(CCC 2447). Among those works of mercy are corporal works and spiritual works of mercy. The corporal works of mercy are the ones we may be more familiar with, and include feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned, and burying the dead. Practical Application: How can I practice a corporal work of mercy this week? Did you know we have a ministry here at Saint Ursula where parishioners visit the sick to bring them communion, pray with them, and provide companionship? This valuable ministry provides much needed spiritual support to the sick and homebound in the Parkville community. 3 Grow In Your Faith Catholic Q & A What do the three gifts presented to Jesus represent? Today we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord, the visiting of the Magi to the boy Jesus. It is traditionally celebrated on January 6th, however in the United States, it is transferred to a nearby Sunday. Epiphany comes from a Greek word that means to manifest or make known. The visiting of the Magi fulfilled Old Testament prophesies. " I see him, though not now; I behold him, though not near: A star shall advance from Jacob and a staff shall rise from Israel" (Nm 24:17). Isaiah also prophesied the three gifts brought by the kings: Caravans of camels shall fill you, dromedaries from Midian and Ephah; all from Sheba shall come bearing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the Lord (Isaiah 60:6). Saint Matthew s Gospel also records the three gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Gold is a gift suitable for a king. Frankincense is a gift for a priest, and Jesus is the High Priest. And finally, myrrh is a burial ointment for someone destined to die, as well as used on priests and consecrated objects. However, this symbolism is not divinely inspired truth, and early church fathers have sometimes offered other opinions on the symbolism of the three gifts. Saint of the Day Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton (Aug. 28, 1774 Jan. 4, 1821) Feast Day: January 4 Mother Seton is one of the keystones of the American Catholic Church. She founded the first American religious community for women, the Sisters of Charity. She opened the first American parish school and established the first American Catholic orphanage. All this she did in the span of 46 years while raising her five children. Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton is a true daughter of the American Revolution, born August 28, 1774, just two years before the Declaration of Independence. By birth and marriage, she was linked to the first families of New York and enjoyed the fruits of high society. Reared a staunch Episcopalian, she learned the value of prayer, Scripture and a nightly examination of conscience. Her father, Dr. Richard Bayley, did not have much use for churches but was a great humanitarian, teaching his daughter to love and serve others. The early deaths of her mother in 1777 and her baby sister in 1778 gave Elizabeth a feel for eternity and the temporariness of the pilgrim life on earth. Far from being brooding and sullen, she faced each new holocaust, as she put it, with hopeful cheerfulness. At 19, Elizabeth was the belle of New York and married a handsome, wealthy businessman, William Magee Seton. They had five children before his business failed and he died of tuberculosis. At 30, Elizabeth was widowed, penniless, with five small children to support. While in Italy with her dying husband, Elizabeth witnessed Catholicity in action through family friends. Three basic points led her to become a Catholic: belief in the Real Presence, devotion to the Blessed Mother and conviction that the Catholic Church led back to the apostles and to Christ. Many of her family and friends rejected her when she became a Catholic in March To support her children, she opened a school in Baltimore. From the beginning, her group followed the lines of a religious community, which was officially founded in The thousand or more letters of Mother Seton reveal the development of her spiritual life from ordinary goodness to heroic sanctity. She suffered great trials of sickness, misunderstanding, the death of loved ones (her husband and two young daughters) and the heartache of a wayward son. She died January 4, 1821, and became the first American-born citizen to be beatified (1963) and then canonized (1975). She is buried in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, pray for us! Saint Ursula Parish News and Events SCRIPTURE STUDY Please join us at 7:00pm beginning February 6th for a 6 week study on the Lectio Divina method pf prayer. Lectio Divina is a traditional Benedictine method of prayer focusing on communication with God through his Divine Word. Dr. Tim Gray one again leads us on this exciting journey where we dig deeper in the Word and promote deeper lives of prayer. Seamus is also thankful for the many dog treats and toys he received as well.
