1 Feast day of St. Nicholas December 6 th By popular culture, St. Nicholas is perhaps the most closely linked saint to the Christmas season. As Archbishop of Myra, Nicholas was noted for his deeply religious life, his generosity and love of the poor, his battles against heresies, against persecutors of Christians and human injustice. He was a true shepherd of his people and a model of faith. His life of gift giving and defence of the faith connect with the spirit of Christmas within us. The proximity of St. Nicholas feast day to the feast of the Nativity is an accident of history. Saint days are on the church calendar for the day the saint fell asleep in the Lord; on December 6 th, we remember St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas gave of his wealth to help others throughout his lifetime. Because of his generous actions, St. Nicholas is a strong reminder of the call of Christ. The feast day of St. Nicholas is celebrated during the time of Pylypiwka when we are preparing our hearts to celebrate the birth of our Lord. St. Nicholas shows us the ideal of love, charity, and generosity. He was ready to help anyone in any situation, regardless of the cost to himself. Let us celebrate St. Nicholas memory by imitating his goodness, generosity and selfless giving.

We have an update on the Theodore court case ruling. All eight Catholic boards in the province are working together to explore funding the appeal of the decision last April by Justice Layh. We are committed to raising the funds without using operational monies given to us for classrooms. We are asking your help to defray the costs. As was communicated previously in earlier correspondence, the Saskatchewan Catholic School Boards Association (SCSBA) set up a website for donations in June: thank those who have already donated. Since we will be in court by mid-2018, we must now begin an official major fundraising campaign to help us cover present and future legal costs. Our collective goal is to raise $300,000 to pay for the legal counsel anticipated for both the Saskatchewan Court of Appeals and the potential Supreme Court of Canada. We are optimistic that this goal will be reached with the kindness and generosity of our stakeholders. We have about 40,000 students in Saskatchewan who attend Catholic schools and we will do whatever is necessary to help protect a parent s ability to choose a faith-based Catholic education for their child(ren). We believe in what our Catholic schools have to offer and acknowledge you do as well. We therefore encourage you to consider contributing to our collective challenge during our Official Fundraising Campaign beginning November 14 th. Lastly, we would like to emphasize that we have been offering Catholic education (not just education to Catholics) for over 125 years in the province of Saskatchewan. By the grace of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we have weathered many storms. We have faith and hope this current situation will be no different. Parents with a genuine desire to access a Catholic education for their children will continue to be welcomed in Catholic schools this year and for many years to come.
