1 Monthly Newsletter of Mount Hope Lutheran Church Spirit of Hope January 2016 From the Pastor Happy New Year! I was glad when they said to me, Let us go to the house of the Lord! Psalm 122:1 Dear friends and members of Mt Hope, From David s Psalm above, the word glad in the Hebrew literally means to cause to rejoice. In spite of all the turmoil and disappointments from the past year we can approach this New Year with hope and confidence because God is in control and that gives us a reason to rejoice. Having the opportunities to gather together as God s people for worship and to hear the Word of God also gives us cause to rejoice. So as we begin the New Year of 2016, I m excited to share with you something new for us here at Mt Hope; Thirty Three Interesting Chapters of the Bible. Each month it is our plan to share with everyone a particular chapter of the Bible for each week during the month. On Sunday, as we gather for worship; the service, the message, etc. will focus on the main theme from that chapter. We are asking everyone to read through the assigned chapter each week ahead of worship to familiarize ourselves with the content. For January the chapters will be: Week Chapter Main Theme January 3 Luke 2:41-52 When Jesus was 12 years old January 10 Luke 3 John baptizes Jesus January 17 Food for the Poor Sunday with Dr John Buuck January 24 Mark 6 Feeding of the 5,000 January 31 Luke 7 Widow of Nain s son I m looking forward to growing with you in our faith for God love you, Pastor Dan

She will be speaking on Prayer. She has been involved in both the publishing world and the prayer movement. It s her heart s desire to encourage people to seek God more diligently and to trust Him more fully. A light breakfast/brunch will be served followed by a business meeting. Sunday Morning I looked, and there was a great crowd-no one could count all the people! They were from every nation, tribe, people and language...they cried out in one voice our salvation comes from our God, who sits on the throne and from the Lamb! Rev. 7:9-10 (TEV) Our adult Bible class is offered between the early and late worship services, starting at 9:35 a.m. in the sanctuary. Pastor Dan leads this study on the last book of the bible, the book of Revelation. We will not have class on Sunday: Sunday, January 3 rd.

3 Financials "The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God." (Philippians 4:5-6 ESV). Wouldn't you like to be free from worry and anxiety? Isn't it worry and anxiety that often keep us from living the generous life God has called us to? St. Paul contrasts anxiety with prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving in making our requests known to God. In other words, when you are tempted to anxiety and worry: pray to the Lord with a thankful heart and pour out your supplications before Him. Congregational Voter s Meeting Monday, January 25 at 6:30 PM New Life Family Services Baby Shower In honor of Right to Life Sunday, January 17 th we will be collecting new and gently used baby clothes for moms & dads who seek help during an unplanned pregnancy at New Life Family Services in Richfield. New Life offers practical and spiritual counsel and provides education and support with the hope each client will make a life-affirming decision for their unborn child. We can help this organization by placing your donations in the crib set up in the entryway from January 2 nd until the 18 th at which time the items will be taken to New Life Family Services in Richfield. 5 Sunday School re-soul-utions Thinking back a year ago, how well did you do with those resolutions? You know the diet, the exercise program, or more time engaged in family devotions. If you are like me, there is definitely room for improvement. I soon came to realize how often our children imitate many of our habits the way we sit, the way we talk, the way we act, or the way we use our Bible. That being said, I wanted to share this piece. I m sure many of you have seen it before, and I m sorry I cannot give the source, but it did speak to me and hopefully will to all who are reading this. It s entitled: Your Bible vs. Your Cell Phone. Ever wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phone? What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets? What if we flipped through it several times a day? What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it? What if we used it to receive messages from the text? What if we treated it like we couldn t live without it? What if we gave it to kids as a gift? What if we used it when we traveled? (We d be asked to deplane.) What if we used it in case of an emergency? This is something to make you go hmm where is my Bible? Oh, and one more thing, unlike our cell phone, we don t have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill. Makes you stop and think where are my priorities? And no dropped calls! When Jesus died on the cross, He was sending a text directly to you! [Emphasis added] The All-Stars did a great job sharing the Christmas Story through their presentation Christmas in Our Jammies. So proud of their accomplishment, they are always excited to share this story with family and friends. Another proud accomplishment was fulfilling their pledge of $300 to the building fund. The last portion of their pledge was presented to Pastor Dan on December 13. It is always a joy to watch these children grow and demonstrate their Christian values. We re looking forward to what 2016 will bring. Happy New Year! Fran Wallin, Director Children s Sunday School JAM January 17 th JAM will be having a Movie Day in the purple room at Mount Hope from noon-3 p.m. This event is open to 3 rd -5 th Graders. Friends are welcome to attend. If you would like to provide lunch that day please contact Melanie. If you have any questions please contact Melanie at youth@mt-hope.org or

The addition of the playhouse made for some very exciting days outside. A big thank you to the group of volunteers who worked on the assembly. We truly appreciate your willingness to help! Registration for the coming school year opens to our current families in January. We will open up registration to the general public the first Monday in February. The goal is to have four preschool classes running from 9:00-12:00 starting in September. Informational postcards are available on the CDC hallway countertop. If you have friends or neighbors looking for quality Christian preschool or child care, please send them our way. The last week of January is National Lutheran Schools Week. What a joy that Mount Hope can celebrate the value of education while serving over fifty neighborhood families. Thank you from the staff for your continued support of the preschool and child care programs. Kim Woebke, CDC Director New Playground Playhouse
