3 GROW IN YOUR FAITH Catholic Q & A Will we see our loved ones in heaven? We know of course that we will behold the face of God in heaven, see the face of Jesus, see our Blessed Mother. We will also be in communion with other members of the mystical Body of Christ. Those saints currently in heaven have not yet been given their glorified bodies, but we believe that they have been given a supernatural awareness to know and sense those who are present in heaven with them, to remember those people they knew in this life, and to communicate with them, by the graces and power God gives each of the saints in heaven. The church teaches definitively that there will be a new heaven and a new earth, at the end of the age; the earth will be renewed or transfigured. We will receive our glorified bodies; there will be no death or decay. In the book of Revelation we read He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away. So while the material universe will continue to exist, it will be perfected, just as our physical bodies will be perfected, and we will again be able to physically see our fellow members of the mystical body of Christ. Saint of the Day The First Martyrs of the Church of Rome Saint of the Day for June 30 There were Christians in Rome within a dozen or so years after the death of Jesus, though they were not the converts of the Apostle of the Gentiles (Romans 15:20). Paul had not yet visited them at the time he wrote his great letter in A.D. There was a large Jewish population in Rome. Probably as a result of controversy between Jews and Jewish Christians, the Emperor Claudius expelled all Jews from Rome in A.D. Suetonius the historian says that the expulsion was due to disturbances in the city caused by the certain Chrestus [Christ]. Perhaps many came back after Claudius death in 54 A.D. Paul s letter was addressed to a Church with members from Jewish and Gentile backgrounds. In July of 64 A.D., more than half of Rome was destroyed by fire. Rumor blamed the tragedy on Nero, who wanted to enlarge his palace. He shifted the blame by accusing the Christians. According to the historian Tacitus, many Christians were put to death because of their hatred of the human race. Peter and Paul were probably among the victims. Threatened by an army revolt and condemned to death by the senate, Nero committed suicide in 68 A.D. at the age of 31. Saint of the Day reprinted with permission of Franciscan Media. Beginning July 10th, St. Ursula Church will begin a parish-wide consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Participants will gather on Tuesdays at 9:30am or 7:00pm from July 10th through August 21st in the Spiritual Center to watch a video and engage in small group discussions about that week s readings and video. (July 10th morning session will be at 12:30pm). We will finish on August 21st at 7pm on the eve of the Queenship of Mary with a special Mass, the final prayers of consecration, and investment in the brown scapular. This is a powerful opportunity to grow closer to Jesus through Mary in a way you have probably never experienced before. Visit to learn more and to register. SUPPER & SERVICE Spend a summer evening with your fellow parishioners while helping others in our community. Each evening begins with a free dinner, followed by a talk and a service activity to benefit one of three charities in the community. This Saturday, we will make cookies for My Sister s Place. On July 28th, we will make bagged lunches for Beans & Bread. On August 25th we will make lasagnas for the Family Crisis Center. URSULA FIRST AND THIRD FRIDAY CLUB All area seniors (over 55) are welcome to come to the Spiritual Center (doors are at the back of the church) on the 1st & 3rd Fridays of every month, from 10:30am - 1:30pm.
