What meaning does this reading of the Passion have for you in your life? Where have you met the suffering Jesus? Have you met the suffering Jesus in an illness or in the illness of a family member? Have you seen the suffering Jesus in a homeless person? Have you felt the suffering Jesus in the neglect of an elderly man or woman? Have you experienced the suffering Jesus in the disrespectful treatment of someone who is of a different race? Have you heard the suffering of Jesus in the slurs cast upon those of a different sexual orientation? Jesus suffering is present in the here and now. Jesus suffering is the suffering of God because in Jesus God takes on our humanity. Taking on humanity, God raises us to a new dignity in Jesus, with Jesus and through Jesus. God doesn t demand anything of us in return. God doesn t demand worship or love. Through Jesus, God simply says, Follow me. So how do we love God? We love God in our thisness, as Duns Scotus, a 13 th century Franciscan, taught. We love God in the here and now. If we love one another in our thisness, God remains in us, and God s love is brought to perfection in us. (1John 4:12) Jeremiah, Isaiah, Hosea, Joel, Micah, Zachariah, and Jesus all say the same thing. What I want you to do is love suffering people where you find them. I believe our inability to recognize and love God in what is right in front of us has made us separate religion from our actual lives. (Richard Rohr, OFM. Love God in what is right in front of you.) When we bring together religion and life, we love as God loves. When we love people in our thisness, for themselves and in themselves, not for what they can do for us, we love as God loves. When we love as God loves, God lives in us and we in God. Life Focus Are you willing to travel the same path of Jesus, to love in the thisness? -submitted OFFICE by HOURS: Tuesday to Friday; 9 am 12 pm & 1 pm 4 pm Tony Chezzi 39 Walford Road Sudbury ON P3E 2H2 Tel: Fax: stpatricks@unitz.ca OFFICE HOURS: Tuesday to Friday; 9 am 12 pm & 1 pm 4 pm For more information visit our website: 39 Walford Road Sudbury ON P3E 2H2 Tel: Fax: stpatricks@unitz.ca For more information visit our website:

March 20, 2016 Aromas That Kill!! A number of parishioners ask if fellow parishioners could please refrain from strong perfume and after shave colognes. Some are allergic to strong odors which could cause breathing problems. This is a phenomenon increasingly present in our society. So, please consider those who are afflicted, especially with the greater numbers of people who will be attending our liturgies during Holy Week. The C.W.L. Sisterhood Project is a regional project to support our sisters in the League and their families from our of town who come to Sudbury for planned or unexpected medical treatment at the Regional hospital. This is often an overwhelming experience for out of town people. We are being asked to be available for 1 month three times a year to provide emotional and spiritual help to our sisters and their families when requested. We require volunteers for this project who would be willing to be part of a prayer chain for their intentions or available to provide support if needed. If you are willing to help out please contact Diane Pagan at or the parish office. Daily Prayer for Priests: Sun. March. 20: Our Parish Priest Mon. March. 21: Fr. Krystztof Niewinski Tues. 4 There s a lot of talk in church now about the Three Days, or in Latin, the Triduum.. These are our most holy days. They make up our most important single celebration of the year: Easter. But exactly which three days make up the Paschal Triduum? At first this sounds like a stupid question, like, What color was Napoleon s white horse? or Who s buried in Grant s tomb? Actually, it s a trick question. Most would say that the Three Days are Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. And that s wrong! (How could Easter Sunday not be one of the Three Days?!?) The three days of our sacred Paschal Triduum are counted using the Jewish way of keeping time: from sunset to sunset. So the first day of the Triduum is from sunset on Holy Thursday until sunset on Good Friday. The second day is from sunset on Good Friday until sunset on Holy Saturday. The third day is from sunset Holy Saturday (the great Easter Vigil) to sunset Easter Sunday (Paschal Vespers). Does this make any difference? Or is it only good Catholic trivia? Here s the difference that it makes. We tend to think of the Three Days as commemorating separate, distinct events: On Holy Thursday we remember the Last Supper, on Good Friday we recall the passion, and on Holy Saturday we celebrate the resurrection. But in our liturgy, the church thinks about the Last Supper not as the last thing that happened on Holy Thursday but as the first thing to happen on Good Friday. What new insights into the eucharist do you have when you think of it as the first acts of Christ s passion? What new understanding of Sabbath the day of rest do you have when you reflect on the fact that Jesus slept in death from sunset Friday and all through the Jewish Sabbath, Saturday? And how might we spend our Saturday nights if we understood them to truly be the beginning of Sunday not just during the Triduum, but year round? What does it mean when the deacon or cantor sings at the Vigil that because of the resurrection, this night is brighter than any day? These Three Days are in a single moment. We walk (or crawl) into this moment on Thursday night and walk (or dance) out on Easter day. In between, there s a flood of stories and songs, rites and rest, fasting and feasting. The Three Days are time out of time, the center of our year and of our life. [Copyright 1998 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications]

What will each Liturgy look like during the Three Days? DAY ONE This Mass is one of quiet joy and thanksgiving for Jesus gift of the Eucharist and the Priesthood. The liturgy includes: The presentation of three holy oils recently blessed by the Bishop and Priests of the Diocese Readings recalling the Jewish Passover and the Last Supper The washing of feet ritual in remembrance of Jesus command to care for and serve each other A collection of food for the Inner City Home A solemn procession at the end of Mass in which the consecrated bread is reserved overnight (in a special chapel in the upper hall) for distribution of Communion at the 3 pm Good Friday liturgy. People are needed for half hour of adoration and prayer in the chapel 8:30 pm to 12 midnight. The church will be closed at 12 am. The stripping of the sanctuary concludes this liturgy. About the Washing of the Feet Jesus washed his disciples feet at the Last Supper and commanded them to do the same an expression of humble service in His community. Foot washing calls for kneeling down in front of each other as Jesus has done for us. Anyone (young, old, male, female) is welcomed to take part in this expression of service. There will be four areas where this will take place. One person s foot (or both if you wish) will be washed. Then, that person (after putting their stockings and shoes back on) will wash the next person s foot (feet). This day draws forth from everyone reverent silence and deep reflection upon his death for us and with us. Today is a day of fast and abstinence to better enter into the spirit of this day. This is a day of triumph over death a Good day truly!

The main focus of the community this day can be experienced in one or all of the following liturgies services (each one is different) 11 am - Morning Prayer about 40 minutes of hymns, prayers, reflection on the Psalms, Scripture, brief homily, intercessions This liturgy ends around the time that custom has considered to be the time Jesus was nailed to the cross (Communion will not be given). 3 pm - Solemn Celebration of the Lord s Passion (Suffering and Death) This liturgy begins at the time custom says Jesus died. It will last about 1 ½ hours. The liturgy consists of: Three Bible readings including St. John s account of Jesus suffering and death (with various readers), Solemn General Intercessions, Veneration of the Cross, Holy Communion. By ancient custom the Church does not celebrate the Sacraments on this day. The Eucharist is not celebrated. Communion will be given from bread consecrated at the Holy Thursday liturgy. 7 pm - The Way of the Cross (about ½ hour) Children are welcome to come to any of the above services. There will be no service specifically directed to children. DAY TWO This is a day of quiet preparation for the joy of celebrating in a solemn way what we celebrate every Sunday Jesus is risen!!! Our fasting continues. 9:30 am - Morning Prayer A ½ hour of praying the Psalms, hearing the Word, interceding for the world a quiet expression of waiting at the tomb. Those preparing for The Easter Vigil Sacraments of Baptism Confirmation Eucharist will be present and go to a place for some quiet time of preparation.

DAY THREE begins at sunset on March 26 7 pm - The Vigil of Easter (4:30 pm Mass cancelled) The First Mass of Easter begins in darkness after sunset. A ritual of fire (outside, weather permitting) with the lighting of the new 2016 Easter Candle and everyone sharing in the new light. He is risen he takes away the darkness! There follows a procession into the Church for a solemn sung Easter Proclamation ( Exultet ) Three Old Testament Scripture readings invite us to rejoice in the gift of creation, the gift of freedom and the gift of new life This leads into the Song of Angels (Gloria) and two Christian Scripture readings The next part of the liturgy focuses on the Baptism Confirmation Eucharist of 6 children and Confirmation of three adults (already baptized). Also, the Assembly makes a solemn renewal of their baptism. The Vigil liturgy then concludes with the Eucharistic Prayer and distribution of Communion. A reception for all follows in the Church hall. Easter Sunday: March 27 An extra Mass has been added this year to accommodate the large numbers: 8 am & 10 am. FOREVER CHANGED Attending a baptism, Edward Hahnenberg wondered if it wouldn t be a lot less complicated to skip the dunking. Surely there must be an easier way. And then it dawned on me: Baptism is not the easy way! It symbolizes a radical, life-transforming commitment to Christ. Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive?
