Not seeing him, they returned home but Mary stayed on, searching. Sometimes we fail to look for things in places we least expect to find them. This may be the case with the Risen Christ. We look for Christ out there and fail to see the risen Christ right here and now, in the present. The task of a Christian is to help others see the Christ in the here and now, in the thisness. Mary Magdalene found Christ when she heard him acknowledge her name, her reality, her thisness. How often does the risen Christ call us by name, wanting us to find Him in our reality and how often do we continue to look for Him out there.? In the beginning, God created life by breathing on the formless mud and Adam was created: life from life. At Jesus baptism, the breath of God came over him and the new Adam was created. After the Resurrection, Christ breathes on his fearful disciples, making a connection between the first Adam, Himself and them. They are the new creation, called to tell people that the Risen Christ is not hidden from history but is a part of it. They and we, like them, are called to reanimate the world. They and we, like them, are called to tell people that the Incarnation, the Resurrection and the Ascension are about us as much as they are about Jesus. The path of Franciscan spirituality which we have been following this season teaches that the way to completeness is through the Cross. The Cross is not about shame and guilt. It is not about victim theology. It is about love and compassion which transform the world. Love, peace and compassion are not commodities. They are, like God, relational. They cannot exist without community and our call as followers of the Risen Christ is to create the community where love, peace, and compassion can flourish. Life Focus How are you called to create a community of love, peace and compassion right where you OFFICE are? 4 Easter 2016

5 First, we kept the forty days, with praying, fasting and giving alms. Then we celebrated the three days of Christ s passion, dying and rising. Now we delight in the fifty days, with rejoicing, feasting and giving witness! The season of Easter is fifty days long. It is a time of unbridled joy, of exuberant rejoicing. The church tells us, The fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost are celebrated in joyful exultation as one feast day, or better as one great Sunday. These above all others are days for the singing of the Alleluia. (General Norms for the Liturgical Year and Calendar, #22) Why is Eastertime fifty days? The ancient cultures that gave us the Bible had great respect for numbers. They believed that numbers contained hints about God and the meaning of life. The number seven was thought to contain fullness: There are seven days in the week, according to God s original way of ordering time, creating all that there is and resting. So if you multiply 7 times 7, you have fullness times fullness. But wait! 7x7 is 49! With God, there is always more more than we can ever imagine. So our holy season of Easter is even more than fullness times fullness. It s fullness times fullness and then some: 7x7+1. That s what love is like: more than we can ever imagine. That s what heaven is going to be like: more than we can ever imagine. The fifty days are days for looking for the risen Lord among us, for hearing in each other s stories of rising from the big and small deaths, days when we experience something of Christ s triumphs. That s why we look to the newly baptized, robed in bright new clothes and oily with gladness: At Easter, they died and rose with Christ! Now they take their places with us. Together, like the apostles who were so full of the Spirit that people thought they were drunk, we rush about with good and giddy news: Death is not the last word! Life and love are forever! And slowly, painstakingly, we work together, together with Christ, to change this world into the world to come. Sing Alleluia! Whenever a group of people gather for a public event, it is usual for them to identify themselves in some way. Uniforms, team jackets or color-coded name tags announce to friend and stranger alike common interests or origins. At Sunday eucharist we remind ourselves of our kinship with one another and with Christ through baptism in the rite of blessing and sprinkling of holy water. This rite, familiar to some as the asperges from the pre-vatican II liturgy (from the text that was chanted), calls to mind our union with the death and resurrection of Jesus. The revised ritual reminds us that the sprinkling rite is appropriate at any Sunday liturgy, for it expresses the paschal character of Sunday. It is particularly appropriate during the Easter season and on feasts in which baptismal images are highlighted. After the sign of the cross and the greeting, the blessing and sprinkling with holy water is actually the first option and the penitential rite is the second. The rite of sprinkling is simple: The preside invites the assembly to pray silently, then blesses the water. In some places, salt, a symbol of strength and flavor and effectiveness, among other things, is added. Then the assembly is blessed with the water. The priest and other ministers may walk through the assembly generously sprinkling the people, or people may come forward in a procession and sign themselves with the water. In either case, an abundant use of water signifies God s overflowing love and mercy. As in the sacrament of baptism itself, many levels of meaning come into play: Water signifies cleansing, protection from evil, newness of life, forgiveness of sin and God s saving deeds. After the sprinkling rite and opening prayer, the liturgy of the word begins. Immediately we do what baptized people are called to do. We listen to God s word, offer prayers for the needs of all, give thanks and praise and share in the body and blood of our Lord. Conscious of our shared baptismal heritage, we are sent forth to announce the good news which we ourselves have seen and hear. The Ritual of Blessing and Sprinkling Water will be done at all Sunday Masses during the Easter Season until Pentecost (May 15).
