4 THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Genesis 6:9-22; 7:24; 8:14-19 These are the descendants of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation; Noah walked with God. And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight, and the earth was filled with violence. And God saw that the earth was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted its ways upon the earth. And God said to Noah, "I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence because of them; now I am going to destroy them along with the earth. Make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. Make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above; and put the door of the ark in its side; make it with lower, second, and third decks. For my part, I am going to bring a flood of waters on the earth, to destroy from under heaven all flesh in which is the breath of life; everything that is on the earth shall die. But I will establish my covenant with you; and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you. And of every living thing, of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground according to its kind, two of every kind shall come in to you, to keep them alive. Also take with you every kind of food that is eaten, and store it up; and it shall serve as food for you and for them." Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him. And the waters swelled on the earth for one hundred fifty days. In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry. Then God said to Noah, "Go out of the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons' wives with you. Bring out with you every living thing that is with you of all flesh--birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth--so that they may abound on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth." So Noah went out with his sons and his wife and his sons' wives. And every animal, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out of the ark by families. PSALM 46 (The congregation responds with the words in italics.) God is our refuge and our strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns. The nations rage, dominions totter; God speaks, the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Israel is our refuge. Come, behold the works of the Lord, who has brought desolations on the earth; who makes wars cease to the end of the earth; who breaks the bow, shatters the spear; and burns the shields with fire. Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Israel is our refuge.

5 CHILDREN S MUSICAL The Sailor s Bible: The Story of Noah and the Great Flood Words by Tom Long Music by Allen Pote PROLOGUE Do What You Gotta Do Hey there Noah, what kind of feather-brain builds a boat and doesn t check the weathervane? There s no cloud in the clear blue sky. I think your God s left you high and dry. You may think we re some kind of oddity. Call us nuts, but here is where we gotta be. Buildin an ark out of gopher wood, paintin it with tar to seal it good. You gotta do what God wants you to stand for the things you know are true. Even if the whole world laughs at you, do what you gotta do! Hey there Noah, are you a simpleton? Is this ark supposed to be a temple? Then go praise God with a Sis boom bah. Meanwhile, we say: Ha ha ha! They can laugh, but we ll never mind the least, as we gather two of of ev ry kind of beast. Load those pairs walkin two by two, last of all loadin me and you! Then the sky grew dark and the wind blew cold. The ones that mocked didn t feel so bold. They raised a mighty cry of dread: when they remembered what Noah said: You gotta do what God wants you to stand for the things you know are true. Even if the whole world laughs at you, do what you gotta do. When Life Is a Zoo When the ark started rolling they learned the hard way, how a seasick hippo can spoil your day. The turtles refused to come out of their shells. The bloodhounds were sneezing because of the smells. The lovebirds were fighting; the doves were at war. A sow was complaining her mate was a bore. A porcupine mister was hurt by his miss when he got over-eager attempting a kiss. There was thunder and lightning all day and all night, till the laughing hyenas were crying with fright. The rain without ending was such an ordeal, a crocodile shed a few tears that were real. We should all love our neighbors; but I think it s rude how the lions were eyeing their neighbors as food. The antelope found what they thought was a hose, and got sick when they drank from the elephant s nose! The shellfish were selfish; the clams wouldn t talk. The slugs never cleaned up their slime when they walked. The black widow spider just smiled when she said she d not seen her husband since breakfast in bed. The boa constrictors got aches in their backs. The cabin for termites was showing some cracks. A spotted giraffe got a pain her throat. A nearsighted whale fell in love with the boat. When bad weather follows you day after day, the word of the Lord can be hard to obey. Yet in spite of their problems to God they stayed true. You ve got to trust God when your life is a zoo! The Promise The water receded, the world was restored. Noah knelt down and gave thanks to the Lord. Never again, God declared with a sign, will the waters destroy human kind. For this is my promise as wide as the sky, stronger than thunder and deep as the sea, that speaks to the hunger in ev ry heart s cry: you are my children and you belong to me. After the tempest and after the rain, after the trial that travels with pain, we see a light with a radiant hue, from the One who makes ev rything new. And just like the concert of colors above, we are brothers and sisters united in love. Together we sail through a dangerous night, till we shine with a heavenly light. For this is my promise as wide as the sky, stronger than thunder and deep as the sea, that speaks to the hunger in ev ry heart s cry: you are my loved ones; you are my song. You are my children; you will always belong to me. EPILOGUE CHORISTER RECOGNITION

6 THE PRAYERS (The congregation responds with the words in italics.) The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Keeper of Covenants, we lift our prayers to you. As you were with Noah, his wife, his family, and all the creatures of the ark, so you are with us and all your creation through the storms of life. We pray for the leaders throughout the world. Give them wisdom to guide their people in ways of justice, peace, and prosperity. We pray for our country and especially for those impoverished in our land of plenty. O God, who sets rainbows in the skies, We pray for the elderly even as society says to celebrate youth. We pray for the ill and for those who cannot afford health care. We pray for those who have lost loved ones, for those who suffer a void in their hearts and lives. We pray for the lonely, those in prison, those without families. We pray for children growing up in a world that fails them as it surrounds them with senseless violence. We pray for your creation, for both creatures and environment that make this world one of wonders. We pray for the special needs and concerns of this congregation [especially ], Now hear the petitions known only to ourselves

Music reprinted by permission under OneLicense.net A Thank you for serving in the Nursery Jeanine Gangloff, Hser Ku, Julie Nutter, and Tay Nay Sar. * The Congregation standing as each is able. The mission of Binkley Baptist Church is building compassionate and joyful community, freely exploring spiritual paths, and pursuing justice and peace in the way of Jesus. THE INVITATION TO CHRIST S TABLE Holy Communion is a sacred and central part of Christian worship. It is a holy act, in which we, individually and corporately, commune with the Loving God. We welcome all who desire a deepened relationship with Christ to the Communion table. From time to time, questions arise concerning the participation of young children in this congregation s service of Holy Communion. The Diaconate recognizes that two historic Baptist principles inform this decision. Baptists are set apart from many other Christian traditions by our practice of Believer s Baptism, which signifies full membership in the church. Traditionally, many Baptist churches encourage persons to receive the Communion bread and cup for the first time after they have been baptized. At the same time, our historic insistence on Soul Liberty reminds us that Baptists value and respect each believer s unique and personal relationship with God. The Diaconate thus recommends that all members of Binkley continue to deepen their understanding of the meaning of Holy Communion, and that families enter into a time of discernment concerning when their children are able to appreciate the sacred nature of Communion. We affirm the responsibility of all believers to determine whether and when they and their children will partake of the Communion elements as we all participate in the service of Communion. THE DISCRETIONARY FUND Today you are invited to make a special offering to the Pastor Discretionary Fund. This fund allows Binkley to support our church and community members who are in financial crisis. Earmark any checks Discretionary Fund in the item section. Envelopes are available in the chair racks.

11 Share your photos: We need your help illustrating life at Binkley Church and in Chapel Hill for the Transition Team s church profile and pastoral profile! These files will be used by the Search Committee to advertise for our new minister. We seek recent photos (since May 2015) that are images of the congregation, church user-groups, and the wider Chapel Hill community. We re looking for action shots with people. Post them before Wednesday, June 8 to the Binkley Facebook page, or them to tteam@binkleychurch.org. Share your gardening talents: Got a Green Thumb? Or just too many shoots on that airplane plant or your hen and chicks? Now is a good time to root those shoots so they will be strong plants to donate and sell at the Binkley Yard Sale. As you are gardening this spring, round up duplicates or extra pots, garden hoses, trowels, rakes, and such. Put them aside for our sale in August. Many thanks! Yard Sale Proceeds: Binkley s share of this year s Yard Sale will be divided between Family Success Alliance and Eyes, Ears, Nose and Paws. Eyes, Ears, Nose and Paws is an organization which trains dogs to assist persons with mobility or health issues. Dogs are trained by prison inmates so that the program benefits both inmatetrainers and the people receiving service dogs. The hope is that there will be enough money to open another dog training site at a second prison. Family Success Alliance is a consortium of local charitable and governmental agencies which is focusing its programs on two areas of Orange County where families live on incomes below the county average. Family Success Alliance proposes to use its share of Yard Sale proceeds to support the Kindergarten Readiness program and to fund children s savings accounts for college. Research shows that establishing children s savings accounts leads the participating children to look forward to and begin to proactively plan for their future, which in turn improves their academic achievement. In short, it opens an avenue of hope that resonates in a child s life. NOTES FROM OUR MEMBERS To my Binkley Family: it s only been 2 months since moving to Indianapolis, but not seeing your faces seems so much longer! I found a spiritual foundation in the Indianapolis Great Banquet in early May. This 72-hour retreat with Christian women in a non-denominational, multi-racial setting was the connection I needed. I reunite with some friends on the weekends, and I experience different churches on Sundays. The number of Baptist churches on every corner in NC are replaced by Presbyterian and Methodist and other Christian churches here. Lots to explore. Being with my two grands often is indeed grand! I look forward to more adventures and time shared when school is out for the summer. I enjoy hearing from you by jcsordean5@gmail.com, and snail mail: 5340 Rue de Ville, Indianapolis. IN ~Judy Sordean Bobby Wagoner s spine surgery on May 24 went well. He and Marcella are grateful for the expressions of care and concern they have received in recent days. A message of gratitude to all the kind, caring people who offered love, support, and prayers before and after the recent death of my brother Martin. Much appreciated. ~Geraldine King
