A misconception which needs to be made clear immediately is that Isaiah was not foretelling the coming of Christ. Isaiah was speaking to his people, using imagery about their God which they would understand. Isaiah was calling the people to repentance. As judgement dawned, the tradition of the Jews was that eyes were opened, ears were unstopped, and a highway was prepared on which God might travel. (Liberating the Gospels. Reading the Bible with Jewish Eyes. John Shelby Sponge) The highway began in the desert which was the abode of unclean spirits and the scapegoat which was driven into the wilderness with the peoples sins on its back. These are the notes of the Jewish celebration of Rosh Hashanah or Jewish New Year. This is a call to repentance which starts with the blowing of the ram s horn (shofar). We hear these same notes in the Gospel. Mark opens the Gospel with John the Baptist crying in the wilderness, and like the ram s horn which announces the New Year and atonement, John calls for repentance. John s call is for Mark s community and for us. Mark is encouraging his suffering community and Mark is encouraging us as well, as we struggle with evil. There is hope and joy in Christ. The Lord is not being slow to carry out his promises, but he is being patient with all of you, wanting nobody to be lost and everybody to be brought to a change of ways. (2 Peter 3: 9) Do we hear the shofar? What are the evils in our lives to which we need to attend? Do we trust that God will come with power to set things right? 6 NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER IN SOLIDARITY WITH INDIGENOUS PEOPLES IN CANADA DECEMBER 12, 2017 Since 1980 over 1,181 Indigenous women and girls have been murdered in Canada. In June 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission issued 94 Calls to Action designed to redress the legacy left by the Indian Residential Schools. In Call to Action no. 41, the federal government is invited to launch a public inquiry into the cause of and remedies for the disproportionate victimization of Indigenous women and girls; "The inquiry's mandate would include: (a) investigation into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls; (b) links to the inter-generational legacy of residential schools." In December 2015, the federal government of Canada announced the launch of the first phase of a public inquiry into murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls. The national inquiry continues to this day. The overwhelming grief caused by these violent crimes can be felt throughout the community. Families of victims are looking for answers to understand what happened to their loved one, a demonstration that the public cares, and to be treated fairly. Justice and hope need to come together for each and every one of the victims and their families. On this day of prayer, the members of the Canadian Catholic Aboriginal Council, wish to bring awareness to this important issue. They call on all Catholics to pray to the Creator for hope and justice for the victims and their families. They call on communities, parishes and individuals to support the national inquiry in any way they can, by participating in ceremonies and truly experiencing them, participating in search and rescue operations and providing spaces for people to meet. They call on individuals to pray for the victims and their families and to share any information they may have with the proper authorities. On December 12 th, 2017 National Day of Prayer in Solidarity with Indigenous Peoples in Canada we are invited to come together in prayer for the victims and their loved ones with the following prayer: Creator God, we acknowledge all of the gifts we have been given. We especially acknowledge the gifts of the women in our lives, our mothers, grandmothers, wives, aunties, sisters and nieces. We express our sorrow and hurt for those of our Indigenous sisters who have gone missing or have been murdered. At this time, we ask for blessings for all women and especially for those who have experienced inexplicable violation and suffering. We ask for comfort, care and consolation for those family members left behind. We again acknowledge the gifts of the Spirit we have been given and we ask for these blessings in Christ. Amen
7 Many across our country and in our diocese are now coming together to share in ceremonies, uniting the families of victims, the community and the spirit of the departed to deal with their grief. One such opportunity will be in Sudbury: Walking With OUR Sisters (WWOS) Memorial Art Installation January 7 th -17 th 2018 Weekdays 11:00-7:00 Saturday and Sunday 10:00-5:00pm McEwen School of Architecture 85 Elm St. January 3rd-6th Installation of the memorial. Volunteers always welcome. All are welcome. Indigenous & non-indigenous women, men, two-spirit, children, youth. Teachings on protocol and ceremony are given to all volunteers before they begin. January 7 th Opening Ceremonies at 1:00 Feast 2:00 School group bookings will be accommodated weekdays from 9:30-11:00 Counselors, Elders, Keepers and Sacred Fire always on sight during open hours. The WWOS memorial creates a sacred space in which the spirits of missing and murdered Indigenous women, children and two-spirit persons are honoured and continue to live in the hearts and minds of their families and communities. The memorial installation features over 1,900 pairs of moccasin tops (vamps) hand-beaded created and donated by hundreds of caring and concerned individuals to draw attention to the untimely and unjust disappearances and deaths of valued community members. An additional 118 vamps were gifted to the memorial in 2015 and represent the children who never returned home from the Indian Residential Schools. More than an art installation, WWOS is a ceremony that creates space for the community to collectively remember, honour, and grieve loved ones. The ceremony is travelling for a total of 7 years to territories and communities across Canada and the United States. WWOS is free and all are welcome to support and enter into this healing opportunity. Web.WALKINGWITHOURSISTERS.CA FaceBook: Walking With Our Sisters Sudbury M'nidoo Kweok Gathering WWOS is grassroots, organized entirely by volunteers and guided by community Elders. Each community is responsible for fundraising to cover the costs of hospitality and hosting the ceremony and transporting it to the next community which will be hosted in Kenora after Sudbury. An opportunity to support the WWOS fundraising efforts to bring the memorial to Sudbury will be an Advent into Christmas Concert of Carols & Anthems being held at St. Patrick's church 39 Walford rd. At 4:00pm on December 17 th. The $20 tickets can be purchased in advance at One Sky at 125 Durham St.. or at the door on the 17 th starting at 3:00 during the Kokum and Tea open house in the lower hall before the concert.
