November 2017 Edition Volume 2017 Issue 11 November 5th 2017 Charge Conference, Sunday, November 5th 3:00pm Clemmons United Methodist Church Everyone is invited to come and our key leaders expected to be in attendance. Connection means everything. We cannot survive, much less thrive, without being connected. We are made to thrive! On November 19 th, we are asking you to make your PLEDGE Commitment to Maple Springs for support during the year Whether you have always pledged or this is your first pledge, EVERY PLEDGE MATTERS! Pledging helps us to make an accurate assessment of exactly WHAT we can fund in the coming year. Our Finance Committee wants to be able to fully fund all of our ministries which are connections with God, each other, and our community. YOUR PLEDGE MATTERS! If you have never pledged, I want to invite you to take some time praying about the way that you can step up and support your Church. The Bible says that we are to tithe, which means give at a 10 percent level. If you are giving at this level, then you understand that God blesses this gift in amazing ways. If you are not giving at this level, then would you consider stepping up another level in your giving? Finally, I want to invite 100% participation in this campaign. Even if you have never pledged, I want this to be your first time. My prayer is that you will evaluate your priorities and include Maple Springs and our connections in your budgeting. You will receive more information as the campaign progresses and receive a pledge card in the mail so that you can come on November 19 th ready to turn in your pledge card. We hope to wrap up our campaign by November 30 th so that we can turn our faces toward the blessed season of Advent. Will you help this to happen? In Christ s Service, Jeff

Disaster Ministry/Early Response Team United Methodists in Disaster Ministry/Early Response Team Training or ERT Our world has seen natural disasters strike early and often this year. While some folks in the eastern part of our state are still putting back the pieces after Hurricane Matthew last year, Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria wreaked havoc during the most recent hurricane season. What can we do? We have stepped up and responded by generously donating to UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief. As a reminder, 100% of any donation made to UMCOR goes directly to the cause. We have also assembled flood buckets and hygiene kits, which are donated to UMCOR. Thank you for your response! But sometimes we are called to take another step, a literal step into an area with great need after a natural disaster. Early Response Team is a way to be involved immediately after a natural disaster has hit. As Rev. Tom Hazelwood, assistant general secretary of UMCOR puts it, In the hours and days after disaster, those who survive are looking for anything to give them hope. ERTs can provide the kind of immediate response that restores hope, builds faith, and encourages those who are looking to their neighbor for support. The mission of ERTs is to fill specific needs in the early days after disaster strikes. ERTs are not first responders providing emergency care, but rather work to help clean out flooded homes, place tarps on damaged buildings and homes, and remove debris so that the task of rebuilding can begin. All this is done while providing a caring Christian presence as we seek to be the hands and feet of Christ. Basic ERT member training is an eight-hour class, where the very basics of disaster response are learned. If you are interested in becoming a part of an Early Response Team, there will be a training class on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at Christ UMC in Greensboro. If you have questions please see Betsy in the church office, or Pastor Gary for more information. Brochures with more information are available in the lobby of Craven Hall, outside the church administration office, and in the hallway outside the sanctuary. Page 3

Operation Shoebox Operation Shoebox is Underway! Volunteers will be at each entrance on Sunday morning November 5 with brochures and to answer questions. The brochures will also be available in the Craven Hall lobby during the week. The brochures list appropriate items to include in the boxes and labels for the boxes. NEW FOR 2017: Items which cannot be included beginning this year are candy, toothpaste and lip gloss. Also the donation to cover shipping and other project costs has been increased to $9.00 per box. If do not want to pack a box, you may make a financial contribution to Samaritan s Purse OCC to help with the costs of the project. Please put your donation in the brochure envelope and put it in the offering plate by November 12. The filled boxes are due back to Maple Springs by SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 12 and they will be dedicated at the 8:45 and 11:00 services. 5 Red Bird Mission & Henderson Settlement Being a part of the United Methodist Church means being connected to every other United Methodist Church. We are a connectional church. Because of that, we have connection to many areas of ministry, in our community, in our conference, in our state, nationally, and internationally. We can respond to a national crisis through UMCOR, United Methodist Committee on Relief. We can volunteer with short term building teams, nationally and internationally through UMVIM, United Methodist Volunteers in Mission. And we can be a part of much needed, vital ministries in many ways. The Red Bird Missionary Conference is a conference in southeastern Kentucky. It is one of three missionary conferences of the United Methodist Church in the country. The other two are Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference and Alaska Missionary Conference. A missionary conference simple means that the conference serves in an area where local resources cannot meet the needs; therefore, mission support from the whole church is necessary. There are two vital ongoing missions that are in The Red Bird Missionary Conference. They are Red Bird Mission and Henderson Settlement. Both missions are independent of each other even though they are in the same conference. Both missions serve in isolated, rural, distressed areas of Appalachia. How can we be involved? First and most importantly, pray. Pray not only for the people in the area, but pray that we know how to best respond as we seek to live out our call to be the hands and feet of Christ. Pray that we not only offer financial resources or hands on help, but that we offer them hope, we offer them Christ. In a very tangible way we can be involved in Red Bird Mission and Henderson Settlement. Our financial resources are needed. Our time and talents are needed. Pray that we will respond to the need by stepping up and stepping out to serve. Are you being called to serve for a week working at either Red Bird or Henderson Settlement? We hope to have a team in place to serve next year. If you are interested or want more information, please see Pastor Gary. We can also help by donating box tops. That s right box tops from General Mills products. Box Tops for Education is a simple, but helpful (and needed) item which only requires a minute of your time. We have two containers for box top collection, one in Craven Hall lobby and the other is located in the hallway outside the sanctuary. Last year we sent 1800 box tops to Red Bird Mission. Campbell s soup labels are no longer redeemable, but box tops are. They can be redeemed to help purchase much needed supplies in the Red Bird School. We can give in many ways! Sometimes it s our financial resources, sometimes it s giving our time, sometimes it s just a minute to cut off a box top and place it in a collection container at church. To learn more about Red Bird Missionary Conference visit You can read about both Red Bird Mission and Henderson Settlement on that website. Page 5

Creation Care Ministry What is our Christian response to caring for God s creation? Not our political response, but what is our responsibility as Christians to be good stewards of the environment. At Maple Springs we are forming a new Creation Care Ministry beginning in January The committee will be led by Kim Richmond, and is a work in progress. This committee is being formed as a way of us as a church practicing good stewardship. In the Pastoral Letter, God s Renewed Creation: Call to Hope and Action, the Bishops of the United Methodist Church state: God s creation is in crisis. We, the Bishops of the United Methodist Church, cannot remain silent while God s people and God s planet suffer. This beautiful natural world is a loving gift from God, the Creator of all things seen and unseen We must begin the work of renewing creation by being renewed in our own hearts and minds. We cannot help the world until we change our own way of being in it. We invite you to join in as we reacquaint ourselves with the beauty and awe and wonder of God s creation and as we learn more about the theological basis for creation care. (It really is about more than just the first two chapters of Genesis). God created a perfectly designed interconnected system, which has been degraded and polluted. What is our part in being a good steward of this perfect gift? What are positive lifestyle changes we could make, which will help in the restoration of His very good creation? As a church we have begun to make some critical decisions with regard to energy consumption. Much of the lighting throughout the building has been replaced or retrofitted with energy efficient LED lighting, significantly reducing our energy consumption. Additionally, we are working with an HVAC contractor to improve our heating and cooling systems. This is a win/win/win situation. Becoming more efficient means less energy consumed. It s better for the environment and we spend less money on energy, which allows us to direct that money to other ministry areas. But there are other areas where we could improve on our environmental impact and celebrate God s goodness. Help us explore these areas by becoming involved in this Creation Care Ministry. If you would like to become a part of this vital team please contact Kim Richmond at srichmond13@triad.rr.com or cell number , or contact Pastor Gary at the church. The referenced Pastoral Letter and related Foundation Document are available at Page 8

Missions 2017 UMAR Luncheon, Thursday, November 9th, 12:00 noon, Craven Hall: The annual UMAR luncheon is coming up soon! While many of you have attended the luncheon in the past, here is a quick overview of what it's all about. The luncheon will last for an hour, there will be a light lunch served, there is no cost for attending, the local UMAR residents will be there, there will be crafts for sale, and there will be several speakers to share the UMAR story. It will be extremely uplifting! While there is no cost, it is a fundraising luncheon so at the end, everyone will be given a chance to make a donation. It's not required but UMAR obviously hopes that we can all support their mission in some way. Everyone is welcome but UMAR does need a head count so if you would like to come, please RSVP to Evelyn Ochs (336) or Bill Blackburn at billblackburn55@gmail.com. Thanksgiving meal bags will be collected throughout October for the Food Pantry. Please consider picking up a bag with the list of needed items at either church service for the next few Sundays. Thank you in advance for your giving. These bags will be distributed on November 14th, 15th and 21st. Blessings to you all, Scott and the Food Pantry Volunteers. For more information, please contact Scott Andree Bowen at scott@maplesprings.org. Prison Ministry: The Prison Ministry will be collecting stick or solid antiperspirant during the month of November. For more information about this ministry, please contact Pete Venable at oelkers9@msn.com. **There is a lot going on in the various missions of the church. Thanks go out to all for all your support of our missions program!! Page 9

Odds and Ends... You are invited for Prayer and Communion at 6:30 each Wednesday evening in the Sanctuary. This is a quiet service, observing silence, prayer, and celebrating the Lord's Supper. Come to the quiet and put aside the busyness of life, even if for a moment. These are the words that a church member shared recently: "...I was invited to go to a church service after dinner and I accepted. I went unplanned with 3 other women and the service was about peace and prayer and silence. I felt peace and even though I have felt the Holy Spirit give me strength/peace through my difficult transition tonight was different. Beautiful. Heart warming. We had communion and we al went to the altar to pray together..." The plan is for this service to continue each week, not just after the first Wednesday meal. Church Directory update. We are in the process of checking the data for the church directory. Our Elexio system is also being upgraded and this will present a better directory! I anticipate the release date to be January/February. In the meantime, if you procrastinated and did not get your picture done for the directory, we will be offering a few more opportunities! Stay tuned! ~ Betsy Page 10
