2 A Note from our Youth Minister After reading and reflecting on the Gospel this week, I m reminded of a gift I got not too long ago from a family of one of our teens. I know what you re thinking - Jackie, the Gospel was about driving out demons so this better be one heck of a comparison. I promise it is! She walked into the Spiritual Center one Sunday night and handed me a bag and told me to open it because she had to explain it. I open it and find some lotion, a calendar, and candy - what a nice gift (not relating to demons at all). Then, from the bottom of the bag I pull out a sealed bottle of blessed salt and water. As I lift it up and start to ask what it is, she exclaims, It s exorcism juice! (It s blessed by a priest saying exorcism prayers - no exorcisms took place). Before you say What? I can t believe we re paying this 22-year-old kid to be responsible for our teens, let me assure you that I have never had a demon possess me, nor have we had any demons in our Youth Ministry at St. Ursula. However, I can honestly say it is one of the most thoughtful and unique Christmas gifts I ve ever received and I ll never stop laughing at exorcism juice. The Gospel this weekend tells us that Jesus can command even the unclean spirits and they obey Him. In today s world, we re faced with unclean spirits from all angles; they try and drive a wedge between us and God. Maybe it s a friend, a coworker, or even a family member. Maybe your unclean spirit is a possession or habit that keeps you from spending time and energy with Jesus. This week, let us remember that we don t need to face these demons ourselves. We don t need to be armed with our own exorcism juice. Let us remember that Jesus can command even the unclean spirits and they obey Him. Let us remember to put our trust in Jesus first. Keep praying for us because we promise we re always praying for you! Jackie Serve Christ is our parish s theme for this liturgical year. Each parishioner is challenged to find ways to serve others in their everyday lives, because it is through serving others that we serve Christ, and by serving Christ, we grow in love and knowledge of Him, who is our salvation. The works of mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbor in his spiritual and bodily necessities. (CCC 2447). Among those works of mercy are corporal works and spiritual works of mercy. The corporal works of mercy are the ones we may be more familiar with, and include feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned, and burying the dead. The spiritual works of mercy are no less important, and include counseling the doubtful, instructing the ignorant, admonishing the sinner, comforting the sorrowful, forgiving injuries, bearing wrongs patiently, and praying for the living and the dead. Practical Application: How can I practice a work of mercy this week? We recently challenged you to consider the corporal work of mercy, visiting the sick, by participating in our outreach program, visiting the sick or homebound. Included in this ministry are also the spiritual works of comforting the sorrowful and praying for the living. There is a real need for this in particular on Saturday mornings. We are in need of current Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to commit to one Saturday per month in which they would attend daily Mass at 8:30, and then take Holy Communion to Morning Side Assisted Living Community. You will participate in the 10am prayer service, and finish by 10:30am. Please contact Sandy Smith at if you are able to participate in this ministry. #ServeChrist Serve one another humbly in love. Galatians 5:13

3 Grow In Your Faith PRAYER FOR OUR PARISH Lord, I come before you today with a humble heart. I ask that you open the hearts of every parishioner of Saint Ursula Parish. Give us all hearts on fire for You and help us to desire you more. May every one of us make Sunday Mass a priority, and put You first in our lives. Open our hearts and minds so we may know Your Holy Will for us, and give us the courage to faithfully follow you. Loving God, thank you for the gift of the priests who shepherd us, and bring Christ to us in the Sacraments. Help our priests to be strong in faith. Set their hearts on fire for love of Christ and all of Christ s people. Strengthen in them the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. Thank you, Lord, for the staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to provide for the spiritual needs of the parish. May they continue to lead people to Christ, and be an example of love and service to others in the parish. Help them to faithfully follow You and Your Holy Church. Give them strength in the face of temptation, adversity, and indifference. Saint of the Day Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225 March 7, 1274) Feast Day: January 28 By universal consent, Thomas Aquinas is the preeminent spokesman of the Catholic tradition of reason and of divine revelation. He is one of the great teachers of the medieval Catholic Church, honored with the titles Doctor of the Church and Angelic Doctor. At five he was given to the Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino in his parents hopes that he would choose that way of life and eventually became abbot. In 1239, he was sent to Naples to complete his studies. It was here that he was first attracted to Aristotle s philosophy. By 1243, Thomas abandoned his family s plans for him and joined the Dominicans, much to his mother s dismay. On her order, Thomas was captured by his brother and kept at home for over a year. Revive our parish, Lord, and use all the individuals prayed for today to bring about a renewed zeal. May we be Missionary Disciples in a world in desperate need of You. We ask all this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. FORMED is a website containing a variety of content - talks, scripture studies, movies, documentaries, books, children s content - all Catholic, and all available at your fingertips! Listen/watch on your computer, tablet, or phone, via a cable hookup to your TV, or on your Apple device via the new App! On FORMED, you can read books by Scott Hahn, Tim Gray, Thomas Dubay, and more. Have a family movie night with Mother Theresa, Maria Goretti, Padre Pio, Joan of Arc, Don Bosco, and many more of your favorite Saints. Watch a documentary about the devil, Fatima, Our Lady of Guadeloupe, the Knights of Columbus, and more! Visit and register with the parish code 9b47c9 Once free, he went to Paris and then to Cologne, where he finished his studies with Albert the Great. He held two professorships at Paris, lived at the court of Pope Urban IV, directed the Dominican schools at Rome and Viterbo, combated adversaries of the mendicants, as well as the Averroists, and argued with some Franciscans about Aristotelianism. His greatest contribution to the Catholic Church is his writings. The unity, harmony, and continuity of faith and reason, of revealed and natural human knowledge, pervades his writings. One might expect Thomas, as a man of the gospel, to be an ardent defender of revealed truth. But he was broad enough, deep enough, to see the whole natural order as coming from God the Creator, and to see reason as a divine gift to be highly cherished. The Summa Theologiae, his last and, unfortunately, uncompleted work, deals with the whole of Catholic theology. He stopped work on it after celebrating Mass on December 6, When asked why he stopped writing, he replied, I cannot go on. All that I have written seems to me like so much straw compared to what I have seen and what has been revealed to me. He died March 7, Saint Thomas, pray for us!
