1 Sunday, September 2, 2018 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time I am the vine, you are the branches. Saint Isaac Jogues Parish is a branch of the true vine, Jesus Christ. Our goal is to continue to build the kingdom of God while recognizing the need to remain in Christ. God has chosen us to go forth and bear much fruit, through our ministries of Liturgy, Faith Formation, Service, Stewardship, and Evangelization We are challenged to balance God s laws with our love of others. Sometimes, like the Pharisees, we place rules and conditions on how we share our love and who is worthy of receiving the gifts and love we have to offer. Jesus is both faithful to the law of Moses and to the immediate needs of the people before him. He is the perfect example of a hearer and doer of God s word. Today we are called to be and do the same. Sue Robb, Celebration Publications First Reading: Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8 Second Reading: James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27 Gospel: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, SUMMER HOURS (May 25 - September 28) Monday-Thursday: 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Friday: 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM

2 From From the ThePastor Pastor Blessings on your Labor Day weekend! This Monday we celebrate the dignity of work and workers and our young people return to school. (I think the parents are more excited than the children!) Recently I was reminded of a story that took place shortly after World War II. A group of Germans were restoring one of the cathedrals in England that has been devastated by the Luftwaffe bombings. In the church was a large statue of Jesus, only his hands had been blown off from the air attack from the war. At the bottom of the statue were the words, Come to Me, but they didn t seem to fit now that Christ was without hands. After some time of reflection, those restoring the statue decided that they would leave the statue without the hands and placed a plaque with the words: God has no hands but yours. It was a reference from a prayer written by St. Teresa of Avila, which can be found on page 5. On this Sunday where we are reminded to be not just hearers of the word, but doers of the Word, may we be Christ s hands and feet to the world. Peace, Fr. Brian Preparation for Next Sunday Readings for the TwentyThird Sunday in Ordinary Time - Cycle B, Worship 937 Isaiah 35:4-7a God s saving power brings springs of water to the desert. This is one of the most challenging questions and situations for all of us. We will spend this entire Liturgy month on this topic. Corner Whenever we invite someone to join us for Mass, our hope is they have a great experience. Our faith means a great deal to us and we want to share it with others. We pray for good music, stellar preaching and friendly faces. But if we haven t fully prepared our guest, a very awkward moment may ensue. The Catholic Church rightly teaches that those at Mass who are not Catholic or who are not in a state of grace should abstain from receiving the Eucharist and instead, ask for a blessing or make a spiritual communion. Oftentimes non-catholic visitors tend to view this as a slight of sorts or as a judgmental lack of hospitality or charity on the part of the Church when, in fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Next week we will hear more on this. Mark Hart, Behold the Mystery

Jude s annual report, dollars given specifically to the school feeding program provided hot lunches for 625 elementary aged students four times weekly and 160 middle-schoolers two to three times weekly. This past March, our parish mission team witnessed excellent stewardship of food/fuel resources for this ambitious program. Contributions, not made specifically to the feeding program, were used to pay modest salaries to teachers, catechists and sacristans who directly serve all members of our sister parish. Feeding body, mind and spirit have always been the focus of our loving outreach to Haiti.
