November 2016 Monthly Newsletter of Mount Hope Lutheran Church Spirit of Hope From the Pastor s Desk Let us be Thankful! Since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe. Hebrews 12:28 Dear friends and members of Mount Hope, Here we are in the month of November. In this season of Thanksgiving we tend to thank God for all His goodness to us. But the greatest thanksgiving we could possibly offer our Lord is in responding to His goodness; offering God a life of bountiful and faithful worship, bountiful growing in our faith and bountifully living for Him Who has given so bountifully to us. We have been blessed with an abundance of both physical and spiritual blessings. And there s nothing wrong with abundance per se. We tend to find comfort in abundance. People feel comfortable in their abundance of clothes and don t have wash and dry the same things over and over. People feel comfortable when there is food in the pantry or when there is abundance in the checkbook, savings account or investments. The only thing that might be wrong in having abundance might be in our attitude. If we think e.g. that we accumulated everything, we become the god of our life. If we think we need abundance for our safety and security then we lack a trust and confidence in God to care for us and supply our needs. In Paul s letter to the Corinthians we read how he was amazed at the Christians living in Macedonia because of their giving: they gave out of their poverty and not from abundance. What a unique thought: abundance in giving, not in keeping. And the reason those poor folks in Macedonia were able to give in such abundance, Paul tells us, first they gave themselves to the Lord. So as we take the time to thank God for all His blessings toward us, let us in faith be thankful and give ourselves first to the Lord as well. Please join us for our festive Thanksgiving Eve worship; Wednesday evening, November 23 at 6:30 p.m. Let us be thankful!

Children s Ministry In All Things Watching TV the other night, I was taken by a commercial for St. Jude s Children s Hospital. It brought back memories from my days as a Speech Pathologist at the children s hospital in my hometown. As I watched children with one arm, no arms, or one leg doing simple tasks such as braiding hair, tying shoelaces, or walking, it made me realize how often we can take even the simplest of tasks for granted, let alone life itself. With so much to be grateful for and the fact that Thanksgiving, which is only a few weeks away, leads to one of the greatest events for all Christians, I was also saddened to think that it has become the in-between holiday the one between Halloween and Christmas. This being said, I d like to share some things I am thankful for. I m thankful for: A country that remains the land of the free and home of the brave; Family, friends and health; A loving husband and daughter; A Christian community that stands on Biblical principles; The privilege to disciple to children in our Sunday school classes; The parents and congregation who support our children s ministry program; A God, who in His mercy and grace, forgives me my sins and call me His daughter. To all of you from the Jesus All-Stars HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Francine Wallin, Jesus All-Stars, Sunday School Coats for Kids delivery All-Stars sing on Dedication Sunday As a result of your generosity, 42 more adults and children will be warmer this winter. The All-Stars and our Preschool and Child Care Center thank you for joining in our Coats for Kids campaign. JAM (Jesus and Me) will be having a movie party at Mount Hope on November 20 th from noon- 3:00p.m. This event is open to 3 rd -5 th grade students. Friends are welcome to attend! If you have any questions please contact Melanie Appelquist at youth@mt-hope.org or
Mt. Hope s Prayer Ministry Since the early 1970 s, a small group of prayer warriors have met at Mount Hope to pray for the needs of the church and to ask God for His help and guidance as we approach the future. Many of you pray at home, but this weekly meeting is an opportunity to be with others who believe in the power of prayer and wish to pray for those in need. If you should decide to come, bring only your faith in God, your thankful heart and your wish to do something good for others. The Prayer Group meets at 9 a.m. every Wednesday in the church library. See you there. Preschool and Childcare News October was a wonderful month at the Center. We hosted Parent-Teacher Conferences over MEA break. Teachers were able to spend time getting to know our families better and setting goals for the children. The children also had their pictures taken by Picture Time Studios. During November the children at the Center will be celebrating Book Week. The children will have numerous opportunities to dress up as book characters and to share the books they love with their classmates. The wonderful storytellers from WonderWeavers will also be in to lead an assembly that week. Believe it or not, the children have already begun preparing for their Christmas program. Learning to play the hand bells can be a long process. Their enthusiasm is uplifting. As the teachers prepare for the program, they are so appreciative to be able to use the new sanctuary. Our chapel offerings this year are again being donated to Heifer International. We are purchasing trees for families in need around the world. Our goal is to bring in $120, and we are more than half way to our goal. Happy Thanksgiving. We are thankful for you! Kim Woebke, Director
Sunday Bible Study 9:35 a.m. Believe Think, Act, and Believe like Jesus Believe is the Bible study and sermon series that s a follow-up to The Story which we completed last year. In the first 10 sessions; Think like Jesus, we will explore the basic core beliefs of Christianity. In the next 10 sessions; Act like Jesus, we will put those beliefs into practice. In the final 10 sessions: Be like Jesus, we will explore the virtues of becoming like Jesus. During November, the Believe Bible study will take place on the 20 th and 27 th. Stewardship Sundays On Sunday, November 6 th and 13 th all Sunday morning Bible Study groups will meet together in the Fellowship Hall for a Stewardship study led by Pastor Dan and Glenn Thiel. Lifelight Bible Study Our Thursday morning Bible Class is offered at 10 a.m. This fall we will be studying the Parables of the Bible. Candy Frein conducts the class. Anyone who is not currently registered and would be interested in joining us, please call Harriet Buelow at In-Home Bible Study In the month of November our study will look at two women-one who struggled for months against postpartum depression, yet she waited on the Lord. What does it mean to wait on the Lord? Another woman casts her anxiety over losing her home to hurricane Katrina to God and trusts that God will, indeed, provide for her every need. This devotional tells what God is doing in the lives of real women today and how we can apply these principles to our own lives. You are encouraged to meet at Jennifer Adamek s at 9117 Yukon Ave S, Bloomington on Tuesdays, November 1 st & November 15 th at 6:30 pm. If you have any questions about this study, please contact Jennifer Adamek at
Office Changes Candy Frein and Kim Woebke are settling into their new roles in the church office. Kim will be in the main office Monday through Wednesday and during Bible Study on Thursday mornings. Candy will be in on Thursdays and Fridays. They are just finishing up the division of duties. Please be patient as they work through these first few months with new responsibilities. Access to the Building With the near completion of the construction project, just a few more changes will be taking place. Everyone entering the building should enter through the main front door. The east side door will also be available for entrance on Sunday mornings. The kitchen door will now be locked at all times, and the west door in the play space will not be accessible once the new exit-only gates are installed on the play space fencing. Having everyone enter through the front door during the work week provides greater security for the children and staff. Stewardship Corner Fall Stewardship Emphasis Historically at our September Voter s meeting each year a new operating budget for the coming year is adopted. Then in November we usually set aside a few Sundays to emphasize how God desires us to manage the gifts He has entrusted to us; our time, treasures and talents. This year our special Stewardship Sundays will be November 6 th and 13 th under the theme: Excel in the Grace of Giving. I will be sharing a special message each of those Sundays as we briefly suspend our Believe series those two weeks. On Sunday November 20 th as we resume the Believe series, we will ask all our members to dedicate their giving intentions to the Lord for the New Year of 2017 as part of the worship service. Glenn Thiel and I will be team teaching a joint Bible study on those first two Sundays in November; combining all classes together in the Fellowship Hall. What an exciting time for us here at Mount Hope as we see how God will use us to extend His Kingdom as we seek to fulfill God s mission and our vision all to His glory. I look forward to sharing my personal faith stewardship journey with you. God love you, Pastor Dan Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God s will for you in Christ Jesus. I Thessalonians 5:18

This meeting room is handicapped accessible and we invite new members. This month's book is "The Snow Child" by Eowyn Ivey.Hooray! The library is up and running even though we are still in the process of shelving new books. Now that we have made space by selling older items at the Bazaar, please bring your FAVORITE books to share with others. "Why have a library?" one of our older members asked. This is a wonderful service the book club provides for our busy and less mobile members and neighbors. We preselect all our titles to reflect our Christian values and to be enjoyable. Our books are all donated so you do not need to check them out or ask permission to use the library. All our books are being stickered with Mount Hope's name so that they find their way home again. So please check out our new titles and enjoy reading!..
