1 SPECIAL THANKS! Thanks to Kayla Foster for choreographing a liturgical dance for some of our elementary kids. The group took part in the 8:45am worship service on April 17. We hope to have more opportunities like this in the coming months. Thanks to Claire Casey, Katie Casey, Anna Easter, Laheri Foster and Madeline Head for taking part. Inside this issue: Blessings Day Recap 2 Food Pantry Update 3 Chinese Update 3 Our Church Family 4 Announcements/ Events 5 Summer Camps 6 Youth Ministry Update 7 Children s Ministry Update 8 Adult Summer Reading 9 VBS 10 May Edition Volume 2016, Issue 4 Update from Staff Parish Relations Committee As was shared immediately after our services on Sunday, April 24th, we have been notified by the District Superintendent and the Bishop that we will have a change in our pastoral staff effective July 1. With excitement for her, but sadness for us, Pastor Bev has been appointed to Ardmore UMC here in Winston-Salem. This is a wonderful opportunity for her ministry as she will serve as their Senior Pastor. The DS and Bishop confirmed that Pastor Jeff will continue with us here at Maple Springs as our Senior Pastor. We are blessed to have him and his gifts as he will help us with our mission to bring others to Christ. Rev. Bev Coppley We are happy to announce that the DS and Bishop have also made an appointment to have Pastor Gary Mahathey serve as an Associate Pastor here at Maple Springs. Gary comes to us from the New Home/Shady Grove charge in East Bend where he has been the pastor for two churches for the past 4 years. The SPRC met with Gary and all were impressed with his ministry gifts and what he can bring to Maple Springs. Gary and his wife will move back to their home in Winston-Salem where they lived for many years. Gary s prior appointment was at Mt. Tabor UMC where he began his career in ministry after a career in sales with Graybar Electric Co. Look for upcoming communications about a time of celebration to honor Bev. SPRC will also plan an opportunity for you all to get a chance to meet Gary after he begins his appointment with us. Changes of our pastoral staff can be a time of anticipation for our church and we need to be open to God s provision of what is needed to grow his kingdom. If you have any questions, please reach out to Jeff or Bev or any member of the Staff Parish Relations Committee. In a few hours, this enthusiastic group managed to: Create 30 cheerful sock cupcakes (to warm cold feet) for distribution to church members through various visitation programs. See Erin to deliver one. Assembled 11 beautiful double-sided fleece lap blankets for local Hospice patients. The patients and caregivers love them and greet us with open arms at delivery time each year. Special thanks to those who took extras home to complete! Put together 12 Birthday Party Bags. Each colorful bag held party supplies for one child s birthday party plates, cups, napkins, balloons, candles, cake mix, and frosting. These bags are a big hit at the Battered Women s Shelter, a crisis setting where children s birthdays are often overlooked. Wrote messages on beautiful handmade inspirational cards (thank you, Nancy Karriker!) to Methodist missionaries. We have already received notes from several of the recipients expressing their joy and appreciation at being so lovingly remembered for their service. Assembled 105 Encouragement treat bags for Old Town School teachers and staff. Filled the Preschool kitchen counters with Appreciation Snacks for our beloved Preschool staff. MSUMC is Looking for a Ministry Leader! We are looking for a leader for our Monthly Maple Springers Senior Adult Ministry. A Team of workers is in place and this ministry is well organized. You will be trained to lead! Page 2 Contact Erin Moses at erin@maplesprings.org.

3 10 Things You Can Do to Feed the Need Volume 2016, Issue 4 Thank you for your support of our Food Pantry Flower Garden Food Drive! Stay tuned to hear the results of this church-wide effort. Top 10 things you can do to Feed the Need in our community: 10) Learn more about food insecurity. 9) Donate a $1.00 can opener from the Dollar Tree. 8) If you garden or farm, donate your surplus harvest. 7) Start a food drive at your office, school or in your neighborhood. 6) Ask for food donations in lieu of gifts at your next birthday celebration. 5) Consider healthy choices when choosing foods to donate. 4) Donate paper towels, toilet paper and toiletry items. 3) Make a small financial gift - every $1 gift secures 5 pounds of food. 2) Volunteer your time: Ask your employer if they provide community service days. 1) Pray that we will always be a source of love and hope in our community. To learn more, please contact Allison Kelly, Food Pantry Coordinator at allison@maplesprings.org. Chinese Ministry Update If you ask me what changes I have experienced after I became a Christian, to be honest, I don t see many in me. I still sin and make mistakes, and make up excuses for them. Other people may have the wisdom to give better answers to that question. I have but this to say for now: when I trust God, who is mighty and just, I am set free from my own fears. - Tianchen W. (baptized on ) More information will be available soon about a Volunteer Meeting for current and prospective food pantry volunteers.. - Allison Kelly, Food Pantry Coordinator Every Saturday night, Craven Hall and Cokesbury Room are alive with college students from Winston Salem area. They play basketball, they have dinner together, they learn to sing Christian hymns and songs, and they study the Gospel of Luke together with many questions. These are young students from China getting their undergraduate/graduate education here, who, most likely, did not have much intersection with Christianity back home. Here in the mission field at Maple Springs, they are welcome to be a part of some or all of the evening with other students. Tianchen has been coming off and on for the past 3 years and made the decision last year to accept Christ as her Savior. She was baptized here at church on Easter. Page 3 Page 3

7 Youth Ministry Updates by Joe Hout CONFIRMATION 2016 Our 8 Confirmands continue their journey through Confirmation. We had the opportunity to participate in a Winston-Salem InterFaith event. We attended a Mosque, a Moravian church, and a Catholic church. It was very educational and a good opportunity to build bridges and friendships with those in our community. We were even on the local news! We also had the opportunity to go on our Confirmation Retreat at Lake Junaluska, where we gathered with other Confirmation classes from all around. They made their confirmation stoles at this weekend (Make sure you check them out on Confirmation Sunday!). Pray for these 8 youth who are building a foundation on Christ, learning more and more what it means to be a member of the body. PSALMSUPPER: 6:00pm-7:30pm At Allen's Dairy Treats Our High School youth have been studying the book of Psalms over the past two years. Looking at a psalm each week, working their way through the book, they have just done Psalm 72, finishing Book II! Proud of our youth and their commitment to God's Word and going deeper. #GoodSoil: 4:15pm Our Middle School midweek small group plays ukulele! They continue to study the Gospel Parables, digging deep into God's Word. Second Sunday: Monthly All Youth Meeting A BIG thank you to our youth for serving at the Easter Eggstravaganza by running games! After helping, they had their own Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt. Lots of great time together in community! 8 Maple Springs Life Thanks for helping us be a Safe Sanctuary. - Maple Springs Safe Sanctuary Committee Page 8 Safe Sanctuaries Update Here are a few reminders of our policies: Escort Children in the Building: Please escort children 5th grade and younger to and from Sunday School and make sure the teacher is ready to receive them when they arrive. We want to ensure an adult-to-adult hand-off when children are entering and exiting their classes. Children should not be wandering around the building alone at any time. If your child needs to leave the church service (even for a trip around the corner to the bathroom), please go with them. Update Volunteer Covenant Statements: Volunteer Covenant Statements must be updated every 2 years. If you volunteer in our children's or youth ministries, but have not updated your form, please do so and turn it into Mary Taylor. As a part of this process, you will also complete a form that will allow us to conduct a criminal background check. You will also need to attend a Safe Sanctuaries training session within six months of updating your form. Watch the newsletter and e-news for dates and times of upcoming sessions. Jessica's Law Procedures: Our policy addresses the limited situations in which a registered sex offender can lawfully be on church property. If you are aware of a registered sex offender who is participating in meetings or other activities on church premises, please notify the pastors so that we can ensure compliance with our Safe Sanctuaries procedures. Six-Month Rule: We welcome parents and other family members to attend children and youth events and to help out under the supervision of another volunteer or church staff member. However, volunteers must regularly attend Maple Springs for a minimum of six months before they can serve as the lead adult when working with children or youth. Childrens Ministry Updates by Mary Taylor Setliff ON THE MOVE: ACTION & SERVICE CAMP August All current 3rd, 4th and 5th graders are invited to take part in our first On the Move: Action and Service Camp. We will meet each day from 9am to 4pm. The cost for the camp is $60. Each day we will spend a part of the day serving others and the other part having fun doing some kind of action. If you have questions, please contact Mary Taylor Setliff at marytaylor@maplesprings.org. The deadline to register is June 15. Club 45 Sunday, May 15 4:00pm - 6:00pm Craven Hall Club 45 will meet for their final gathering of the school year. Come and celebrate our last meeting together! MAD4X: Our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders spent the afternoon of Sunday, April 17 with the Yadkin Valley District of the UMC at Bunker Hill UMC in Kernersville. We had a fun afternoon of games, inflatables, food and missions. We learned about the mission opportunities at Rupert Bell Park and put together summer bags for kids who attend church there. We hope to get involved there soon!

9 Youth Ministry Updates (continued) TAKING DINNER TO WESLEY AT WAKE Maple Springs was able to support the ministry of the Wesley Foundation at Wake Forest University by taking them dinner. 50 students enjoyed some good Chicken... It's Bo Time! It was great to visit and connect with them. Volume 2016, Issue 4 Join the church in our study of our very own Dr. Robert Moses book, Practices of Power. - Erin Moses, Adult Adult Summer Reading/Fall Study by Erin Moses The apostle Paul takes for granted a universe animated by powerful spiritual forces, which are sometimes hostile to believers. These forces are often termed "principalities and powers." What are some of the practices Paul advocated for followers of Jesus in light of these "powers?" How can this important teaching of the New Testament be relevant for us in our day? If you are interested in this topic, then I invite you to join in on an engaging summer read. We are adopting our very own Dr. Robert Moses' book as our summer read: Practices of Power: Revisiting the Principalities and Powers in the Pauline Letters. The summer reading will culminate in a month-long study of Paul s conception of the principalities and powers this coming fall led by Dr. Moses. If you would like a copy of the book to be reading over the summer, you may purchase a copy from Amazon or Barnes & Noble (Robert will autograph for free!). If interested in attending the study or you have any questions, please contact Erin Moses at erin@maplesprings.org.
