We welcome to the Lord's Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words "given and shed for you" forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given. AS WE GATHER Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it (Hebrews 2:1). These words from today s Epistle are spot-on. In a culture that is quickly drifting away from the values we once held sacred, it s imperative for us, as the people of God, to hold firmly to the Word we have heard. Today as we gather to listen to God s Word and receive His gifts of grace, we are drawn close to the Redeemer, who has given His life in exchange for ours. Only in our relationship with Christ will we ever be made complete members of His eternal kingdom, sons and daughters of our King. Once we see how our true identity is found in Jesus, we can better understand our unique roles in the relationships with one another that He has given to us. Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one s youth. Blessèd is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Collect for Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost Merciful Father, Your patience and loving-kindness toward us have no end. Grant that by Your Holy Spirit we may always think and do those things that are pleasing in Your sight; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. OLD TESTAMENT Genesis 2: (The Lord designs man and woman to find completion in each other.) 18 The LORD God said, It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him. 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. The battle between the old self in Adam and the new self in Christ is fought in the heart and mind of every Christian. Paul encourages us to put on the new man that is created in the image of God. Our sanctification, our growth in godliness, is a growth into God s image. We do this by keeping our eyes on Christ and imitating Him in everything: in love, in kindness, in self-giving generosity. 6

7 The Pewpoint THEME OF THE DAY Marriage Is a Sign that Manifests the Gospel of Christ and His Church Humanity is created in the image and likeness of God. It is not good that the man should be alone (Gen. 2:18). For the Lord Himself is a perfect communion of three Persons the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in one God. Therefore, the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs, which he made into a woman and brought to the man (Gen. 2:21 22). It is for this reason that a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh (Gen. 2:24; Mark 10:7). This great mystery of holy marriage signifies Christ Jesus, the incarnate Son of God, and His Bride, the Church. Divorce and all manner of adultery contradict and undermine this sign, and in doing so, they confess a false Christ and a false gospel. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate (Mark 10:9). In truth, Christ Jesus has atoned for all such sins, and He has perfected marriage in Himself through suffering, that He might bring many sons to glory in His resurrection (Heb. 2:8 10). 9 September 2018 Serving the Lord in Uganda News from the Schempfs Pastor Michael Schempf and Karen started sending out their monthly newsletter. If you didn t receive one and would like to be on their list please contact them or Nancy Kohlhoff and she will get that information to them to add. Will need Name and address. Also if you don t have and would like a copy there are some on the table in the narthex. On Thanksgiving Day we will offer our prayers of praise, thanksgiving and supplication before we participate in an annual feast surrounded by family and friends. We will enjoy a great deal of bounty; reflecting on the generosity of our heavenly Father Who has provided and continues to provide abundantly. Since 2011, Brookfield Lutheran Church and the South Wisconsin District have partnered together to provide a Thanksgiving meal for families in Milwaukee, Racine and Beloit. Individuals and congregations have shared some of 9

10 their bounty with others, giving with a thankful heart from the gifts they have received. Our goal this year is to touch the lives of 954 families with baskets containing a turkey, green beans, corn, rice, yams, stuffing, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and topping, dinner rolls and apple juice. The members of Brookfield Lutheran Church will assemble and deliver the baskets as they have since But they need partners to help in this annual day of sharing. Please consider being a partner as each basket costs approximately $30, and your generous financial gift will go a long way in sharing some of God s abundance with others. A financial donation of any size is appreciated and so are your prayers for the blessings of God upon this effort to share mercy and grace with others.
