2 Dear Friends, A Note from our Pastor Jesus teaches that giving alms means making the needs of others our own. People all around us need Jesus, they need us to be generous of ourselves. Everyone, young and old, the sick and the suffering, families and individuals, our neighbors next door and those in lands far away. It is easy forget them. Rather than just looking out for ourselves, we need to see those in need, Jesus says. Giving will bring you life. What shall we give? Some time, some of our talent, our material resources. Almsgiving is not just for the rich. Poor or rich, we all have something to give. Whatever we give - should be from the heart, something that costs us. Paradoxically, Jesus also teaches that when we give, we receive something in return - grace upon grace. What shall we give to the needy during this Lent? In deciding, decide generously. After all, before us is the great command which Jesus Himself gave: Love one another, as I have loved you. I encourage you to pray in a special way this Lent for a deeper conversion to the Lord. Many find it helpful to go beyond just weekend Mass attendance. Here are a few ways you might deepen your Spiritual life during this Holy Season: Celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation Attend Mass during the week (Monday - Saturday 8:30am) Offer to bring someone who is just curious about the Catholic faith and our church, to St. Ursula for Mass or an event. Attend the Stations of the Cross on Fridays (7:00pm), followed by Soup & Salad and wonderful fellowship. Pray the Liturgy of the Hours Pray the Rosary Do some extra spiritual reading Offer to take a senior citizen to Mass with you. Talk to a young person about what the Catholic faith has meant for you in your life. May this Lent continue to be a Holy Season. May it be a time of renewal and re-creation for you that you may grow closer in you love of God. Have a blessed week! The works of mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbor in his spiritual and bodily necessities. (CCC 2447). Among those works of mercy are corporal works and spiritual works of mercy. The corporal works of mercy are the ones we may be more familiar with, and include feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned, and burying the dead. The spiritual works of mercy are no less important, and include counseling the doubtful, instructing the ignorant, admonishing the sinner, comforting the sorrowful, forgiving injuries, bearing wrongs patiently, and praying for the living and the dead. #ServeChrist Practical Application: How can I practice a work of mercy this week? Forgiving injuries is a spiritual work of mercy that everyone could practice this week. Every day, we are given opportunities to forgive, or to hold grudges, gossip, or be negative. But how can we hold grudges or refuse forgiveness from others while asking for and accepting Christ s forgiveness? For Christ says in Ephesians 4:31 All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ. Your challenge this week is two fold: when someone wrongs you, pray to the Lord to soften your heart so you can be free of anger, and offer them forgiveness, and second, think of someone from whom you have been withholding forgiveness. Pray for the Lord to soften your heart, to offer them forgiveness, and be free from the bitterness you have been holding onto. Serve one another humbly in love. Galatians 5:13
3 Catholic Q & A Grow In Your Faith Saint of the Day I ve heard of the three pillars of Lent, but what are they? The three traditional pillars of Lent are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. We all know how important prayer is. Maybe we only know it intellectually, because we never get around to actually praying. Sometimes prayer can seem tedious, like a chore, or another thing to cross off of our to-do lists. So, if prayer isn t an integral part of your life, how do you get started? Just start. Set aside 5 minutes each day to truly focus on Christ and having a conversation with Him. That doesn t mean rambling off the Lord s Prayer and a Hail Mary and calling it a day, although those prayers can be a starting point. If you really have no idea what to say, go ahead and start with the Lord s Prayer, but pray it slowly, thinking about each word and phrase, stopping to ponder. Forgive us our trespasses. What have you done today that you want to repent of? As we forgive those who trespass against us. Who do you need to forgive in your life? We are all familiar with the requirement to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Maybe you are being called to fast more frequently, or throughout the year? If you are exempt from fasting due to age or health, perhaps you can fast from cream in your coffee, from TV or social media, from drinks other than water. As lastly we come to almsgiving. Doesn t it seem like someone is always asking for money? Sometimes it can be hard to feel generous when we feel like we are always being asked for money for this cause, or that fundraiser. But supporting the Church, her mission, caring for the poor these are integral parts of being a Christian. We should try to give with a spirit of gratitude for all God has blessed us with, and we should always include prayer as part of our almsgiving. How is God calling you to share your treasure? Blessed Sebastian of Aparicio Saint of the Day for February 25 Sebastian s roads and bridges connected many distant places. His final bridge-building was to help men and women recognize their God-given dignity and destiny. Sebastian s parents were Spanish peasants. At the age of 31, he sailed to Mexico, where he began working in the fields. Eventually he built roads to facilitate agricultural trading and other commerce. His 466-mile road from Mexico City to Zacatecas took 10 years to build and required careful negotiations with the indigenous peoples along the way. In time Sebastian was a wealthy farmer and rancher. At the age of 60, he entered a virginal marriage. His wife s motivation may have been a large inheritance; his was to provide a respectable life for a girl without even a modest marriage dowry. When his first wife died, he entered another virginal marriage for the same reason; his second wife also died young. At the age of 72, Sebastian distributed his goods among the poor and entered the Franciscans as a brother. Assigned to the large (100-member) friary at Puebla de los Angeles south of Mexico City, Sebastian went out collecting alms for the friars for the next 25 years. His charity to all earned him the nickname Angel of Mexico. Sebastian was beatified in 1787 and is known as a patron of travelers.
