1 Sunday, August 5, 2018 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Times I am the vine, you are the branches. Saint Isaac Jogues Parish is a branch of the true vine, Jesus Christ. Our goal is to continue to build the kingdom of God while recognizing the need to remain in Christ. God has chosen us to go forth and bear much fruit, through our ministries of Liturgy, Faith Formation, Service, Stewardship, and Evangelization The readings this Sunday remind us that the manna in the desert prefigured the true bread from heaven, the Eucharist (CCC #1094). The readings also remind us that just as our ancestors in the desert longed for a sign of God s faithfulness, so too, the crowds around Jesus asked for a sign that they might see and believe. We come to the table of the Lord to encourage and deepen our own faith, to become what we receive, to become a sign of Jesus presence in the world. Questions to ponder: Do I see and believe? What can I do to see and believe more fully? Joan DeMerchant, Celebration Publications First Reading: Exodus 16:2-4, Second Reading: Ephesians 4:17, Gospel: John 6:24-35 SUMMER HOURS (May 25 - September 28) Monday-Thursday: 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Friday: 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM

2 From From the ThePastor Pastor Blessings to you! I m excited about beginning as pastor and joining the St Isaac Jogues parish family. I m grateful for Fr. Steven and his love and care as a good shepherd to you these last three years. We will continue to pray for him and his work in cultivating vocations to the priesthood and religious life. I look forward to getting to know you, your gifts, and the good work already happening at St Isaac Jogues. Your welcoming spirit and love for God and others is apparent. May we both continue to grow in these two great loves as Jesus taught us. We were made by God, for God and if for God, for others. Is there any greater calling in life than this? As mentioned in my first homily quoting St. Augustine, For you I am a priest, with you I am a Christian. Please pray for me that I may serve you in imitation of the Good Shepherd, a life lived for you, and may we encourage one another to radiate Jesus in all we do, for we are fellow Christians, joyfully Catholic, called to be light to the world! You are in my heart and prayers, Fr. Brian Nolan Preparation for Next Sunday Readings for the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Cycle B, Worship Kings 19:4-8 Elijah throws in the towel, but God sends an angel with food and comfort. Ephesians 4:30-5:2 Paul is imperative: Do not grieve the Spirit. Be imitators of God. John 6:41-51 The crowds cannot accept that the Jesus they know is the living bread of heaven. Since Old Testament times, the use of incense to God was a custom used not only by the Jewish people, but by almost every empire and world power in antiquity. Incense was associated both with the worship of the divine and the priestly office. Recall that the magi brought Christ gold, myrrh, and frankincense. So, when we burn incense at Mass, it is, in part, an outward sacramental sign of worship. We are reminded that as the smoke rises to the heavens, so do our prayers. Mark Hart, Behold the Mystery

If you can, please pick up a few items when you shop this week. During this month when many of our parishioners are on vacation, our parish pantry is in need of many basic items, such as peanut butter, jelly, hearty soups, pasta sauce, crackers, and beverages (juice, tea, coffee). Jude, he expressed his sincere gratitude on behalf of his entire parish for SIJ s assistance that allowed him to offer a 4-day Faith Formation experience for about 100 of his parishioners who serve in various liturgical ministries throughout the year. Part of the week s focus was the continued formation of those sacristans who serve at St. Anthony s chapels throughout Chenot, but workshops for the Children s Choir, the Drummers and the Mime Ministry were also held. Father Jude was even able to send a few short videos of the Liturgical Dance group as they practiced. This annual summer gathering is an exciting time at SAH parish. Those who tirelessly serve the church enjoyed an opportunity to gather to grow in God s word, renew friendships, and be recharged. With his careful budgeting, Father was even able to give each participant a small stipend and furnish meals. All who benefited from this experience send their thanks.
