1 Anglican Diocese of Qu Appelle Anglican Roman Catholic Covenant Implementation Committee Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Regina Newsletter Lent 2017 The Anglican-Roman Catholic Covenant Implementation Committee (ARCCIC) greets you in the name of the Lord in this season of Lent, May the Lenten observances deepen our common faith in the one Baptism as we approach the Feast of the Resurrection at Easter. During 2016, we rejoiced in the appointment by Pope Francis of the Most Reverend Donald Bolen as Archbishop of Regina, succeeding the late Archbishop Daniel Bohan. An Anglican delegation led by Dean Mike Sinclair of St. Paul s Cathedral attended Archbishop Bolen s installation by the papal nuncio at Holy Rosary Cathedral on October 14, where Dean Sinclair brought greetings from the ecumenical community. Before becoming Bishop of Saskatoon in 2010, Donald Bolen was the principal architect of the Covenant between the Archdiocese of Regina and the Diocese of Qu Appelle, signed by Archbishop Bohan and Bishop Gregory Kerr-Wilson at St. Paul s Cathedral in January Archbishop Bolen is a leader in the national and international Anglican-Roman Catholic dialogue. He spent seven years at the Vatican with the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, working on relations with the Anglican Communion and the Methodist Churches. We look forward to the renewed impetus Archbishop Bolen will bring to the covenant relationship. Sincerely, Canon Michael Jackson and Susan Klein, Co-Chairs, on behalf of: Archdeacon Catherine Harper, Rev. Rick Krofchek, Rev. Dr. John Meehan, SJ, and Susan Rollins Anglican Diocese of Qu Appelle St. Paul s Cathedral, 1861 McIntyre St. Regina, SK S4P 2R2 Tel: (306) Fax (306) RC Archdiocese of Regina 445 Broad St North Regina, SK S4R 2X8 Tel: (306) Fax: (306) Page 1

2 Parish Activities Moosomin St. Mary s RC and St. Alban s Anglican held a prayer service on December 10. This prayer service has been held annually since It was followed by a time of fellowship. In July 2016 members of the two churches worked together to help a couple from Honduras who were fighting to have refugee status. With the help from people in the two parishes, they were given an extension so the government could study their case more closely. Marilyn Paul Regina Anglican/Catholic Advent Compline Compline was held every Friday night at 9 p.m. during Advent 2016 at St. Mary s Anglican, Regina, with a short organ recital by Valerie Hall at 8:45 p.m. This is a group of Anglicans, Catholics and Lutherans who started out at a chant workshop in August 2015, which was held at St. Mary s Anglican and Holy Rosary Cathedral, plus some others who were part of Schola at Campion. It is a simple way that we can gather together in prayer at special times of the year. Valerie Hall and Fr. Claude Schroeder at St. Mary s organize these times of prayer. Marian Grady Regina Holy Rosary Cathedral and St. Paul s Cathedral in Regina again exchanged delegations at Sunday services. On May 1st, 2016, a group from St. Paul s led by Dean Mike Sinclair and Deacon Michael Jackson attended Mass at Holy Rosary, where they were warmly welcomed by Father Lorne Crozon and the congregation and Dean Sinclair gave a homily. On January 29, 2017, a delegation from Holy Rosary led by Deacon Barry Wood attended the Solemn Eucharist of the Conversion of St. Paul. The preacher was Bishop Sid Haugen of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in Germany started by Martin Luther. 3 Qu Appelle Roman Catholics Worship in Anglican Church Faced with prohibitively expensive repairs to their church building, Immaculate Conception RC parish in the Town of Qu Appelle decided to seek other accommodation for worship. St. Peter s Anglican parish came to the rescue. With the approval of both bishops, an agreement has been worked out between the two parishes and Immaculate Conception has begun holding its services in St. Peter s. St. Peter s churchwarden Linda Kort reports as follows: The RC congregation brought their tabernacle. It is set up at the left side (as the congregation sees it) of the reredos. We set up a special table close to the entrance so that they can have space for their books. They have brought service books and hymn books and also have a small table for bulletins etc. We made some room in the vestment closet if they needed to store vestments... On Sunday, March 12, Bishop Rob Hardwick and the Rev. Cheryl Johnson came to take the service at St. Peter s. The president of the Catholic board, Chad Geis, attended the service and the potluck meal afterwards. After the meal, Chad Geis stood to thank St. Peter s for being so welcoming. He said that he had been pleasantly surprised at how at home the Catholic congregation felt in our building. Bishop Rob spoke words of praise for the way the congregations had worked to share the building. A schedule of services has been drawn up till the end of May, with times varying to accommodate the needs of both congregations. Flexibility is the order of the day! Congratulations from ARCCIC to the people of Immaculate Conception and St. Peter s on their imaginative implementation of the Covenant relationship in the Town of Qu Appelle. 6 International Anglican-Roman Catholic Dialogue Archbishop Donald Bolen and Bishop Dennis Drainville of Quebec with Pope Francis in Rome. A call for Anglican and Roman Catholic bishops from around the world to work more closely together in witness and joint mission is part of the ongoing fruit of a unique eight-day gathering held earlier in the fall of 2016 in Canterbury and Rome, says Regina Archbishop Donald Bolen. We were commissioned as pairs of bishops to go and work together, to witness together wherever possible, and to encourage our brother bishops to work together, says Bolen, one of the bishops from around the world commissioned for the task by Pope Francis and Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby. The ongoing story is what the pairs of Anglican and Catholic bishops can do together across Canada, and across the world. Bolen was the Canadian Catholic representative bishop at the gathering. He was paired with Canadian Anglican representative Bishop Dennis Drainville of Quebec. (Prairie Messenger, November 23, 2016) View the Joint statement Walking Together: Common Service to the Word and Witness to the Gospel October Gestures have played a role in the long walk towards reconciliation..the gift of Pope Francis to Archbishop Justin of a replica of the pastoral staff of St Gregory the Great during our gathering, reminds us that at the heart of our proclamation as bishops is the love of God made manifest in the crucified and risen Christ, who is the Good Shepherd of us all. Archbishop Justin gave the Pope his own pectoral cross, the cross of nails from Coventry Cathedral, a symbol of the sinfulness of war and violence, and of the new life which is made possible through the reconciling work of Calvary. 7 Join us for a Lenten meal, and an evening of study, worship and prayer Mary: Grace and Hope in Christ In 2005 the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission published an agreed statement Mary: Grace and Hope in Christ produced by an international panel of theologians and Bishops on the place, meaning, and role of Mary in our respective communions.
