The article is entitled Pastors and Scholars Release Integrity and Unity Statement. This summer a meeting was held in Atlanta whereby a group of leading United Methodist pastors and theologians released a statement calling for the Council of Bishops to restore the unity of the church and the integrity of the vows United Methodist pastors have vowed to keep. This statement is a response to the controversy around same sex unions as well as the ordination of gays and lesbians. This topic as well as others are of great concern to our denominational leaders. Our own Bishop Larry Goodpaster has invited us to into conversation around these and other important topics. The Bishop is scheduling a series of Listening Sessions and also inviting us to complete an online survey, which may be found at: bishopconversations We urge you to be engaged in these conversations. As your pastors, our personal stance is to uphold Wesley s historic Articles of Religion and Confession of Faith, as well as to affirm Paragraph 161 in our Social Principles (relating to human sexuality) and Paragraph 304 (relating to ordained ministry) in the Organization and Administration Section of our Book of Discipline. Being United Methodist means acting out of both integrity and unity. Let us employ these principles not only in our daily living, but also in our congregational decision-making. We are always called to act with grace, but let us also be bold to look at all the facts and even to realize that there is always something more at stake. Sometimes we need to take a risk and be heard. More information about the group which wrote the recent statement may be found at MethodistCrossroads.org. We also encourage you to complete the Survey Monkey survey the Bishop is circulating. We encourage you to read more and to make your voice heard, and to be a dialogue partner with others in important conversations. More information can be found at listening-sessions-future. Looking Forward, Pastor Bev and Pastor Jeff Celebrating the Western Winston-Salem Missional Network This year's annual business meeting of Maple Springs UMC, called "Charge Conference, will take place amidst a group of ten churches in our Western Winston-Salem area. All church officers are expected to attend, and everyone is welcome! Holy Communion will be celebrated. 3 A Message From our New Staff Member Greetings! My name is Erin Moses, and I am so grateful and honored to have the opportunity to be your new Coordinator of Adult Spiritual Formation. I have already had the chance to meet some of you, but I hope to meet all of you face to face soon. I m interested and excited to get to know you and learn about your passions, dreams, and different ways we can serve in ministry together. I ll be a face and resource you ll come to recognize and associate with group life in the church. I believe as Christians we are created for communal life together. As one pastor has said, the church is not an organization we join; it is a family, where we belong. Thus I ll be looking to strengthen and enhance adult small groups that already exist It is hard to believe that summer is over. We have been so busy with Summer Camp, and it was a huge success. We made new friends as well as kept in touch with our old friends over the summer. The church has been busy with all its makeover projects. Craven Hall is beautiful. We, as a preschool, are so appreciative of this area and we will do our part to keep the floors beautiful. This is a great opportunity to teach the children to be respectful of God s building and, world. The children have so enjoyed watching the large trucks at work in front of the sanctuary. In the afternoon when they were leaving, they often just and create some opportunities for new ones to form. I m available to meet with you one on one in my office, over coffee, breakfast or lunch, or you can always catch me after one of the services on Sunday. I pray for the opportunity to sit down and get to know each of you on an individual basis, as well as your families. I come with my husband, Robert, and we feel excited and blessed to make Maple Springs our new church family. We live in High Point, where Robert teaches New Testament in the Department of Religion and Philosophy at High Point University. Robert is an ordained minister in the Baptist church, but he is also happy to be among Methodists. I ve been United Methodist my entire life and graduated in 2011 with my stood and watched; especially the cement mixer and fork lift. We too have been involved in some make over projects at the preschool. We have given the 2 s playground a fresh new look with red rubber mulch. Our old mulch was quite dusty and our children had to have hands, faces and legs washed each day we went outside. Now our playground will be safe and clean. We will have also had a change in our entrance door by the time you read this letter. We want the first impression as you come into the preschool to be positive, fun and exciting. We think our front door makes that impression. We also have new toys and supplies as we start the new school year. Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity School. Upon graduating, I crossed over and served as a chaplain at UNC Hospitals. I found this vocation richly rewarding and look forward to continuing some pastoral care here at Maple Springs. In the past, I have also served on staff at a large Methodist congregation in Raleigh, where I worked with youth and young adults. I have a huge heart for working with people (young and young at heart), serving in my community, and growing deeper in my Christian faith, and I feel God has called us to the right place at this point in our lives. We ll be praying for all of you, and we hope you will please pray for us, as we journey together to deepen our relationships with God, one another, and our world. A Message from Maple Springs Preschool We are a blessed preschool with all our children, staff, and supporting church behind us. We began our new school year with a prayer asking God to continue to bless us as we try to express His love to the families He has brought through our new entrance. We also prayed for God to bless the body of believers known as Maple Springs Church. May we all be giving God the glory for all the great things He has done as we move throughout this new school year. - Melicent Hammaker, Maple Springs Preschool Coordinator Volume 2014, Issue 5 I ll be looking to strengthen and enhance adult small groups that already exist and create some opportunities for new ones to form. - Erin Moses Page 3 Page 3

This will be a great way for us to get to know different people in our congregation and to spread the love of Christ in a special way at Christmas. All are welcome to participatethere is no age limit. Dinner will be served following the workshop at 5:30pm. Make sure to sign up in the bulletin or by ing Mary Taylor by Wednesday, November 12. 6 Maple Springs Life You can support the Red Bird Mission by simply clipping these labels and depositing them in the collection boxes in Craven Hall and outside the church office. Page 6 Samaritan s Purse Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Project GOOD NEWS. GREAT JOY. This is again the theme of the 2014 Samaritan s Purse Operation Christmas Child shoebox project. For 21 years, beginning in 1993, Samaritan s Purse has delivered shoebox gifts to millions of children. A Rainbow after the Storm On November 8, 2013 Typhoon Haiyan ripped through the Philippine islands. Over 6,000 people died and 4 million more saw their homes destroyed or damaged. As Christmas approached signs of hope were appearing. Samaritan s Purse responded with 2 jumbo jets loaded with emergency supplies, as well as doctors and relief workers to restore medical and water services. Then came another jumbo jet this one carrying gifts from Operation Christmas Child for 65,000 children! Most of these gifts had been packed in New York by the survivors of Hurricane Sandy! These gift boxes helped make Christmas a reality for thousands of children who thought all hope had been washed away by the floodwaters of Typhoon Haiyan. You too can be a part of this exciting project that brings hope and meaning to hurting children around the world. For Box Tops for Red Bird Mission Only 150 miles east of Winston-Salem the United Methodist Church has its largest mission in the United States. It is Red Bird Mission and Henderson settlement located in one of the ten most impoverished counties in our nation. In the past we have collected clothes, household items, and other needed supplies that assist the people living in the area. Several members of Maple Springs UMC have travelled to Kentucky to see the work that is being done. Maple Springs UMC has supported the Red Bird Mission in eastern Kentucky through the details about how to pack a shoebox, please pick up an Operation Christmas Child brochure at the entrances to the church beginning on Sunday, October 26, The filled boxes are due back at the church by Sunday, November 16, In 2013 we collected 150 boxes at Maple Springs. Let s see if we can match or exceed that number this year! 65,000 children in the Philippines received gifts from Operation Christmas Child following the November 8 typhoon that destroyed their homes. collection of Box Tops education coupons and Campbell s Labels for Education. Thousands of United Methodist churches participate in this endeavor which only takes a moment of your time. These labels enable the largest UM mission in the United States to carry on their work in their school, clinic, children s and youth activities, help to the elderly and assistance to babies. The mission is dependent on these labels for transportation vans, computers for school and office, other school supplies. Without this collection of coupons sent from many churches the work there would be greatly reduced. You can become a part of this mission by clipping these labels and depositing them in the collection boxes in Craven Hall (near the desk) and in the hall outside the church office. As you do this, say a prayer for the missionaries in the Red Bird Mission and the people who need our help. If you wish to learn more about the work of our church in eastern Kentucky there are members who would be happy to share with your Sunday School class or any group more information about this mission.
