I repent for all the times I pushed the saints of the church to their absolute limits! I repent of having pushed myself to that very same precipice! I repent for not hearing Jesus when he clearly said, Come unto me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart. And you will find rest for your souls. (Matthew 11:28-29) Having refused for 26 years the wisdom of the Master of Rest and the Creator of 6-day work weeks, I finally preach the Gospel of REST! From time to time, pastors exhaust church members with the high calling to get more done for the Kingdom. Church members often do the same to one another. And frankly (honestly), church members do it to pastors, too. The result is burnout. I found myself exhausted this spring, after almost three years of renovation conversations, actual renovations, deep change, personnel transitions, team building, supervision, and other non-stop weekly and seasonal demands. I was deeply tired, crispy fried, done! I kept telling myself that this is just a season things will calm down. But yet they never did. It was always the next drama, another wrinkle, a new project. I discovered an article in Christianity Today that I finally believed, which stated that rest is the only solution. So lately, I have learned to rest. This is BIG for me! We first-child, Dean s List, boss types aren t so good at it. I have enjoyed some great Continuing Education (a requirement, by the way, not a vacation), some restorative sightseeing (yes, history can actually trigger deep reflection), and some decent plain-old down time. I even ventured to the beach for a long weekend, where Tropical Storm Ana taught me that you can enjoy watching Paddington three times in one weekend and read an entire book on the sinking of the Lusitania. (OK, so I m still a little works-righteous about my rest.). By the way, I really recommend Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania by Erik Larson. I have a few pointers for those of you who might also need some rest for your souls: 1. Ditch the electronics. Social media is not relaxing. 2. Blame it on your health. If you won t rest for your soul, at least rest for your body. It s probably tired, too. 3. Are you choosing burnout? Do you want Saint beside your name? 4. God might be waiting for a moment to speak. True story. (Enough said.) Page 2 Get some rest this summer. It may help you to say yes to the next right things in your life. Most of all, you probably need it. Love you. Mean it.

3 A Word from the Cyre Family Dear Maple Springs family, At Annual Conference in just a few short weeks, Ashley s appointment as pastor of Hopewell UMC in Trinity, NC will be confirmed. Our last official Sunday at Maple Springs will be June 14th, and we plan to move to Trinity during the week of July 1st. Katie will continue to commute back to Winston-Salem for work, but in every other way, this is a life-changing move! It is a bittersweet time for us as we prepare to depart the community and fellowship that we have shared with you over the past 13 years. We have found such love, support, friendship, and solace in your embrace. You have trained us up in many ways as we found our places in the world! Ashley s ministry began here with the Maple Springs youth group young men and women we will forever count as some of our own. You adopted Eli directly into your own families and hearts, and you have taught him to love the church. Right on the heels of his birth, you gave tremendous support as Ashley received a diagnosis of leukemia and received treatment over the course of the next year. We will never forget that. You supported his decision to return to Divinity School, and created space for him to come back full circle in support of our Food Pantry. Your love, guidance, and faith have helped to shape us into who we are as we move into life with the Hopewell UMC community. Wesley Corner We are thrilled and hopeful for all that lies ahead for Maple Springs ministries, and are grateful for this time and these relationships shared with you. Thank you for journeying with us, and for the sweetness with which you are sending us forward into the world! Blessings, Ashley, Katie, & Eli Cyre The Christian is never justified in sinning, because the indwelling Holy Spirit within gives the Christian the power to resist sin. The Holy Spirit has delivered us from the bondage of sin and its power over us. The Holy Spirit purifies us and cleanses us of all unrighteousness. The Holy Spirit is perfecting us in holiness as we fear God. (The Holy Spirit and Power by John Wesley, p. 183.) Today s ponderable: We are never as tall as when we kneel. Ministry Developments Congratulations to Lisa Huffman, who was recently certified as a candidate for ministry in the United Methodist Church! Lisa will begin Duke Divinity School this August as a fellow in the Thriving Rural Communities Initiative. Your church is proud of you and praying for you, Lisa! Robert Moses, husband of Erin and Professor of Religion at High Point University, will be our guest preacher at both services on Sunday, June 21. Rev. Bob Huffman, retired United Methodist elder and popular Sunday School teacher here at Maple Springs, will preach and lead the church in Holy Communion at both services on Sunday, July 5. Prayers for Pastor Jeff as he travels to England in July as a participant in the Royce and Jane Reynolds LEAD Academy. Jeff will visit some sites made famous by the ministries of John and Charles Wesley. Volume 2015, Issue 3 Lisa Huffman (pictured left with her sister, Kathryn) was recently certified as a candidate for ministry in the United Methodist Church! Page 3 Page 3

ADULT SUMMER BOOK STUDY What better way to usher in summer than joining a book club? I invite you together with your small group or adult Sunday school class to join in a summer reading and book study of Transforming Evangelism: The Wesleyan Way of Sharing Faith by Henry H. Knight III and F. Douglas Powe, Jr. This book takes a somewhat altered approach to evangelism in that it sees evangelism as a starting point, instead of an end in itself. Knight and Powe argue through Wesleyan theology that evangelism is a lifetransforming gift, which starts with an invitation through the gift of God s grace and continues through nurturing and loving relationships in a community of faith. In other words, evangelism is incomplete without discipleship and relationship. If your class or small group is interested in completing the study, or if you have questions, please contact Erin (erin@maplesprings.org). I hope you will give it serious and prayerful consideration, as I believe it makes a huge contribution to the way we do and think of evangelism through the lens of Wesleyan belief and practice. Happy reading! Volume 2015, Issue 3 Join the Maple Springers for our monthly luncheon featuring Kim Sheeks, the Hat Woman, and be prepared to laugh a lot! - Candice Back Page 5 Page 5

6 Maple Springs Life Thanks also to all the volunteers who made the Dirt possible during ! - Mary Taylor Setliff Page 6 Safe Sanctuaries Update Here are a few reminders of our policies. Escort Children in the Building: Please escort children 5th grade and younger to and from Sunday School and make sure the teacher is ready to receive them when they arrive. We want to ensure an adult-to-adult hand-off when children are entering and exiting their classes. Children should not be wandering around the building alone at any time. If your child needs to leave the church service (even for a trip around the corner to the bathroom), please go with them. Update Volunteer Covenant Statements: Volunteer Covenant Statements must be updated every 2 years. If you volunteer in our children's or youth ministries, but have not updated your form, please do so and turn it into Mary Taylor. As a part of this process, you will also complete a form that will allow us to conduct a criminal background check. You will also need to attend a Safe Sanctuaries training session within six months of updating your form. Watch the newsletter and e-news for dates and times of upcoming sessions. Jessica's Law Procedures: Our policy addresses the limited situations in which a registered sex offender can lawfully be on church property. If you are aware of a registered sex offender who is participating in meetings or other activities on church premises, please notify the pastors so that we can ensure compliance with our Safe Sanctuaries procedures. Six-Month Rule: The DIRT Children s Ministry Update We welcome parents and other family members to attend children and youth events and to help out under the supervision of another volunteer or church staff member. However, volunteers must regularly attend Maple Springs for a minimum of six months before they can serve as the lead adult when working with children or youth. Thanks for helping us be a Safe Sanctuary. Thanks to all of the kids who participated in DIRT this past year on Wednesday evenings. Mary Taylor and Ms. Beth had so much fun spending the year with you and thought it was a wonderful first year! We loved singing with you, playing chimes, serving others and building a strong community. Mark your calendars for our fall season start date - we will kick off the fun on Wednesday, October 7. Thanks also to all the volunteers who made Dirt possible during ! Children s Summer Sunday School We are beginning to schedule our teachers for Summer Sunday school. Summer classes begin Sunday, June 7 and continue through the end of August. Currently, teaching opportunities are still available for: 3's and 4's Preschool class (continuing with current curriculum) K/1 and 2nd/3rd (switching to Grow, Proclaim, Serve) 4th and 5th (Summer of Service) If you are willing to help teach in the Preschool class, please contact Marci Bruno (marcibrunophotography@ gmail.com). Over the past months we have been discussing John Wesley s three simple rules: First, Do No Harm; Second, Do Good; Third, Attend all of the Ordinances of God, or as Bishop Job has paraphrased it: Stay in Love with God. It has been a gift to see Annika, Caleb, Jane, and Katie grow deeper in their love of Jesus. I m amazed at how God is teaching us all the time, giving us opportunity to grow deeper. We have an invitation to be life-long learners. We have an invitation to be a people who continue our long obedience in the same direction and to flee from the trap that we know enough or that we have arrived. A huge thank you to Julie Cunningham and Bev Coppley in their partnership and investment in the lives of these confirmands, as well as to the confirmation class mentors; Katie Cyre, Kathryn Huffman, Cathy Plaster, and Drew Setliff. Thank you for your prayers for these youth and their families during this important season, as well as your commitment and partnership in the Gospel to them. PsalmSupper Every Monday night from 6:00pm-7:30pm, our high school youth gather for dinner and a psalm. We have been studying one psalm each week, with the goal of going through the entire book of Psalms. A psalm is presented each week with a psalm drawing, a response that is presented by one of the youth. We just finished Psalm 48 this past week. Here is the psalm response for Psalm 48 that one of the youth put together, as well as a picture of the PsalmSupper crew mid-meeting. a people who continue to grow deeper in love with you every day.
