There are so many stories that have been shared from church members and our community about their memories of the Pumpkin Patch. The Pumpkin Patch holds a special place in not only the life of our church, but our community. We look forward to the new memories we will make this season! We have at least 2 elementary schools (maybe more) coming to visit the Patch for story time, music time, craft time and of course to select a pumpkin. We will also have families joining together for Movie Night in the Patch on Friday, October 12th at 6:30pm. We will host our Pumpkin Patch Palooza on Sunday, October 21st from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. We are excited to begin our 40th season! Come on pumpkins! Mary Taylor and Scott P.S. Have you signed up to work a shift or two in the Pumpkin Patch? All funds go to support Missions of our church. Help to share the love of Christ and raise money for the church at the same time. Sign up sheets are available in the Craven Hall or online (

Sometimes the search is easy: simply type a question and the answer pops up. But sometimes our questions are complicated, and the answers are difficult to see and harder to articulate. How do we discover and examine the truths that give meaning and purpose to life? Adam Hamilton believes that some powerful answers are contained in the Apostles Creed, an early statement of foundational Christian beliefs. Questions? Contact SueEllen Thomas sthomasrn@hotmail.com. 3 Operation Christmas Child 2018 Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Project Declare His Glory among the nations! Psalm 96:3 It has been 25 years since Samaritan s Purse began distributing Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Gifts. During that time, these simple gifts have opened doors for local church partners to share the Good News of the Lord Jesus Christ with 157 million children in over 150 countries. In 2017 Maple Springs UMC members packed 113 boxes. The countries our boxes were shipped to include Paraguay, Ecuador, Ukraine, and Malawi. The Project begins this year on Sunday October 21 and the filled boxes are due back on Sunday November 11th. We hope you, your family, youth group, women s and men s groups will consider packing a box or boxes again this year. Ideas for packing boxes: Choose your favorite color and select items in that color. Choose your favorite activity, (i.e., sports, crafts, sewing, music, art, etc.) and pack a box with needed items. Please include personal care items such as bar of soap, toothbrush, water bottle, comb/brush, and washcloth. School supplies. NO TOOTHPASTE, CANDY OR LIQUIDS!!! A donation of $9.00 per box to cover processing expenses is again requested. Volunteers will be at Church entrances on Sundays October 21st, 28th and November 4th with brochures and to answer questions. The filled boxes will be dedicated at both services on November 11th. We hope everyone will consider packing a box this year in celebration of 25 years of declaring His Glory among the nations through the gift of a simple shoebox! 6 Reduce! Reuse! Recycle! Rejoice! Recycling is wonderful, but it s not the most beneficial thing we can do with our stuff! The first three R s in the above slogan are in that order for a reason. If we reduce our consumption (buy less stuff), or if we reuse the stuff we already possess, then there won t be nearly as much stuff to either throw away or recycle. Not as many resources will be used up making new stuff, either, if we buy less or reuse what we already have! While this may sound pretty logical, it isn t always obvious. It also isn t always the easiest or most convenient thing to do, although it becomes easier and more convenient after giving it a little thought and practice. Here are some suggestions for a few ways to get started reducing and reusing Decline shopping bags or carry reusable shopping bags Decline plastic straws, extra condiments, napkins, plastic-ware Carry a reusable (metal) go cup or water bottle everywhere Go to the tap for drinking water get a filtering system for better taste, if desired Switch from single-serving to larger serving or bulk food items Borrow (lend) seldom used items from (to) a friend power tools, large ladders, etc. Use washable dinnerware, silverware, bakeware Rethink disposable - many items marketed as single-use can be reused multiple times Wash and reuse plastic plates, cups, knives, forks, and spoons; aluminum baking pans Reuse plastic bags provided at stores for produce items Use cloth napkins and cloth towels instead of paper; cloth tablecloths instead of plastic Stop all that annoying junk mail there are free online services that will help with this Make two-side copies when paper copies are required go electronic whenever possible Reuse already used paper to copy on second side for informal use Purchase reading materials in electronic format rather than hard (paper copy) format Spend a little more initially on a product that is of better quality and will last longer Give and request gifts of time, personal effort (homemade items), or special memories Send electronic cards or notes rather than paper cards by mail Each Sunday, take a Sabbath from buying stuff This can be fun! It can be a challenge! It can be a joy! And we can be a blessing to others through our conscious choice to reduce, reuse, and THEN recycle!! Let s CELEBRATE Mary Taylor and Leslie Easter for their great stewardship of God s creation AND church finances by applying the reduce, reuse principle. For VBS this year, the kitchen crew switched from disposable Styrofoam plates and single-serving food items to reusable, lightweight, dishwasher safe partitioned plates and more bulk food items. A generous church member paid for the purchase of the reusable dinner ware, which is now available for reuse at all future meals involving the Children s Ministry! Less trash, less cash spent, fewer resources used up! REJOICE!! Kim Richmond Page 6

Everyone is invited, lunch is provided. It will last only an hour, and if you feel led to do so, there will be a chance for contributions at the end of the hour. If you have ever attended before, please consider coming again this year. If you have never attended, I hope you will consider coming and hearing some great information and great stories. UMAR is a non-profit organization and an agency and ministry of the Western NC Conference of the UMC and they have 24 group homes throughout western NC with three of the homes here in WS. They are an amazing organization and do some wonderful work so if you are not familiar with their story, please come if you can. Once again, everyone is invited but it is important to RSVP so they will have an accurate count so please either RSVP to UMAR.
