2 JUNE 17TH 2018 Dear Friends, RECTOR S COMMENTARY BY FR. JAMES BORIC, RECTOR First of all, I just want to comment on how powerful last week s 10:45 Mass and Eucharistic procession were. As you know, I was really hoping we could walk the streets and bless our city with the Eucharist for the feast of Corpus Christi. But, the rain and wind prevented us from going outside. In a way, I think that was divine providence. I really felt like God was saying to us, let me bless you all first. Then you will be ready to hit the streets and bless the people. As I was walking through the Basilica last Sunday with the Body and Blood of Christ, I could feel the power. I saw your faces as I passed by with Christ and it was inspiring. The faith I saw in everyone s eyes was amazing. I could tell people were really praying. I could feel that people were asking for healing spiritual, physical and psychological. I could tell you KNEW that was God in the monstrance. One person came to me after the Mass and said she experienced a physical healing! This is the power of God. This is why I want the Basilica to become radically associated with the Eucharist! I am working feverishly on a plan to keep the Basilica open until 8PM Monday through Friday so people can come and pray and experience healing, hope and peace. I wrote a promotion which I will be sending to all of my friends, family and acquaintances asking for their help, their donations and their prayers. I feel (with everything in me) that our gates have to be open. When I preach that the City of Baltimore needs the Eucharist, I truly mean it. If we believe that the Eucharist IS God, how can we do any better than to make God accessible to the City? What program, subsidy, project or plan could be more powerful than introducing the God of the Universe? The answer is: there isn t one! It is my vision that people of all faiths come to the Basilica during the day and come to know of God s power. I want them to experience the oasis in the desert. In the beginning, they may not understand the peace they feel. They may just associate it with the beauty of our building. But, after a while, they will come to realize that it is God who is giving them that peace. And then they will want what we have. In addition to just opening the Basilica, I also am working on providing confessions in the evenings so that as businessmen and women finish work they can come to the Basilica for spiritual healing and nourishment. What an impact this will have on families, marriages and relationships in general! Finally, I envision the Basilica becoming a place where the thousands of people at Johns Hopkins Hospital (and others) can come for healing. How amazing would it be if, after the 12:10 Mass, people could come to the priest for healing and comfort and solace? So, we have a lot of work to do. But I am excited (and nervous) to embark on this journey. God is the answer for every question we have. We just need to go to Him more often. My desire is to make Him so accessible to the City that they can t help but come to know Him, love Him and serve Him. Listen to Fr. James s In Christ, BASILICA STAFF Most Reverend William E. 3 JUNE 17TH 2018 COMMENTARY BY JEFFREY ALLAN PRIMARY ELECTIONS MASS INTENTIONS Gospel, Mark 4:26-34 The scattering of seed which sprouts and grows is explained by Saint Jerome as the preaching of the Gospel and knowledge of the Scriptures which makes the Kingdom of God grow in the heart of man. Saint Ambrose speaks of the mustard seed as such: If the Kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, and faith is like to a grain of mustard seed, faith is then truly the Kingdom of heaven, and the Kingdom of heaven is faith. He therefore that has faith possesses the Kingdom of heaven. And the Kingdom of heaven is within us, and faith is within us. Now let us, from the nature of the mustard seed, estimate the force of this comparison. Its seed is indeed very plain, and of little value; but if bruised or crushed it shows forth its power. So, faith first seems a simple thing, but if it is bruised by its enemies it gives forth proof of its power, so as to fill others who hear or read of it with the odor of its sweetness. And we are called to live out this faith as Saint Aphraates teaches us: It is not enough to read and to study the Sacred Scriptures; we must fulfill them also. observe that parables have more explanations than one: some more easy while others are more difficult to understand. In parables, the multitude understood the more literal interpretation, while Christ explains the more abstruse and hidden sense to His apostles. Interesting that by Jesus explaining the parables to His disciples in private seems to delineate inklings of the Magisterium or teaching authority of the Church. Although Jesus no longer walks the earth, the Magisterium can teach the faith by the power of the Holy Spirit. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS The Baltimore Basilica Council is actively involved in both the Basilica Parish and the local community in providing support and fundraising activities that are the hallmark of a well respected fraternal organization. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Knights of Columbus, and helping to serve not only the Basilica family, but our local community. It is critical to remember that the Primary Election decides many races in our state, particularly in districts that historically elect only candidates from one party, so the Maryland Catholic Conference is asking all Catholics to please consider voting this June. VOCATIONS Be An America s 1st Cathedral Tour Guide: An Outstanding Volunteer Opportunity The Basilica/Cathedral of the Assumption has a rich 200+ year history in the formation of not only the Archdiocese of Baltimore, but the Catholic Church in the United States. Thousands of visitors have experienced, not only the overwhelming architectural beauty, but the subdued yet powerful sacredness of this Benjamin Latrobe designed cathedral, America s First Cathedral. Since the restoration and grand reopening in 2006, and integral to the mission of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, America s First Cathedral tour guides have selflessly contributed to sharing that amazing story with our thousands of visitors. Today, our tour guides continue to be that welcoming and knowledgeable presence representing America s First Cathedral, greeting the thousands of visitors, pilgrims and school tours, to the Baltimore Basilica/Cathedral. So that this important service to the church and the Archdiocese may continue, the Basilica/Cathedral is in need of additional volunteer tour guides interested in learning and sharing this message of Catholic and American history, Catholic faith and timeless architecture. Training, shadowing and copies of valuable historical documentation, will be offered to all qualified volunteers. All that is needed is a love of faith, history and architecture, in addition to your willingness to share both your time and your dedication in bringing this experience to our many visitors. If you are interested or require additional information, please contact the parish office at: x220, or bob.reier@archbalt.org. B'M ORE VOCATIONS HEAR GOD'S CALL!
