1 Spirit of Hope The Newsletter of Mount Hope Lutheran Church Pastor s Notes Jesus said: Behold, I make all things new. Revelation 21:5 June 2015 Dear Friends and Members of Mount Hope, The newness and freshness of this time of the year is so startling. We smell the fresh aromas of flowers in bloom. The lilacs are especially aromatic this year. The buds on the trees and the green grass all testify to the fact that life is becoming new all around us. That same freshness and excitement that we see in nature can also be experienced in our everyday lives as Jesus proclaimed in the verse above. But St Paul also wrote that every person in Christ is a new creation. What a joy and blessing to have this newness of life through God s grace and mercy. All too often we can feel tired, old and worn out. And when we reflect upon our sins and shortcomings in life we can feel worthless, worn down and worn out. Yet Christ s death for us upon the cross and His glorious resurrection from the grave helps us to put the old behind and allow the new to enter. With the invigorating feeling of new life we can move to greater lives of service to Christ Who first loved us and gave His life for us. If you have ever had a cold or the flu, remember how great it was to get over it and be well again? (Continued on page 9)

2 Children s Ministry Jesus All Stars Sunday School ALREADY? Sunday, May 17, marked the end of the regular Sunday school season (already). Everyone engaged in our lesson, with laughs and giggles filling the room as all enjoyed our end of the year party. What a wonderful end to a Spirit-filled season. Certificates of completion were presented to each student with special congratulations to Lea Fox and Olivia Woebke who were promoted to the Junior High Class. Congratulations girls! Kids Zone, our summer program, is already in the making. We are set to begin on May 31 st at 9:30 a.m. in the purple classroom. Once again we are following along with the congregational study entitled: Family 101 Back to the Basics. God in His infinite wisdom has provided us with His design for families. Each week the children will learn about a part of this design by exploring different Bible verses and stories. And, of course, we ll celebrate our dads too. I once read that the success of a father determines the success of the family. Thinking back to my own dad, I realized what a pivotal role he played in our family. Knowing God has a plan for dads, I thought I d share the following: 1. Father s are commanded to teach their children the commands of the Lord. (Deut.6:6-9) 2. Fathers are to give direction to their children. Like arrows in a quiver, fathers are to do their best to aim their children in the right direction. (Psalms127:3-5) 3. Fathers are to be fathers like God our Father. Don t provoke, rather be just, fair, and never over-demanding. (Ephesians 6:4) 4. Fathers need to turn their hearts to their children. In other words, dads need to spend time with their kids. (Malachi 4:6) 5. A father s discipline is his love. Loving discipline helps the child grow to respect others and to live in obedience in society. (Hebrews12:5-11 & Proverbs 3:10-11) It s no secret then, that Christian fathers are really instruments in God s hands. HAPPY FATHER S DAY Francine Wallin, Director Jesus All Stars Sunday School JAM (Jesus and Me) JAM (Jesus and Me) will be having Messy Afternoon at Mount Hope Lutheran Church on June 14 th Noon- 3:00 p.m. Please wear clothes that you can get very messy!!! This event is open to 3 rd -5 th grade students. Friends are welcome to attend! This event is free!!! If you have any questions please contact Melanie Appelquist at youth@mt-hope.org or Child Development Center The Spring Musicals were a hit, and the children did a wonderful job. They sang, danced, acted and recited passages. The opportunity to perform is very special, and helps build confidence. Many of the children were able to invite grandparents and aunts and uncles, so we had a full house at both programs. The children were also able to give a tour of the new classrooms to their families. Thank you so much to the Women of Hope for again providing treats for everyone. On Jun0e 1, a new group of preschoolers will be starting at the Center. We are one of just a few places in the area to offer a morning preschool program during the summer months. I am also pleased to report that many of our new students are enrolling based on referrals from current families. Mrs. Charlotte Penn will be joining the staff on June 15. She accepted the Call to be a full-time teacher at the Center. The staff is very excited to meet her and also to be fullystaffed. Many of our employees have been putting in extra hours during this transition time. The new classrooms are beautiful and very functional. If you have not taken a walk through the renovated wing, please do so. Kim Woebke, CDC Director

Mark and Susan Moss, have been called to work in Africa with the LCMS West and Central African area of operations. He is part of a team of theological educators and church planters based in Accra. This team will serve churches and seminaries in the West African countries of Benin, Burkina Faso, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Togo. Mark is a retired LCMS Army Chaplain who has served the Army s Soldiers twenty years and thru two combat tours in Iraq. Before their time in the Army, Mark and Susan were also LBT missionaries who served for three years in Sierra Leone, West Africa, where Mark was the Bible Translation Supervisor for the Limba project. He worked on the Limba Language Project in Northern Sierra Leone. He conducted a language survey and evaluated the existing Limba NT in order to see if it could be used for all 14 Limba dialects or if it needed revisions and updating. The Mosses have four adult children; Jeremiah, Jonathan, Marie, and Nathan. Jon is married to Jennifer (nee Marsh) and Marie is married to Graig Lumives. All four children have served either in the active duty military (Army and Air Force) or with the Department of Defense. Mark and Susan are seeking to develop a base of prayer and financial partnership among LCMS churches, church auxiliaries, and individuals who will share with them in God s Gospel Ministry and Mission in West/Central Africa. Prayer Requests: Pray that God would use them as His instruments to work effectively with the National Churches of West and Central Africa to help bring the Gospel message of salvation in Christ to the people. Please pray that God would enable them to build mission partnerships so that congregations, groups and individuals could share with us in this Gospel ministry and mission

We want to go. We want to do. We want to get after it etc. In much the same way God has cured us and healed us and given us new life so that we might be motivated to be about lives of service to Him as we serve others. As everything is coming to life around us we are reminded that life can become new within us too. St Paul wrote, Just as Christ was raised from the dead to the glory of God the Father so you too might walk in newness of life. With excitement of new life through Christ s resurrection may we each live with joy and vitality to serve Him now and forever. God love you, Pastor Dan 9
