To be honest, I do not know what to say. As a Catholic like yourselves, I am sickened, sad, and angry at the abuse of children. I am disillusioned by the way some bishops, including the late Cardinal Keeler when he was in Harrisburg, sought to cover things up. But, as a pastor entrusted with the care of God s people I, like many others, are called to help bring about healing in some way. Since that time many things happened. Sadly, and rightly so, much anger has been expressed. Many theories as to the cause of such things have also been discussed. And, of course much finger pointing has taken place. Let us not fool ourselves, such things are to be expected in these cases. But, other things have also taken place. Many good people the laity, those in religious life and ordained ministers have through their tears and anger, expressed their anger at the perpetrators of such crimes and their disappointment in those who sought to cover it up. But, through it all, these good people have acknowledged that their Faith in the Church is based not on individuals who through free will can choose to sin, but in God, His son Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and the principles upon which our Faith is founded. In our own Archdiocese, Archbishop Lori, Bishops Madden, Brennan, and Parker have attended many listening sessions in an attempt to hear the voices of all of us who have been hurt by this scandal. While this is not a remedy for our current crisis, it is a beginning. Finally, let us not be so naive as to think the crisis is over. Just like we in the Archdiocese of Baltimore went through the first wave of this crisis back in 2002, many more dioceses will go through such a cleansing of the evils that have been done. So, we must be prepared for more things to be exposed throughout the Church. Remain strong through prayer, remain close to our Lord especially in the Blessed Sacrament. This is not a time to flee, but to fight. And, the weapons with which we fight are prayer, and reaming close to the love of God which is found within the Sacraments. While it was the devil that tempted the individuals who committed these sins, and those who sought to cover up such sins to protect their own stations in life it is the Holy Spirit working to bring these sins to light. For it is only by shedding light on what has been done in darkness that we can live in the truth. Let us continue to pray for victims of past sexual abuse by those who were called to represent Jesus in the Church. Let us pray for healing within our Church. Have a Blessed Week! Mrs. Stephanie Shock Communications Coordinator Stephanie.Shock@archbalt.org

3 GROW IN YOUR FAITH Catholic Q & A What are angels? Saturday we celebrated the great Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, and on Tuesday, we celebrate with the feast of the Guardian Angels. The word angel means messenger or one who is sent. Saints Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel are the only angels explicitly named in Scripture, due to their very important role in salvation history. They are the ones who delivered important messages to people of the Bible. Angels are pure spirit, meaning they are not made of matter. They do not have a body, nor gender. Angels have never been human beings, nor will they become humans (just as humans do not become angels after death). In his book, Angels and Demons, Dr. Peter Kreeft gives the following explanation: Because of their lack of bodies, angels do not occupy space like we do and move within our world without taking up space. The closest analogy to how angels move is like electrons or in quantum leaps. Angels move instantaneously from one place to another without passing through any space or time in between. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 336 tells us From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their [guardian angels] watchful care and intercession. Saint Basil wrote Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life. Guardian angels are sent to protect and guide us. They can help guard our thoughts from impurity and can place good thoughts in our minds. In Psalm 91, verses we read: No evil shall befall you, no scourge come near your tent. For he will give his angels charge of you to guard you in all your ways. Our guardian angels can protect us from spiritual and physical harm, but of course we still have free will, and can override the good work of our guardian angels. We can ask our angels to help us, to intercede for us, to give us strength when we feel tempted, and to keep us safe from physical harm. We can and should have a relationship with our guardian angels, which we can foster through prayer and communication with them. Angels are sometimes thought of as myth, as a leftover from childhood when we prayed Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, or just as something fanciful and mystical, even new age. But since the times of the Old Testament, people have believed not just in guardian angels, but a whole choir of angels, with a hierarchy. Our guardian angels, those of everyone around us, and a myriad of other angels join with us in the Worship of God the Creator at every Mass. The next time you attend Mass, reflect on the unseen beauty and power that surround us. Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing! Revelation of John 5:11 Saint of the Day Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael Saints of the Day for September 29 Angels messengers from God appear frequently in Scripture, but only Michael, Gabriel and Raphael are named. Michael appears in Daniel s vision as the great prince who defends Israel against its enemies; in the Book of Revelation, he leads God s armies to final victory over the forces of evil. Devotion to Michael is the oldest angelic devotion, rising in the East in the fourth century. The Church in the West began to observe a feast honoring Michael and the angels in the fifth century. Gabriel also makes an appearance in Daniel s visions, announcing Michael s role in God s plan. His best-known appearance is an encounter with a young Jewish girl named Mary, who consents to bear the Messiah. Raphael s activity is confined to the Old Testament story of Tobit. There he appears to guide Tobit s son Tobiah through a series of fantastic adventures which lead to a threefold happy ending: Tobiah s marriage to Sarah, the healing of Tobit s blindness, and the restoration of the family fortune. The memorials of Gabriel and Raphael were added to the Roman calendar in The 1970 revision of the calendar joined their individual feasts to Michael s. Saint of the Day reprinted with permission from Franciscan Media. Feast of the Guardian Angels Saints of the Day for October 2 Perhaps no aspect of Catholic piety is as comforting to parents as the belief that an angel protects their little ones from dangers real and imagined. Yet guardian angels are not only for children. Their role is to represent individuals before God, to watch over them always, to aid their prayer, and to present their souls to God at death. The concept of an angel assigned to guide and nurture each human being is a development of Catholic doctrine and piety based on Scripture but not directly drawn from it. Jesus words in Matthew 18:10 best support the belief: See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father. Devotion to the angels began to develop with the birth of the monastic tradition. Saint Benedict gave it impetus and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, the great 12th-century reformer, was such an eloquent spokesman for the guardian angels that angelic devotion assumed its current form in his day. A feast in honor of the guardian angels was first observed in the 16th century. In 1615, Pope Paul V added it to the Roman calendar. Saint of the Day reprinted with permission from Franciscan Media.

Rosary Coast to Coast is inspired by the Rosary on the Border in Poland and the Rosary on the Coast in both Ireland and the UK. We are inviting Catholics across the country to pray together to call upon God through the powerful intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary to heal our country and return it to Holiness. We will pray the rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet during Eucharistic Adoration. Today our battle is spiritual! We continue to live in peace-less times with laws and court rulings in conflict with God s laws; especially the disregard for the rights of the unborn, elderly and weak in our society and the attacks on marriage and family values. Society and many levels of government continue to demonstrate intolerance towards biblically based religious belief and practice. In conflict with First Amendment constitutional rights, persecution of traditional religious expression has reached historically high levels. ANNIVERSARY MASS The next Anniversary Mass is October 7th. Please call the office to register if you would like to be celebrated and receive a blessing. MEN S PRAYER GROUP All men are invited to come to the Spiritual Center at 7:15am Saturday, October 6th, (and the 1st Saturday each month) for coffee, donuts and an open discussion related to our faith and the challenges we face in every day life. We open with prayer then our discussion forum. At 8:30 we attend the morning Mass together. After Mass we finish up in the spiritual center reading the Sunday Gospel and reflecting on its meaning. Please pray with us! MAGNIFICAT Your old Magnificats may left in the bin in the vestibule. They will be used to minister to prisoners. Thank you!
