. God s Word has the power to change hearts and lives. From a single Bible can come a whole community of converts with far reaching influence and power to the world around them. Seeds however can be spoiled and ruined. Likewise false doctrine can also corrupt God s sacred message of His love and forgiveness through faith in Christ. Of course a seed is of little value left enclosed in a package. It can only do its job when properly planted in the soil. Similarly a closed Bible is powerless to save. So, agriculturally and spiritually, St Paul reminds us, He that sows sparingly shall also reap sparingly. We must never become discouraged by those who do not respond to the Good News of the Gospel, but rather rejoice with those who do. Our ministry in Jesus name is to sow the seed of God s Kingdom and God will give the increase. A growing church is a sowing church. By God s grace we have the divine seed and the fields before us. May God s Spirit encourage us to scatter the precious seeds of the Kingdom. God love you, Pastor Dan A Case for Christ is Coming!
2 Jesus All-Stars Sunday School Fran Wallin As we wrapped up our study of the Believe series, it was obvious that in covering the Fruit of the Spirit Faithfulness, Kindness, Gentleness, and the like much of what the children learned will be modeled as they obey the Second Greatest Commandment as given by Christ: Love your neighbor as yourself. What appeared most interesting is that even at their young ages, the children are aware of how to treat friends, neighbors, and family members. Additionally, they shared how they also wish to be treated and spoken to. This was very evident during our round-table activities when they would share something that may have happened with a friend or classmate. They came to understand that not only actions, but words too can either encourage and build up or hurt and tear down. This got me to thinking that if our kids possess the positive qualities we want them to have, they will seek out friends and others with the same qualities. More so, as they grow and mature, they will demonstrate them also. Children s Ministry We know that the friends our kids choose will impact them for the rest of their lives. Tricia Goyer, from faith+family ministry, lists character qualities that are important to seek out and nurture in our kids. I m proud to say that four of these qualities were recognized by our Sunday school class: Truthfulness, Kindness, Joy, and Sharing. As we seek out these qualities and continue to encourage them in our children, their friendships are truly off to a good start. ************** Several of our families marched alongside the Mt Hope float in the Richfield July 4 th Parade. SERVANT EVENT 2017 On June25 th -30 th Drew Adamek, Sam Killam, Vance Melbostad, Emily Woodhall, Mark and Melanie Appelquist went to Lutheran Island Camp for a servant event. It was an amazing week in God s Creation. The two main projects worked on were a boardwalk and horse shelter. They also participated in other activities such as square dancing, large group games, and skit night. Please take a minute to read a couple of the essays about the event from the youth that attended. Two more essays will be included in the September newsletter. On September 24 th One Way Youth would like to invite members and friends of Mount Hope to a Thank You Reception at 9:30 am. The youth who attended the Servant Event and Confirmation Camp will be sharing their experiences. Thank you so much members of Mount Hope for all your support. This would not be possible without you.
4 Servant Event Essays Two more essays will be featured in the September Newsletter Drew Adamek This was my third servant event and it remains something that I look forward to in the summer. During this year s camp, we did two main projects: putting boards down on the boardwalk at the ranch and building a horse shelter. During the building of the shelter, some of us had to go into the horse enclosure to get reference pictures. We thought this would be fun until Sam and I ran into an aggressive horse that we had to run from. However, we came back later and enjoyed our time with the less aggressive horses. I also enjoyed our trip to Granny s Pantry where I got a two-scoop waffle cone. While the cone did end up breaking due to the large amount of ice cream inside, I caught this broken piece and enjoyed the rest of my ice cream in a bowl. While I had a lot of fun, I also learned a lot. I learned that it is important to start and finish a job by making sure your part is done the best that you can do first. After this, you can focus on other parts of the job. I also learned that God has my future all planned out and I can only do my best to fulfil it. Finally, I learned that, through our work on the boardwalk, that I am basically a professional at using a corded drill, just ask Mark. Lastly, I want to thank you. None of this would have been possible without your support. This support comes in the form of financial aid, emotional guidance, and spiritually through prayer. The congregation supports the youth through all of these means, so I want to thank them. Without this support, we would not be able to do cool things like this servant event and so I ask that you continue this support. Emily Woodhall My final week of camp was one of the best ones yet. On the first full day, we did square dancing on the basketball court. It is fun to be able to dance like a little kid and be able to have a fun start to the week. Also on the first day we played basketball during free time and I beat the boys. We also did some work projects during the day. We started with putting boards onto a boardwalk and switched to building a horse shelter. One of the best things about our work projects was how close we were to the horses. We went and petted the horses a few times throughout the week. On the final night of camp, there is a skit night. Our skit went well, despite the lack of planning. I loved camp and I hope that this year will not be my final year. This year, the counselors taught us about the rock and to build our house on a solid foundation. We also had a private bible study with the other servant event groups. There, we learned about being an echo. No matter how small or unworthy we feel in the world, God will use us to be an echo because everyone can reach different people. With the work projects, I learned the difference between a drill and screw gun. Through the fun, I learned that dancing can be competitive. Camp is such an amazing experience and it would not be possible without all of the support we get. We are able to help the camp and learn how to spread God s word. Thank you for allowing us to have this experience together and for supporting us as we grow in God s word. This is the final time I will attend camp as a camper and the past seven years of camp have been wonderful. Thank you for giving me those seven years filled with memories that I will remember for a lifetime.

Stewardship Corner Luke 16:8 For the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light. Money is a tool that can be used for good or wicked purposes. Often unbelievers show more shrewdness in this than we Christians. If we really believe all that stuff we say in the Creed every Sunday won t that affect how we use our money? 7
