1 September 2017 Edition Volume 2017 Issue 9 Life Together A word from Pastor Jeff In the Book of Genesis we find two independent statements about the creation of humankind. Genesis 1 has the story of humankind simply made all at once in the image of God: 26 Then God said, Let us make humankind[c] in our image, according to our likeness;. 27 So God created humankind[e] in his image, in the image of God he created them;[f] male and female he created them. Inside this issue Women s News 2 UMCOR 3 September Events 4&5 Habitat & Preschool 6 Youth 7 Children s Ministry 8&9 Our Church Family 9 Birthdays & Anniversaries 10 Flipping to Genesis 2 we find the first man, Adam created and then Eve second. Of course, both passages teach us something. Genesis 1 teaches us that we are made in God s image. Genesis 2 informs us that it is not good for us to be alone, thus God creates Eve to be a companion for Adam. So we have two important concepts at the very beginning of our Scriptures: 1. We are image bearers of the Living God. 2. We are made for each other. So, we have here the makings for what we might call, Life Together. We are all made in the image of God and we need to be with each other. I want you to be familiar with the terminology Life Together because we are going to be creating new opportunities as well as highlighting/promoting existing ones as ways that we can experience this Life Together. Some FALL Highlights We will begin a brand new concept of learning together as we offer Table Talks immediately following the 8:45 service each Sunday. Table Talks will be a time to discuss the sermon of the day with an end toward application with an opportunity to meet and share with some other folks. In the Month of September, we will meet EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT to eat a meal together. This is a variation over our typical First Wednesday meal. This is a chance to spend some more time breaking bread together. We plan to begin a very short Wednesday worship opportunity with communion in September. Be on the lookout for this. This is in addition to our Wednesday Bible Study Groups and other Bible Studies that will kick off. Additionally DIRT (Children s Ministry) and GOOD SOIL (Middle School Youth) is kicking off its new season in September. So, why are we working so hard on this? As a program staff, we recognize that we need to be deliberate in developing and sharing our LIFE TOGETHER. So, you are invited to find yourself in a new way as we go into the fall, joining together as brothers and sisters in Christ. Peace ~ Pastor Jeff September Volume 2017 No. 9

3 UMCOR The United Methodist Committee on Relief, or UMCOR as it is more commonly called, is the relief agency of the United Methodist Church. Founded originally in 1940 in response to refugee needs arising from World War II, the organization became a permanent part of The United Methodist Church, and addresses the need for relief throughout the world. UMCOR provides humanitarian relief both domestically and internationally. Currently there is a presence in 80 different countries. This is a global response to reach the least of these in very tangible ways. Natural disasters such as earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes will always be a part of our world. There is always a need for our response. Sometimes the needs can seem overwhelming to us. But through our support of UMCOR we are assured that we are making a difference in the lives of those who need it most. Whether it is an earthquake in Haiti or a tornado in Oklahoma, UMCOR is there. We are there as boots on the ground with volunteers and workers. We are there by the distribution of health kits, hygiene kits, and flood buckets. We are there with our financial support. We are assured that 100% of financial donations to a specific need, known as an Advance Special, will go directly to that need. Unlike many other relief agencies UMCOR has historically received an A+ rating from the philanthropic association because of financial efficiency. As a church we support UMCOR through special giving Sundays, such as UMCOR Sunday, previously known as On Great Hour of Sharing. Because the administrative costs are handled through the church what we give to UMCOR goes directly to the specific need for which it is designated. for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me. Matthew 25: To learn more about UMCOR and this vital ministry that we are a part of go to Have you ever really thought about that cup of coffee you enjoy on Sunday morning? Before the 8:45 service in Craven Hall we have coffee available. We ask for a small donation to help offset cost. The coffee that we provide is Equal Exchange Fair Trade Coffee through the UMCOR Coffee Project. It s just one small way of making a statement that we support small farmers and a living wage for everyone. We can make a difference in a person s life simply by the seemingly small every day choices we make. It s more than a cup of coffee. ~ Pastor Gary Page 3

6 Habitat & Preschool The mission focus this year at VBS was Habitat for Humanity. Our elementary age kids prepared crosses to be given to new home owners as well as planters. The Wednesday after VBS there were 3 Habitat houses dedicated in Winston-Salem. Mary Taylor, Beth, Pastor Jeff and Pastor Gary attended the dedication and presented the homeowners with a cross and planter. Thanks to Mike Campbell for allowing us to partner in this way! By the time you read this newsletter we will have begun a new school year at the preschool. All our staff are rested and excited about what lies ahead. We know we will enjoy getting to know new children and families as well as reunite with the students already apart of the preschool. We want to minister and love each family God has sent us. Please pray for the staff and the children as they adjust to their new teachers. The first month of preschool we concentrate on learning the personalities of the children and their learning needs. It is so true that we are each one uniquely and wonderfully made by God. ~ Melicent Hammaker Page 6

Deaths: Helen Teague Sawyer on August 9th. Food Pantry August was another great month down in the Food Pantry. We averaged 100 people served in a week and it is possible because of the love those volunteers show to their neighbor. And if you donated food, plastic bags or anything else to the Pantry, you were feeding the least of these. This month, we are in need of breakfast cereal and canned meat like tuna, chicken and pork. If you would like to volunteer to serve on Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 8:45-11:00 or 12:45-3:00, please me at scott@maplesprings.org. Page 10
