If you work for someone or for yourself, you have in some form of a description of what you do. Even pastors have job descriptions, which are set by the United Methodist Book of Discipline. They are summed up in one sentence We are ordained as ministers to the ministry of WORD, SACRAMENT, and ORDER. What does this mean? Your Pastors are appointed by the Annual Conference to teach and proclaim the WORD through the Scriptures. We are to guide you to a life in the scriptures and ultimately to a relationship with the One revealed in them. Secondly, we are appointed to administer the SACRAMENTS and monitor the sacramental life of the Church. Yes, this is Holy Communion and Baptism. But, it is more than ceremonial acts. We are ordained to lead you into a life where the sacrifice of Christ is visible in your life and where the vows of baptism are lived out. When you are baptized, you become part of something bigger than you. While all of our opinions and ideas are part of life together ultimately, we live according to the way that Christ calls us. When baptized, we die. Yes, that s correct. But, when we die in the waters of baptism, Christ is born in us. Last, but not least of all, your Pastors are ordained to the ministry of ORDER, which means, ordering the life of the Church. We are called to guide the way we work together and to help us structure ourselves for the accomplishment of our mission. OUR MISSION gives us insight into the job description of all members of Maple Springs. The mission is critical. If we are doing anything that interferes with the mission, then we stop doing it. Nothing can be permitted to stop the mission of Christ in the world. YES, it does matter that much! Our mission here is to be ROOTED in Christ how are your roots looking? When we are ROOTED, then we accomplish the second part of our mission, which is to GROW in Christ. How is your growth? If you wonder, then check your rootedness again. Finally, our Mission is to BEAR FRUIT for Christ. How much ministry with the poor have you been involved in? How many strangers have you blessed in the past week? Do you love your community in tangible ways? How many people have you invited to church in 2015? Your pastors are here to support you in what you do for the cause of Christ! Blessings, Pastor Jeff Page 2 Oct/Nov Volume 2015, No Reynolda Road Winston Salem, NC maplesprings.org
3 2015 Operation Christmas Child Volume 2015, Issue 5 THE GREATEST JOURNEY IT S JUST THE BEGINNING In a few weeks, the 2015 Operation Christmas Child will begin. In 2014, 10.4 MILLION boys and girls in 118 countries received a shoebox. Every shoebox gift you pack represents an opportunity to share the gospel through The Greatest Journey discipleship program developed for children who receive shoeboxes through Operation Christmas Child. Corey and Katie Garrett, who are serving in Senegal, submitted the following article following the distribution of boxes in their church: The boxes you pack with love and given from hearts full of generosity, compassion and a desire to share God s love are so appreciated. Each child is excited and blessed to receive a gift; this for most is so unexpected and unusual. Most of these children do not get presents on Christmas or birthdays. And most are only rarely given new things or presents at all. So to receive a box of gifts is a treat! This past Sunday we had the fun of giving each child at church a shoebox along with the booklet, The Greatest Journey. This booklet is written in the form of a comic book and it tells the story of some children learning about the greatest gift of all Jesus! The booklets are well done and thoughtfully appropriate for our context and super cool. The Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Project will begin at Maple Springs on Sunday, October 25. Brochures will be available at all entrances and volunteers will be on hand to answer any questions. All the information you need to pack a box is in the brochure----please READ THEM CAREFULLY!!! The shipping labels are also on the back of the brochures. A donation of $7 per box is requested and there is an envelope with the brochure for the donation. The filled boxes are due back Sunday November 15! In 2014, Maple Springs collected 191 boxes. Let s set 200 boxes as our goal for Thanks for your continuing support of this project. Wesley Corner Marty Carlisle and Betty Holley, Project Coordinators For indeed, he prays without ceasing; his heart is lifted to God at all times and in all places. Whether he lie down, or rises up, God is in his thoughts A Plain Account of Christian Perfection, John Wesley, p In 2014, Maple Springs collected 191 boxes. Let s set 200 boxes as our goal for 2015! Do you have an artistic child? Let them use their creativity to help with our Advent bulletins! We are asking our kids to submit drawings for the covers of our Advent bulletins. Drawings can be in color and need to be submitted to Mary Taylor by Wednesday, November 18. The preaching series for Advent is Shining Star. Kids are asked to consider this theme as they work on their drawings. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Taylor (marytaylor@maplesprings.org) Today s ponderable: The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was, If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me? But---the good Samaritan reversed the question: If I don t stop to help this man, what will happen to him? -Martin Luther King Jr. Page 3 Oct/Nov Volume 2015, No Reynolda Road Winston Salem, NC maplesprings.org Page 3
