1 June 2018 Edition Volume 2018 Issue 6 Concerns, Thanks, & Praise from the Finance Committee As of April 30th, the all-important Operating Fund has received gifts and pledge payments of $329,146.13, with expenses over the same period of $312, This is the fund from which the great majority of the church s bills are paid. A major concern for us is the traditional summer swoon in church giving. In a typical year, the church accumulates a surplus in late winter and spring. This surplus is needed to offset weak giving during the summer months. For example, in 2017, the operating fund increased by $49,917 from January 1st to April 30th and then declined by $44,922 from May 1st to September 30th. As of April 30th, the operating fund has increased year to date by $16,967 to a total of $42,808. This means we simply don t have the wiggle room in the budget for the kind of summer giving declines we have seen in past years. We have already cut the church s annual budget and hope to see those savings play out in our favor. Our first action to prevent the operating fund from falling to dangerously low levels is to inform our members of the church s need which is the primary purpose of this article. Inside this issue... Ordinary Time 3 June Events 4 New Offerings 5 Women s News 6 & 7 Missions 8-12 Children 13 & 14 Our Church Family 15 Birthdays & Anniversaries 16 Should a request to the congregation not prove adequate, a next step would be to reduce our monthly payment on our apportionment. Should we be forced to do this, we would try to make it up later in the year, but actually doing so would be quite difficult. Some of you may ask why Trust and Endowment funds could not be used to help with the shortfall. Unfortunately, all of our Trust and Endowment Funds are dedicated to one purpose or another the great majority being for Trustees. They cannot be used to pay day-to-day bills. continues on page 2

This is the lowest level of debt the church has carried since ground was broken on Craven Hall in the mid 1990 s. 3 Ordinary Time by Pastor Gary When we live our lives in the church we become more aware of the different seasons of the Christian year. We observe Advent in preparation for Christmas. We look to Epiphany and the Light of Christ being revealed to the world. We live through the weeks of Lent, preparing for Holy Week and resurrection hope at Easter. We then live through the days of Eastertide leading to Pentecost. We celebrate the unleashing of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2: 1-21) and the birthday of the church. We observe Trinity Sunday and embrace God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. This is our belief. We are Easter people and we are Trinitarian. But after that we enter into a season in the church year called Ordinary time. In the traditional service we see the color green for this entire season, which lasts until the end of November and culminates with Christ the King Sunday. Ordinary time. I will admit, that used to bother me a little. Is that the best the church fathers could come up with, I thought to myself? Just plain old ordinary time? Actually the term ordinary time doesn t mean plain or mundane or uneventful. It means a counting of the days, as in the days and weeks of the church year being numbered. It represents ordered life in the church not the high holy days. That simple term represents the days of living our lives in the church in watchfulness and expectation. But isn t that where we live most of our lives? Not every day is a feast day, or a special holiday. Most days are simply ordinary in many respects. When I look at church life at Maple Springs, however, I see anything but ordinary. I witness confirmation and three young people making a commitment to Christ and to this church. I witness baptism and the power of Holy Spirit moving among us. I witness Hope meals being packed and delivered Sunday after Sunday. It is more than just an ordinary meal; it is literal hope for those who would otherwise go hungry. I witness the food pantry and the difference a bag of groceries makes in the life of someone who would otherwise go without. I witness behind the scenes things that take place, often anonymously, in the name of Christ. A wheelchair ramp being built for someone in the community, storm damage clean up after a devastating spring storm, ongoing collections and support of Old Town Elementary School, anonymous gifts for someone in need, ministries in the jail and prison to offer hope for those who have little hope, and on and on and on. These may be things that don t often get a lot of attention. There is often not a lot of flag waving or tooting a horn to draw attention to these mighty acts. But they are powerful things that take place in the name of Christ, done by the ordinary followers of Jesus right here at Maple Springs. I consider it an honor and privilege to serve an extraordinary congregation doing these ordinary things day in and day out, week in and week out, during this ordinary season of the church year. Church life at Maple Springs is anything but ordinary; it is powerful, it is beautiful, and yes, it is sometimes messy. But it serves as a witness to the mighty acts of Jesus alive and moving among us and through us. Both Jeff and I are grateful to be returning for another year, under the appointment of the bishop and cabinet, to serve this extraordinary body of Christ, during all of the seasons of the church year, including ordinary time. Grace and Peace, Gary Page 3

9 Missions Red Bird Mission / Boxtops: For many years we have collected General Mills Box Tops for the Red Bird Missionary Conference in eastern Kentucky. Box tops are able to be redeemed and used to help with purchase of supplies and equipment for the mission. Most recently we mailed 1400 box tops. While that is something to celebrate, last year we sent in 1900 box tops. We have collection boxes in Craven Hall lobby and in the hallway narthex next to the sanctuary. The Red Bird Missionary Conference is the largest United Methodist mission in the United States. They strive to meet the needs of residents in five areas: K-12 school health and wellness clinics, community housing, spiritual growth and a wide variety of ministries to families, older adults, children and youth. By saving the box tops from General Mills products, and donating them to the church, we are able to help fund this much needed mission. Please donate your box tops! Old Town School Ministry: We recently made a $3,000 donation to the weekend meals program. On May 3rd, Maple Springs had six volunteers participating in a meal bag packing event. Together we packed a total of 550 weekend meal bags. For more information, please contact Kay Tuttle at Burn Unit Ministry: Volunteers from our congregation continue to provide Tea For The Soul to nurses and staff at the WFBMC Burn Unit once per month. We provide coffee, tea, sandwiches, snacks, loving support, and a brief respite if the staff can take a moment from their busy shift. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Lynn Bailey rlbailey58@att.net. Prison Ministry: Maple Springs recently made a $300 donation to support the recent Fun With Fathers event. Offenders are required to take three parenting classes in order to participate. In addition, Maple Springs served as the drop off and pick up point for children. They came to Maple Springs and boarded busses to take them to Camp Hanes and then returned to Maple Springs. For more information, please contact Peter Venable at oelkers9@msn.com. UMAR: We donated $2,000 to the three UMAR homes in Winston Salem. In addition, we provided a new TV for the Waddell House. For more information contact Bill Blackburn at billblackburn55@gmail.com. Mission Trip To Henderson Settlement: Mark your calendar! The week of September 23rd - 28th we are planning a mission trip to Henderson Settlement in Frakes, Kentucky. This is a United Methodist mission in the coal mining region of eastern Kentucky, and is part of the Red Bird Missionary Conference. We will have an informational/organizational meeting on Monday, June 4th at 7:00pm in the conference room. If you have any interest please join us please contact Pastor Gary at gary@maplesprings.org. 10 World Vision & BBQ Sponsoring Two Children in Need The Missions and Outreach Committee pledged ongoing funds to sponsor two children through World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization helping children, families, and their communities overcome poverty and injustice. This sponsorship is designed to bring a heightened and more personal awareness of the needs of our global neighbors to our church family and has the support of our Children s Ministry and Youth Program. The children and youth of our church will help with gifts to these children on special occasions such as a birthday, Christmas, and Easter. We are pleased to introduce you to Mervedie, an 8 year old girl living with her parents and four siblings in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Nelson, an 11 year old boy living with his father and four siblings in Haiti. Both have been waiting more than a year for sponsorship. We will provide updates about their lives and share correspondence and photographs as they become available. Please pray for these two children and for all such children in need around the world. For more information, contact Kim Richmond at srichmond13@triad.rr.com. BBQ Our Annual BBQ was our most successful BBQ to date with over $4,000 in net profit which will be donated to the Food Pantry. Page 10

11 Creation Care Quarterly Guest Speaker Series on Creation Care Topics The Creation Care Ministry had the pleasure of hosting its first in a series of quarterly presentations by guest speakers focusing on a wide variety of topics related to creation care. The Rev. Pat Watkins, retired, spoke on May 30th regarding the biblical theology of creation care. While serving as a missionary in Nigeria with his wife, the Rev. Denise Honeycutt, Pat became deeply interested in the relation between faith and God s creation. While faith has traditionally looked at relationship with God and relationships with other people, he began to see a relationship between faith and the created order. He says: I am convinced that my faith can and must embrace a ministry that calls for the care and healing of God s creation. Pat later served in the unique capacity of Missionary for the Care of God s Creation. In that role, he guided a new, globally-focused United Methodist Ministry with God s Renewed Creation, based at the Board of Global Ministries and also closely related to the Council of Bishops. Pat s work builds on a theology that recognizes that care for creation is a fundamental aspect of Christian mission. Pat worked with UMW previously when he edited and contributed a written selection to their 2016 Issue Mission Study, Climate Justice: A Call to Hope and Action. In his retirement, Pat is active as an EarthKeeper serving in the North Carolina Annual Conference, where he has established a 25-member creation care team for the conference. The next speaker in this series is planned for the fall. Reduce! Reuse! Recycle! Rejoice! The Youth have been taking a tub full of paper to the paper recycling trailers each week things that were previously going into the trash! A large bag full of tin cans, aluminum pans, and plastic and glass bottles was collected and recycled following the Food Pantry BBQ. We are placing another recycling bin in Craven Hall near the dish drop off area to be used during church meals this will be for plastic drink bottles and aluminum cans, not paper products. Thanks for all your help keeping trash out of the recycling containers and recyclables out of the trash stream! Don t forget the Reduce! and Reuse! portions of the program, as well. There are many online tips on how to reduce your carbon footprint. Something as simple as carrying a reusable water bottle or drink cup rather than getting drinks in disposable containers can make a big difference! Every little bit helps, so start small and build over time. Then REJOICE! as you show your love to God by caring for God s creation!! For more information please contact Kim Richmond at srichmond13@triad.rr.com. Page 11 June Volume 2018, No Reynolda Road Winston Salem, NC maplesprings.org
