For the time being, let go of the physical raising of Lazarus and consider this Gospel from a spiritual point of view. Perhaps, Lazarus did not physically die. Perhaps, Lazarus experienced a real sense of loss and frustration concerning the mission of Jesus and was ready to give up. Lazarus and his sisters were friends of Jesus and financial supporters of Jesus. They were taken up by his words and filled with the hope that the Kingdom had come. When they looked around, what they saw did not seem to match their expectations. Yes, the blind saw, the lame walked, and even the dead were raised but the Romans were still in control, the religious authorities were still tyrannizing the people, and poverty and sickness were still rampant. So, perhaps, just perhaps, Lazarus thought, what is the sense in all of this? Perhaps he was ready to let go and give up. Ever feel this way? Life is just too much. No matter how hard you try, nothing seems to get better. So, why try? Why not just give up? Jesus said you cannot put old wine into new wineskins. Perhaps Lazarus was using old wineskins for the new teachings. Jesus was offering more than Lazarus was expecting, but how was he to receive it? The life Jesus was offering was not the freedom from tragedy, illness, depression, divorce, poverty, or heartache, but a life rooted in trust. It is a life the world cannot give. There is a great mystery in this reality, the one in which we are strong when we are weak, the one in which we come to the end of ourselves, only to discover that God has there the whole time, the God who is for us. Rob Bell) When Jesus asked that the stone be rolled back and that the clothes binding Lazarus be removed, perhaps Jesus was saying to Lazarus, and to us, see and believe! 2 Fifth Sunday of Lent NEXT SUNDAY BEGINS HOLY WEEK! Holy week is the week which precedes the great Feast of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday: It includes the last days of Lent and the beginning of the Easter Triduum. During Holy week, the Church celebrates the mysteries of salvation accomplished by Christ in the last days of his life on earth, beginning with his messianic entrance into Jerusalem. PALM-PASSION SUNDAY APRIL 9 The blessing and distribution of palm branches with a procession through church. More details to Holy Week event in next Sunday bulletin. WIDOWS/WIDOWERS/LOSS OF CHILD SUPPORT GROUP: We will not have a meeting in March because two of our cooks are away. Our next meeting will be Tuesday. April 4 th at 5:30 pm downstairs in the Upper Hall. The cost is $6 for the dinner. We ask if any widow/widower or parent that is interested in coming and has never been to a meeting before, to please call the office and give your name. We want to make sure we have plenty of food for everyone. Our numbers are growing quickly and so are the friendships. We also ask that if any widow/widower or parent wishes to join the quiet fellowship dialogue with our facilitator Celia that they meet in the boardroom which is the lower room below the office at 4 pm. Here you can have a more personal healing time. It is usually in a small group setting and will last until 5:30 pm where the group will then join the others for supper. AN INVITATION FROM BISHOP DAMPHOUSSE Chrism Mass 2017 The Chrism Mass will be held this year on Thursday, April 6 th at 7:00pm at St. Jerome Church, Sault Ste. Marie. This is truly a diocesan celebration. We would hope that deacons, members of the Diocesan Order of Service, religious women and men and the people from all four sectors would feel this solidarity within our own Church by celebrating with the Bishop and the priests of our Diocese. All are invited to participate in this bilingual diocesan celebration. A reception will follow in St. Jerome Parish Hall. Bishop of Sault Ste. Marie I will be attending this special annual event on your behalf. I am taking a couple of days before for some R & R. I will be back on Friday April 7th. ST. For this year s Share Lent campaign, we invite you to listen to the voices of women who are working to build the world of tomorrow Woman at the Heart of Change. You will find testimonials from the four corners of the globe inside our Mini-magazine. Our first testimonial is from Marta and Silvia, two women from Paraguay who are Members of Indigenous women s farming association supporting by Development and Peace Caritas Canada. I wish that there was land for everyone, that women were free [and] that they had the freedom to organize and defend their rights, Silvia tells us. Women have always been at the heart of our organization! Did you know that in 1979, Development and Peace led a campaign to support the Grandmothers of Plaza de Maya, in Argentina, whose children and grandchildren disappeared under the military dictatorship? SHARE LENT COLLECTION: APRIL 2 ND SOLIDARITY WAY OF THE CROSS on Good Friday April 14, 2017 at 7 pm. The solidarity Stations of the Cross will be held on Good Friday at 7 pm. We are all invited to come together to accompany Jesus in his march toward death and his burial. This was not a defeat, however, as death had no power over him. As part of the 50th anniversary, the Catholic Organization for Development and Peace has chosen to offer you a Way of the Cross in which women hold a special place. Let us all open our hearts to the perspective of the women who accompanied Christ in his passion, and let us pray in solidarity with our sisters throughout the world for a world of justice and peace.
