Some felt that he had returned in Jesus. When Jesus encounters a grieving widow in Naim, he restores her son to life, just as Elijah had done in the story we heard from the First Book of Kings. Only God can bring life. Through God s power, Elijah restored the boy s life. Through his power Jesus raised the young man in Naim. We too can rely on God s power. The word of the Lord does give life! Life Focus Recall an impossible situation when there seemed to be no hope of a solution and then the unexpected happened. In what way did new life appear? Describe a time when someone s words to you gave your life new meaning and purpose. Relate an occasion when your words or actions renewed a lost relationship, revived a dead issue or restored hope in a desperate situation. -Diocese of Rockville Centre The Church of the Good Shepherd Holbrook, OFFICE New York HOURS: Tuesday to Friday; 9 am 12 pm & 1 pm 4 pm 39 Walford Road Sudbury ON P3E 2H2 Tel: Fax: stpatricks@unitz.ca OFFICE HOURS: Tuesday to Friday; 9 am 12 pm & 1 pm 4 pm For more information visit our website: 39 Walford Road Sudbury ON P3E 2H2 Tel: Fax: stpatricks@unitz.ca For more information visit our website:

2 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time THANK YOU! Saturday, May 28th provided the best weather for gardeners and outdoor enthusiasts. The combination of overnight, and early morning rain though forced the cancellation of work planned by ELEVATE 2016 at the Robinson Playground. Regrettably, although the sun was out in all its splendour by the afternoon, the rink boards were too wet to be worked on. The planned worked had to be cancelled and rescheduled to a later date. Thank you to all those who planned to help, as well as all who donated supplies. As promised, the St. Patrick's Parish Knights of Columbus fired up the coffee and tea pots along with a variety of desserts and provided a continental breakfast. A true thank you for being there early to prepare the food. Gratitude is also extended to the City of Greater Sudbury, Parks and Recreation Department, for their assistance with supplies. Cynthia Hall- Picard Re-creation Co-ordinator worked diligently with ELEVATE 2016, and the Robinson Playground Association to support our work. Thank you to the collaborating churches, Glad Tidings, St. Mark United Church, Trinity Lutheran Church and the Salvation Army for their participation and work. Lastly, thank you to Monsignor Jim for his passionate support and advancement of the project every step of the way. ~ Maurizio Visentin STILL LOOKING: Rides for Sunday Mass for two car-less parishioners. Thanks to the research of our parish Bookkeeper (Mariette Giroux) the parish will receive $11, back on HST rebates for This will help our ability to meet expenses during the coming summer months. Evening Presentation at Villa Loyola, - Reason for Faith presented by Dr. Lucien Pelletier. As a professor of philosophy I have been asked from time to time about the rational ground for religious faith, by individuals who expressed the need to understand. In the public discourse, either scientific or religious, I think that this moment of philosophical reflection about the articulation of reason and faith is missing. The presentation proposes a way to think of this articulation.. DATE: Tuesday June 14 th, 7pm, free admission LOCATION: 4951 Long Lake Rd REGISTRATION: Call ext. 0 Monday to Friday or loyola@isys.ca Infant Baptism: Next Saturday at the 4:30 pm Mass 3 children will begin their faith journey in Christ and His Church. We welcome and support their families. Inner City Home of Sudbury It s almost that time of year again, when school will soon be finished and families will be vacationing that time of year that we all look forward to. However, those who are in financial need and crisis situations still need our help! We have had a very busy winter and I anticipate the same will hold true for the summer months. Our shelves in the Food Bank are looking quite bare as donations have already slowed down this past month and we have been using any surplus food that we had from the winter food drives. At this time when the food supplies are so low, we have to purchase basic food items steadily, which is a tremendous drain on our financial resources (that also drop off during the summer months). Some of the items most needed at this time are: Macaroni & cheese, pork and beans, canned vegetables, canned corn, soups, canned meats & fish, potatoes, cereals, canned pasta sauce or canned tomatoes. Also in short supply, are toiletries such as hand soap, toothpaste, shampoo, razor blades and deodorant. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated and will go a long way to help someone in need. Food donations can be dropped off at 251 Elm St. Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or left in the grocery carts located at the entrances of the church. Thank you for your ongoing support and generosity and we wish you a happy and healthy summer. Mary Ali ~ Executive Director Monthly Dinner at La Porte des Eaux/The Water Gate, 1534 Pioneer Rd., Sun. 4 The Joy of Love (Amoris Laetitia). From Pope Francis. April 8, 2016 Chapter 3. Looking to Jesus: The Vocation of the Family. The third chapter recalls "some essential aspects of the Church's teaching on marriage and the family." He refers to teachings from the last three pontiffs regarding marriage, reasserts the Church s teaching on marriage, cites Scripture to emphasize the sacramental nature of marriage. All this presents the ideal and then he goes on to say; 79. When faced with difficult situations and wounded families, it is always necessary to recall this general principle: Pastors must know that, for the sake of truth, they are obliged to exercise careful discernment of situations (Familiaris Consortio, 84). The degree of responsibility is not equal in all cases and factors may exist which limit the ability to make a decision. Therefore, while clearly stating the Church s teaching, pastors are to avoid judgements that do not take into account the complexity of various situations, and they are to be attentive, by necessity, to how people experience and endure distress because of their condition. Chapter 4. Love in Marriage. Chapter 4 is a masterpiece. It should be read by every couple planning to marry and every couple who has been married for no matter how many years. Hopefully some publisher will publish this chapter separately for marriage prep classes and marriage counseling as well as for high school and college courses. It begins with a wonderful meditation on St. Paul's lyrical passage on love in First Corinthians (13:4-7). He quotes Martin Luther King Jr. and refers to the movie "Babette's Feast. The tone (of Chapter 4) is pastoral and inspiration, not nagging or judgmental. One can only conclude that, as a priest and bishop, he spent countless hours listening and dialoguing with couples about their lived experience. (Thomas Reese. NCR) If you have not seen the movie Babette s Feast, it is well worth watching it Marriage is a precious sign, for when a man and a woman celebrate the sacrament of marriage, God is, as it were, mirrored in them; he impresses in them his own features and the indelible character of his love. This has concrete daily consequences, because the spouses, in virtue of the sacrament, are invested with a true and proper mission, so that, starting with the simple ordinary things of life they can make visible the love with which Christ loves his Church and continues to give his life for her We should not however confuse different levels: there is no need to lay upon two limited persons the tremendous burden of having to reproduce perfectly the union existing between Christ and his Church, for marriage as a sign entails a dynamic process..., one which advances gradually with the progressive integration of the gifts of God Marital love is not defended primarily by presenting indissolubility as a duty, or by repeating doctrine, but by helping it to grow ever stronger under the impulse of grace. A love that fails to grow is at risk. Growth can only occur if we respond to God s grace through constant acts of love, acts of kindness that become ever more frequent, intense, generous, tender and cheerful. Husbands and wives become conscious of their unity and experience it more deeply from day to day For this reason, a love lacking either pleasure or passion is insufficient to symbolize the union of the human heart with God:

5 Chapter 5. Love Made Fruitful. Chapter 5 deals with children in the family. For Pope Francis, this chapter and the previous one are the "two central chapters dedicated to love." He says that "large families are a joy to the church" but agrees with St. John Paul II that that responsible parenthood does not mean "unlimited procreation or lack of awareness of what is involved in rearing children, but rather the empowerment of couples to use their inviolable liberty wisely and responsibly, taking into account social and demographic realities, as well as their own situation and legitimate desires." (167) "I certainly value feminism," he says, "but one that does not demand uniformity or negate motherhood." (175) He concludes that "in our day, the problem no longer seems to be the overbearing presence of the father so much as his absence, his not being there." (178) Chapter 6. Some Pastoral Perspectives. Chapter 6 reflects "on some of the more significant pastoral challenges." This chapter is addressed to bishops, priests and pastoral leaders in the church. He avoids detailed specificity because "different communities will have to devise more practical and effective initiatives that respect both the church's teaching and local problems and needs." (Thomas Reese. NCR) He speaks of the importance of proclaiming the gospel of the family, of preparing couples for marriage, of training of lay leaders, and of supporting and accompanying married couples as they continue their life together and experience crises, including breakdown and divorce or death. Noteworthy are his words about seminarians, who "should receive a more extensive interdisciplinary, and not merely doctrinal, formation in the areas of engagement and marriage." 203. "Their training does not always allow them to explore their own psychological and affective background and experience," say the pope, who was once a seminary rector. "There is a need to ensure that the formation process can enable them to attain the maturity and psychological balance needed for their future ministry." He also urges the presence of laypeople and "especially the presence of women in priestly formation. He speaks about the need for better marriage preparation. In some ways it reads like baptism preparation and mystygogia with the accompaniment of couples in the first years of married life. (232) The Exhortation stresses the importance of recent reform in the annulment proceedings. It concludes Divorce is an evil and the increasing number of divorces is very troubling. Hence, our most important pastoral task with regard to families is to strengthen their love, helping to heal wounds and working to prevent the spread of this drama of our times Chapter 7. Towards Better Education of Children. Chapter 7 deals with the education of children, which parents should take up "consciously, enthusiastically, reasonably, and appropriately." He urges vigilance but not obsession. "What is most important is the ability lovingly to help them grow in freedom, maturity, overall discipline and real autonomy." He stresses the ethical and religious formation of children. For the most part, what he says is sensible and traditional, but he also raises new issues, like the need for "technological disconnect."
